Can girl servers wear the cope? Can anyone point me to any document on this? We have girls wearing the cassock and at times the cope.

No servers of the altar should wear the Cope, that is solely a Clerical Vestment for use at all solemn celebrations apart from the Liturgy (Mass or Solemn Liturgy of Word and Communion), if you have Servers wearing the Cope, you should report it directly to your Bishop (talk to your pastor first and have him explain though) as this is a grave abuse of the Clerical Vestments.

Might you mean a surplice, the white sleeved garment that goes over the cassock?

Nope, I mean a cope. The garment the priest wears during exposition.

If your sure it was a Cope like that, then you need to speak to your Priest and your Bishop this is only proper vestments, for an Ordained member of the Clergy of atleast the Priesthood (if i remember correctly it is not proper for a Deacon to wear a Cope).

I believe that is what it was! So the girl was in the Vimpa with a cassock. It all just seems confusing! It was during the Easter Vigil with the Bishop present.Is there a Bishop involved? The GIRM is succinct and clear…it is a vestment for the priest…no one else…see #341 below. Hope this is on-target for your question…and a “source” for the answer.

Ohh. Probably a vimpa. Did they hold the Bishop’s mitre and/or Crosier (hat and staff)? If yes, definitely a vimpa.

It was definitely a vimpa. It just didn’t seem right to me and my husband, who was joining the Church, had asked me about it. It is already confusing for him to see the girls in the cassock and then this really threw him for a loop. Quite honestly it was a bit confusing for me also. The kids and I have been going over the vestments and their uses and I racked my brain about this one. I have so very much to learn and I’m a cradle Catholic. If I only had more time!
I really do with we would have the boys serve in the cassocks. I don’t allow my girls to serve and that alone has been a battle. Then when we went from albs to cassocks and the girls were serving I had a whole new battle. My son loves the cassock, especially when he understood it was a manly thing. It popped his little bubble to see a girl in it.

Girls should not be in cassocks. They are indeed a “manly” thing. They are clerical clothing.It is already confusing for him to see the girls in the cassock and then this really threw him for a loop.

Usually girl alter servers wear an alb – the white robe with a belt. Boy servers wear a cassock and surplice --the short white ‘top’ that goes over the cassock. I have never seen a girl server wearing a cassock.
I would ask the pastor about what the servers should be wearing. Not to accuse, but to find out why the girls have begun to wear cassocks. If the parish doesn’t own albs (which seems unlikely), maybe offer to help organize a fundraiser for them.
