:confused:Hello.
I have a problem. I’m a girl and I find gay guys and the thought of gay guys being together attractive and sexually exciting. I go to high school, and being gay is the in thing now. I watched the musical Rent (which was about a group of friends living together in New York City; four of them, two boys and two girls, were gay and one of the guys was a drag queen) and thought it was entertaining and great. In books I read, some girls have a “gay best friend.” I’ve thought this would be fun also. I know this is a problem, but it’s hard for me to see what’s so wrong about it. It doesn’t sound so bad. Gay guys won’t hurt you the way straight guys might, and they can be pretty funny. I have a gay friend, and he’s fun to talk to about what guys are cute and that sort of thing. I prefer talking to him than to my girl friends because with girls, there’s more competition for guys and they’ll pick on you if they don’t like the same (straight) guys as you. I feel kind of conflicted, because a part of me doesn’t see why I should stop liking this stuff because I don’t see how it’s hurting anyone–in fact, in a way it’s keeping me safe from bad straight guys and nasty girls. Can someone please help me? and are there any support groups for Catholic girls with my knid of problem?
Thank you!

There is nothing with being gay, and there is certainly nothing wrong with you liking gay guys. The sin comes in only with sex!

and lustful desires. And silence (if you know someone is doing something sinful and remain silent). And counsel (if you advise someone to do something sinful).

But, no. There is nothing wrong with having gay friends. Supporting sin, however, is wrong.

You’re a high school student who needs to be kept safe from bad straight guys and nasty girls, so you are seeking out the company of gay guys? You prefer talking to a gay guy over talking to your girlfriends because with girls, there’s more competition for guys and they’ll pick on you if they don’t like the same straight guys as you like? You said gay guys won’t hurt you the way straight guys might, so you like the idea of having a gay guy as a friend? But, you also find the idea of two guys being together attractive?

I don’t know what to say about any of that. Maybe you should ask your husband his opinion? Or, maybe you should ask your kids their opinions?
I really appreciate the in put. **My husband **does use the Word Among Us. But I need at least the Morning and Evening Prayers. Please keep your comments coming; they are very insightful and helpful:)
:)Hello, I didn’t describe my prayer exhaustion situation very well. I had been praying the LOTH Morning, 3 Daily Offices, Evening and Night prayer. I added OOR at lent and kept with it during our Glorious Easter as well. Now, I’ve “hit the wall” so to speak. I thought of other things, like the Magnificat magazine but I feel very sad to not be praying the Prayer of the Church - it ment alot to me, even as I prayed alone I knew I was part of something larger. I can’t read all those psalms - its taking too much of my time **as a wife and mother **it’s just not joyous more of an endurance contest now. I also need some spice - ideas for meditation maybe. I really don’t know what’s out there - hence the question. Thank you for taking time to offer ideas!🙂

 the plot thickens . . .

I like boys who like girls who like boys, but I’m not still in high school. Does that count? Or do I lack ‘in thing hipness?’

Good detective work SwizzleStick. 👍 Now we’ll wait for the reply from the OP.🍿

Either that or the OP is going to be hoping her mom won’t find out she co-opted her mom’s screen-name. But yes, something does not add up here.

At any rate, it is OK to have gay friends. It is not too smart to put anyone down or put anyone on a pedestal based on their sexual orientation, let alone think you can predict a teen’s future behavior as a friend based on that. As with anything else in life–especially a teen’s social life!!–it is not that simple.

Being bi-curious was trendy when I was in high school also. I had two friends that “experimented” together. One lives a homosexual lifestyle and the other is a happily married Mormon. The married guy really wanted to be different in every way possible from his pink hair to the shoes he wore. If it’s a trend, I am almost certain that it will die like other crazes. We can only hope that it goes the way of disco and they come to regret the their follies like my parents regret their disco balls and roller skates!

Except that disco is not a mortal sin. Let’s not equate the two.

“But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” – Mat 18:6

True enough. We’ll see what unfolds, I guess.

I cannot express completely how sad and disappointed I am that so few people took my daughters terrible pain and ask for help seriously. I suggested this site because I thought it would provide safe and Catholic help. My daughter is tormented by sexual urges about thinking of 2 men being phsical together. It’s not funny. I am trying to teach her that sitting around talking about cute guys, with guys who like guys also, it supportig the sin. I continue to pray someone will help, I’ve run out of ideas. I know there’s COURAGE but she isn’t lesbian in orientation. She wants to watch 2 guys kiss, etc. I pray somone will understand and thow us a lifeline, right now I just regret suggesting this site.

Maybe you and your daughter should have made it clearer that you weren’t one another.

Your pastor would be a much better place to seek guidance for a Catholic teen than to seek opinions from strangers on the internet, even on this site. Courage and EnCourage would also be much better sources. Anonymous posters are not a good source of help.

Anyone can post here, not just Catholics who follow the teachings of the Church. While many posters are Catholic and do follow the teachings of the Church, many do not, so a teen is exposed to contradictory opinions here just as in the real world.

I apologize for the misunderstanding, but two people posting under the same name with a very similar posting style will cause misunderstanding and confusion.

Ma’am. Quite a bit of the lack of understanding comes from the fact that we were given no mention that it was your daughter. A lack of communication does little to help one’s problems, but can severely hinder the solution, as it has here. I apologize for whatever part I have had in causing your regret.

Now, on to the issue. Perchance your daughter needs to invest in prayer. Serious prayer. I am not trying to dismiss your daughter’s case, but do this out of personal experience. Prayer sets right the confusion of the soul, but only if one is serious. Your daughter’s desires are born, ultimately, from the culture we live in. There is a cultural cause to your daughter’s desires, and, without knowing your daughter, I cannot say what it is. I can say, that, unless you and your daughter are truly willing to fight this at any cost by taking whatever has caused this out of her life, then prayer is her only hope.

I can perhaps find a few prayers for your daughter’s use if you would like. I have a few prayer books and know of many excellent sites.

I have had many problems, some of them similar (in nature, not kind) to your daughter, and have either overcome them or are overcoming them through prayer. I have little faith in counseling, personally.

Thank you so much! This is the best information I’ve recieved all day. Please tell us about the books and prayers you mentioned. I (the daughter) am very grateful to you for your help.
Thanks!
thanks again - mom

halx–

If your daughter was using an account that wasn’t hers but had your permission, we needed to know that up front, so that it didn’t appear that either you were a troll who waited until your 15th post to start trolling, or that a troll had gotten a hold of your account. This is the internet; clever people post disingenuous things all the time. If an account user claims in one thread to be a mother with kids, but in another threads claims to be a highschooler with a slightly odd-sounding question, that is going to send up red flags in any internet-savvy person if there’s no explanation.

Anyway, to your daughter:

I’m glad you are evaluating your behavior honestly and trying hard to do the right thing. There are a few aspects of your post that I, just as a young and male outsider, would like to speak to.

Gay men are, of course, our fellow children of God, and they deserve all of the love, support, and welcome we can give them. Building friendships even with those who engage in sins we know to be serious is praiseworthy as long as those friendships do not damage your faith. Keep your gay friends; how could such people be evangelized if they are not authentically befriended and loved first?

There are other things about your situation that concern me, though. First, this: “I’m a girl and I find gay guys and the thought of gay guys being together attractive and sexually exciting.” That impulse is understandable; most men, in their fallen sinful state, find the idea of two women together sexually exciting. But God gave us sexuality for the imaging of his divine love in the Sacrament of marriage; fantasizing about any kind of sexual images unless you’re with your spouse in the bedroom is a sin. Lust is a corruption of God’s very high intentions for human sexuality; becoming sexually excited thinking about gay men being together is altogether wrong if Christianity is true. It could also have the effect of normalizing the idea of gay sex in your mind, which would also be bad; 2000 years of Christian Tradition speak to the fact that human sexuality is built spiritually on the complementarity between the sexes, and that same-sex romantic relationships are wrong.

Second, this passage: “Gay guys won’t hurt you the way straight guys might, and they can be pretty funny. I have a gay friend, and he’s fun to talk to about what guys are cute and that sort of thing. I prefer talking to him than to my girl friends because with girls, there’s more competition for guys and they’ll pick on you if they don’t like the same (straight) guys as you. I feel kind of conflicted, because a part of me doesn’t see why I should stop liking this stuff because I don’t see how it’s hurting anyone–in fact, in a way it’s keeping me safe from bad straight guys and nasty girls.”

Two things concern me about this passage. First, as your mother said, taking about gay men about what guys are sexually attractive is doubly dangerous: first, because either you or your friend may be lusting (and leading one another into lust), and second, because it encourages your friend to act on his same-sex attractions, if only in his thoughts. You should genuinely, authentically be friends with these men (if your faith can handle it), but you can’t ever compromise the truth that homosexuality is spiritually disordered and that acting on it is wrong. It is a very hard truth to live by, but that’s all the more reason why you cannot compromise it to your friends and must instead gently try and lead them to see that they must live by it.

Second, your descriptions of your straight friends are downright terrifying. The girls you know “pick on you if they don’t like the same (straight) guys as you”? You’re convinced that the straight guys you know will hurt you? Where on earth did you find such mean-spirited people? I think you need to re-think whether or not you’re being fair to your straight friends, and if so, I think you need to get the heck away from them! Do not put up with fellow girls who bully you or straight guys who will hurt you! I assure you, there are better girls and straight men out there than that.

Love your gay friends as a good friend should. But never fail to witness to the truth with them; as their friend, you owe them that.
