Pax Christi!

Yup, that’s what we sang this morning after Mass. We always do. On Memorial Day we sing The Battle Hymn of the Republic. (After the recessional hymn.)

Does your parish sing anything patriotic on patriotic holidays?

God bless!

I went to the Saturday Vigil Mass yesterday and our closing song was “America the Beautiful”.

India’s Independence Day falls on the feast of the Assumption - August 15th.

The Mass is generally the regular Assumption Mass, but they hoist the national flag at most parishes, and sing one or two songs with lyrics modified to refer to the event. 🙂

When I was Music Director yes.
Our current parish will not allow such though 😦

Correct me if I’m wrong but, I don’t think it’s liturgically right to sing that in the Mass.

In the Mass it would be liturgically wrong. Once Mass is over (the recessional) then not liturgically wrong. In this case I believe we are talking about the latter.

Oh, I didn’t see the “after” part.

As our recessional, we sang 2 verses of America the Beautiful, followed by God Bless America. Everyone was singing! It gave me chills.

Clare, why aren’t you allowed to sing God Bless America? That’s ridiculous.

The former Pastor was anti-military, anti=government. 😦
So…the musicians never change what they sing. We sing the same songs every year for each Sunday. 1st Sunday in ordinary time, every year, same thing.
They just keep the old programs form the previous director. Drives me nuts.

Your parish sounds wonderful.
At the old parish, where I was director, we also had a cemetery. We had little American flags on every single grave. Was beautiful.

Why should being anti-military and anti-government keep anyone from singing God Bless America?! It is a song asking God to bless our country. It is asking for God’s guidance and support. Wow, even if someone is anti-everything, you would think they would love this song!

I would go insane if I had to sing the same songs Year after year like that, haha!

My parish is not without it’s musical faults. :rolleyes:The organist plays so loud you can’t hear anyone singing even though people do sing. We also never sing much written after 1893, or so it seems, ;). But that may be changing soon.

Yes, we usually add something patriotic into the recessional hymn on patriotic holidays. Today, we sang one verse from a regular hymn and then switched into America, the Beautiful.

May God bless you all! 🙂

We typically sing a patriotic hymn for the Sunday preceding or immediately following Independence Day. Seeing as July 4th always falls near a Sunday of Ordinary Time, I see no problem closing with something patriotic.

We also usually do something patriotic for Memorial Day weekend, but Corpus Christi was the Sunday before Memorial Day this year, so hymns in honor of the Body and Blood of Christ took precedence.

I’m pretty fluid on liturgy, like I don’t have a problem, for instance, with contemporary Christian music in Mass (in fact, that was the Mass I went to today, a whole myriad of problems to get there and I was quite late, the devil at work)! But it was celebrated by a bi-ritual Melkite priest. So, there was indeed a little chanting. I guess that describes my opinion of music from a liturgical standpoint. My feeling is the Church is there to glorify God, and we don’t do that by singing hymns glorifying our country (not that there is anything wrong with that), but I do not feel Mass is the place. Again, this is just my opinion.

Unfortunately yes. Our parish sings God bless America.
Ugh.

I have no real point to make but it’s always been of interest to me why England’s national anthem has been “God SAVE our queen” and America’s now patriotic song is “God BLESS America.” A subtle theological shift? Or did someone sneeze? 🙂

Our song leaders always sing an extra song before Mass starts, and this time it was America the Beautiful.
