For some people Christmas remains a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, but the virgin birth is one part of the Christmas story that can cause controversy, even within the church.
A billboard at a New Zealand church has become the talk of the town for depicting a downcast Joseph lying beside Mary in bed with the heading ‘Poor Joseph. God was a hard act to follow’.
Church vicar Archdeacon Glynn Cardy said the sign was intended to challenge stereotypes about the way Jesus was conceived and get people talking about the Christmas story, but not everyone has taken it that way.
One paint-wielding vandal defaced the billboard just hours after it was erected on Thursday outside the St Matthew-in-the-City Anglican church in Auckland.

I have emailed this Church’s communications officer via their website and told them that the billboard is a disgrace and that as professed Christians they have made a grave error in their judgement and behaviour. I just typed in the Chrich address and their website comes straight up.

Just crazy. This church is playing into the lies of the mainstream media. “Poor Joseph, he didn’t have sex.”

Yeah, I am sure Joseph wallowed in self-pity knowing that the baby he was helping to raise was going to be the savior of the world.

And wasn’t Joseph a widower with children

More proof, if more is needed, that one can be an Anglican and a believing Christian, but that the latter is not a requirement for the former.

Blessings,

Gerry

I’d like to see what happened if he made some nasty crack about Mohammad on a billboard

with people like that leading the church, why bother even going? A stripper bar is a better place for teaching values that what is happening at this church.

This is the reply that I have had from the Church:

Thank you for your email. I have to give up against my wishes… While normally I would seek to answer your email personally, we are being overwhelmed by both the positive and negative responses to what we felt was a bit of fun that would get people to think beyond Christmas card theology. I would invite you to go to stmatthews.org.nz/nav.php?sid=498&id=999 and make your comment as part of the conversation. Over 4000 people went to this page yesterday. Glynn and I will try to respond as we can.

I urge people to visit the site and make their thoughts known.

I’m liberal in my thinking but I think this has gone too far. To me it is in poor taste. :o
