On the bolded, please be specific.

Properly understood, if they are using personal interpretation, then they are misusing sola scriptura.

Jon
Jon,

Misusing according to who? A Baptist won’t accept the Lutheran definition of Sola Scriptura. How did Luther see it anyway?

Sincerely,
Joe

You mention Luther, so this premise: if Luther is to get the credit/blame for the practice known as sola Scriptura, it seems just that we have the acknowdged default understanding of it, which is:
Sola Scriptura is the practice of the Church which holds all teachings, teachers, doctrine and dogma accountable to scripture as the final norm. Other writings - creeds, councils, ECF’s- are not equal to scripture, but are a witness to the truth of scripture. Therefore, Tradition is not excluded, and the ancient creeds affirmed.

Well, this is the “Catholic answers forum” so I can understand the amount of Protestants being outnumbered but I do find it rather entertaining that a Catholic poses a question and then tons of other Catholics jump on board to state how blind and misguided we are.

Catholics say they have the fullness of truth, while so do the Orthodox. Pope or no Pope? Who’s being guided by the Holy Spirit and who is so “clearly blinded in ignorance”?

Salvation through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, boys and girls. Accept Him, love Him, dedicate your lives to Him. And while you do it, believe that OSAS, or reject it. Believe in the primacy of the pope or reject it. But know that God is for you because you love Him with all your heart.

Or we can continue to argue over this and that and never work towards a greater unity. I love you all and believe that you have the fullest of love for God in your hearts. I don’t know if you’re misguided on any certain issue or not, but you love God and I rejoice in that. Try the same for us Protestants who dedicate our lives to Him.

It would be good Jon if you would explain the difference between solO scriptura and solA scriptura. A lot of posters, Including me don’t understand the difference just one letter can make.

To me a lot of the problem can be accounted to by Pietism which a lot of evangelicals hold. Seems that many who have discarded the sacraments have only “heart felt” ideas to rely on. Those “feelings” are different for each person, and thus the various denominations can teach different things.

I believe that this is completely the right attitude that we are to have toward one another. I’m not sure that it is how the Lord designed the Church to address matters of faith (doctrine), however.

ETA: In other words, while charity is a supreme virtue and the mark of true Christian fellowship (they will know us by the love we have for one another), charity is not the mechanism for understanding truths of the faith.

Broadly speaking, in solA scriptura the “alone” means that scripture is the only norm, or final norm. Nothing is equal to scripture. SolO scriptura, holds that scripture is the only thing to be considered at all. Generally, councils and creeds are of no particular value.

American Lutheranism is still recovering from Lutheran pietism of the past.

I wasn’t speaking of just Lutheranism, although present there I feel it is much more prevalent in Fundamentalist/Evangelical churches. It is for certain that Lutherans have not discarded the sacraments at all.

But the largest LCMS parish where I used to live has done away with liturgical worship in favor of a “festival of praise”.

If there is one synod where perhaps Pietism may pay too large a role, it is to me the
Wisconsin Synod.

.
Even those we do not call sacraments remain important rites of the Church.

. It is a disturbing trend, the move toward “mega-church” style worship. But, so long as the basic requirements for the mass are there - invocation, absolution, the proclamation of the word, creeds, sacrament, benediction - the style of music, so long as it reflects doctrine, is flexible.

I agree.
