The fact that we will experience “rest” upon the Lord’s return when others are facing judgement does not mean that we are not experiencing rest now in Christ. Hebrews tell us that we can experience “rest” today (now) and we do when we have faith in, and join with, Christ.2 THES. 1 [7] And to you who are troubled REST WITH US, WHEN THE LORD JESUS SHALL BE REVEALED FROM HEAVEN with his mighty angels, [8] In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Hebrews is clearly speaking of Gods sabbath day. I have asked people to explain how they rest in Christ and they really cant. Most answer in platitudes which convey nothing. It is very soft and nice to the ears to say your resting everyday with Jesus. But what does that mean? And if you come to know what that means why would anyone conclude that that means you no longer need to keep His 4th commandment? That being said the above scripture tells you when your rest with Jesus begins. Its after His 2nd coming.\QUOTE]
Its actually not a difficult subject - we indeed “rest” in Christ in the solice He provides to our souls - he accepts our burden (his Yoke is light) and he makes us new creatures in Christ. You are a Christian (per your prior posts, I believe you said so), do you not feel your rest in Christ? Hasn’t putting your faith in Christ given you a sense of warmth and security and forgiveness that you did not have before coming to faith? That is the “rest” which Christ provides and which has been deined Israel.
In terms of the 4th commandment - as noted in the prior posts - Christ came to “fulfill” the law and his rest fulfills the rest of the saturday Sabbath. The saturday Sabbath was a once per week “rest” replaced by the “every day rest” afforded to us in Christ. Sunday (the Lord’s Day) is not the saturday Sabbath - but a separation remembrance of the Lord’s resurrection. As a matter of tradition, its observance has adopted many (but not all) of the traditional observances associated with the Saturday sabbath under the Mosaic Law.
ISAIAH 14 [1] For the Lord will have mercy on Jacob, and WILL YET CHOOSE ISRAEL, and set them in their own land: and THE STRANGERS shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob. [2] And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the Lord for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors. [3] And it shall come to pass in the day that THE LORD SHALL GIVE THEE REST from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve,Israel has, in large part (except for a small remnant of believers who have accepted Christ as their Saviour) rebelled against the Lord and have not accepted Christ - thus they do not yet know His rest and will not know that rest until the “morn for the one whom they have pierced” and “call on the name of the Lord” (in the end times) as foretold in Zechariah. Interestingly (not a coincidence), this is consistent with Paul’s prophecy in Romans 11 that “after the full alottment of Gentiles comes in, “all Israel” will be saved”.Theres those “other stangers” again. Again, the above scripture is speaking of the 1000 yr period of rest. It is at that time the Lord shall give you rest.
I think we are a little off topic. If you choose to continue to observe the saturday Sabbath - you can do so. History shows us unmistakably that the earliest generations of Christians ceased to celebrate the Saturday Sabbath shortly after the destruction of the temple in 70Ad and continued (and already established practice) celebration of the Lord’s Day as a separate memorial of the resurrection.
