Is it scriptural to keep another day of rest other than Gods sabbath day. Why sunday? The reason i ask is we only have one shot at this. We have to get it right. In James we find that if you practice to break one of Gods commandments, youve broke them all. You are a transgressor. Can anyone show me out of scripture why we keep sunday as a day of rest and not the sabbath. Thank you.

Hey Verbum
My puter is so old and slow it is hard for me to go to links. Did that link provide scripture to back up what you said?

If you read the actual OT scriptures about the Sabbath, you’ll notice two things:
  1. The commandment has NOTHING to do with worship, and EVERYTHING to do with ceasing labor–a work stoppage that extended to one’s slaves and farm animals.
  2. There are other days besides Saturday that were called “Sabbath.” Now, if you’re going to observe the Sabbath, you can’t pick and choose which ones you observe. It’s either ALL of them or NONE of them.
In any case, services were held twice daily in the Tabernacle, Temple, and later in Synagoges to this day, especially the traditional ones. They were not merely on the Sabbath.

You’re talking about “keeping the Sabbath holy.” Are you saying there is a day in the week since Christ has come that we get to be UNholy and profane and live according to our own desires, and not by His word?

If you give me your e-mail, I’ll send you an article giving researchg into this matter by an SDA minister. He found out some surprising things.

BTW–are you aware that you are breaking the Sabbath by posting this ON the Sabbath?

Im not only aware that im not breaking the sabbath by posting but actually doing as scripture says. In point 2 you mentioned that i was to keep all sabbaths that God created for man. Thats fine with me as i know from the new testament that Jesus is Lord over those sabbath days. If He is Lord over those days, why should i bother looking for another day of rest? An sda minister? Why cant you tell me these surprising things? Im all ears.

The “short” answer is that the Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. Jesus fufilled the sabbath (per the book of hebrews). Jesus also fulfilled the remainder of the Mosaic Law (priestly functions, ceremonial laws), but the moral law continues. Notice how 9 of the 10 commandments are expressly repeated in the NT (the omission? the Sabbath - why - because it was fulfilled in Christ - our rest “today”). The remaining are the “moral laws” we must fulfill for ourselves and Jesus expands upon them in the beattitudes.

Re: Sunday - it is not the “Sabbath” (the 7th day), but became a day of rememberance of the resurrection in the earliest years of the Church and a day of breaking bread and partaking of the Eucharist. Over time, many of the “Sabbath” like observances were followed on Sunday - leading to “confusion” that the sunday is the “Sabbath” - In some respects, sunday can be thought of as following the pattern of rest in the 4th (or 3rd - depending upon which list) commandment.

I hope that helps.

Blessings,

Brian

As I understand it, the Sabbath was not passed on to the gentiles as something they had to observe. There was something similar in the Lord’s Day, but it’s not really the sabbath.

In Romans 14:1-6, Paul seems to group sabbath-observance along with dietary laws, and doesn’t impose those rules on the gentiles (at least thats how I read it).

The Sabbath is not Sunday, but begins at sunset on Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday.

Christians celebrate Sunday as the Lord’s day of rest, there are encyclicals and catechisms that elude to the Sabbath being Sunday, but Sunday is the 1st day of the week not the 7th.

So, scripturally, Christians do keep another day of the week rather than the one mentioned in Genesis as God’s rest and the one given on Mt. Sinai as a gift to the Israelites to observe and remember.

In James we find that if you practice to break one of Gods commandments, youve broke them all. You are a transgressor.
This seems to be the passage from Scripture you have in mind:
8If you really fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well. 9But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. **10For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. **11For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” said also, “Do not kill.” If you do not commit adultery but do kill, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. 13For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy; yet mercy triumphs over judgment. (James 2:8-13)
What “law” does James refers to that we must keep every point? The commandments cited by James in this passage appear in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. The commandment “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” appears in Leviticus 19:18 as part of the 619 commandments of the law of Moses, which includes the commandments to circumcise males on the eighth day (Leviticus 12:3) and to keep the kosher food laws. (Leviticus 11) If the whole law of Moses is to be understood, and thus kept, then we run into a problem because the commandments to circumcise and to keep the kosher food laws were abrogated by Jesus (Mark 7:18) and his apostles (Acts 15). If we restrict ourselves to just the explicit commandments given by Jesus in the New Testament (“love your neighbor as yourself,” “do not kill,” do not commit adultery," etc.), then you have a problem in citing this verse from James because Jesus and his apostles never explicitly commanded his followers to keep the sabbath nor did they ever condemn sabbath-breakers. On the contrary, St. Paul seems to indicate that keeping the sabbath day was abrogated by Christ’s coming. (Colossians 2:16-17, Romans 14:5, Galatians 4:10)

Well, St. Paul does a lot for St. Paul.

The Holy Spirit has not softened my heart towards that particular individual. Not that I bear him ill will, but I do not agree with many that he is the greatest apostle. He was mostly, all about himself, so I tend to read his writings (or his dictations) take what the Lord shows me is useful and toss a grain of salt on the rest.

With regard to the sabbath, it would have served his purpose to alter it from the actual Sabbath observed/remembered by Jews, because he was a tiny fish in that pond and had found a pond where he could be a bigger fish.

Hi again,

If you study the history of the early church (from non-biblical sources) for the first few centuries, there was some division between pagan converts who were less likely to observe the sabbath, and Jewish Christians who clung to that tradition.

Some areas kept the sabbath tradition going for longer than others. In palestine there were sabbath-keepers up until the 4th century. In Ethiopia that tradition continues until today.

In Bishop Ignatius of Antioch’s letters in the early second century, he seems to have observed both the sabbath and the Lord’s day in his diocese of Antioch.

When the Roman Empire became officially Christian, I think they tried to get all of Chistendom to use Sunday, although my memory is a bit vague on that. If you’re interested in the history you could look up Constantine and Sabbath.

I thank you all for your answers but there were no scriptures that you guys sent that actually said the day of rest was to be changed to sunday. I heard (history channel) that it wasnt changed till Constantine in the 3rd century after he said he saw a cross in the sky and he said God told him to go to war under this sign. While even after, he practiced the following of baal. Is this true?

If the sabbath was not changed by God, who changed it?

Matthew 15:9
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

And if man did change the commandment…well, the scripture above says quite a lot

No. If you have read any of the previous responses that refer to the writings of the early Church Fathers, you will already have seen that the worship on The Lord’s Day (Sunday) was practiced well before Constantine.

Patristic sources such as the Didache – written during apostolic times – show the day for worship was “the Lord’s Day” which is a clearly and exclusively Christian term meaning Sunday. The term does not appear in the Old Testament. If the practice of Sunday worship is traced back to the first century (as documented by evidence such as the Didache) – while the Apostles were still alive and directing the Church – then either the Apostles practiced Sunday worship too OR the universal Church in all provinces, cultures, and languages around the known world wherever the gospel message was spread during the first century unilaterally disobeyed the Apostles - and all without so much as one recorded word of protest from the Apostles! Which scenario seems more likely?

And if man did change the commandment…well, the scripture above says quite a lot
Jesus lay in His tomb on the Sabbath, but on the First Day He rose from the dead, inaugurating the New Creation (the First Creation began, likewise, on the First Day). Jesus changed the law by the very fact of His rising, not on the Sabbath, but on the First Day of the week. And, as we see in John 20:6, it was on the Day of Resurrection, the First Day, that the Lord breathed on the Apostles and bestowed upon them the Holy Spirit and the power to forgive or retain sins. Jesus entered into His Rest on the First Day and will come again to bring us to our rest in Him, thus we are not with those who celebrate the Sabbath in hope of the Messiah coming for the first time; rather, the Church anticipates each Sunday as its coming to its own rest in Him when He returns to bring His Bride to Himself.

If you read Scripture without the guidance of the Church Christ established to guide us to Him, then you are bound to misinterpret it and bound to fall for the conspiracy theories which anti-Catholics foist on the ignorant.

Hello FCGEM
Ive been reading the replies. Its just not real safe to put your trust in words that were written sometimes hundreds of years after Christ. Scriptures below are the reason i get my beliefs from the WORD rather than the words of men

MATT.24 [4] And Jesus answered and said unto them, TAKE HEED THAT NO MAN DECEIVE YOU.[5] For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many

So FCGEM who do you think the “many” are

1 JOHN 2 [18] Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, EVEN NOW ARE THERE MANY ANTICHRISTS; whereby we know that it is the last time. [19] They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

See, the bad guys were present even then

2 COR. 11 [13] For such are FALSE APOSTLES, deceitful workers, TRANSFORMING THEMSELVES INTO THE APOSTLES OF CHRIST. [14] And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. [15] Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

It would seem to be very dangerous to trust your salvation to the various religious leaders or to take hold to the doctrines of these men. They might appear to be ministers of righteousness but they are not.

2 PETER 2 [1] But there were FALSE PROPHETS also among the people, even as there shall be FALSE TEACHERS among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.[2] And MANY SHALL FOLLOW their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.[3] And through covetousness shall they WITH FEIGNED WORDS MAKE MERCHANDISE OF YOU:

Well FCGEM, do ya see while im a little leary about putting my belief in the words of man?

I am not anti-catholic. My whole family was raised catholic. My sister was a nun who worked with the poor in Peru. I was a good little altar boy. Well…except for one time when a fly kept landing on another altar boys nose. Did ya ever try holding back laughing in a place ya shouldnt be laughing. My dad wasnt to happy with us.

Hello FCGEM

The earliest writings that reflect the already-in-practice worship on the Lord’s Day are not from “hundreds of years after Christ.” In ca. A.D. 110 the St. Ignatius of Antioch (a martyr for the Faith), who with St. Polycarp was a hearer of St. John and the immediate successor of St. Peter to the bishopric of Antioch (so you’d think he’d know a thing or two about when the Christians were to worship) wrote: “If, then, those who walked in ancient customs came to a new hope, no longer sabbathing but living by the Lord’s Day, on which we came to life through Him and through His death. . .”

The Didache was written A.D. 140: “On the Lord’s Day of the Lord gather together, break bread and give thanks after confessing you transgressions so that your sacrifice may be pure.”

And around A.D. 146-155 St. Justin, Martyr wrote his First Apology: “The Day of the Sun is the day on which we all gather in a common meeting, because it is the first day, the day on which God, changing darkness and matter, created the world, and it is the day on which Jesus Christ our Savior rose from the dead.”
Scriptures below are the reason i get my beliefs from the WORD rather than the words of men. . .[etc]
No, actually you get your beliefs from your own misunderstanding of Scripture - that is most unwise. You’re just substituting yourself for those who actually have the authority from Christ to preserve His Self-Revelation; you have made yourself to be the arbiter of the meaning of Scripture. It’s always nice and easy to submit to the authority of self.

🙂 I didn’t say you were anti-Catholic; rather, I suggested that in your ignorance of the fullness of the Faith (certainly of this particular topic) you are being influenced by the anti-Catholicism of others.
