Going back to the church after years away I was visited by a demon - is there anyone out there with a similar experience? Can someone explain it?

Does this mean that the devil might pay me a visit as well, since I’m a 15-year old Catholic-in-training?
the devil is going to pay you visit after visit after visit… throughout life… that’s just the way he operates… but just remember (as i often forget to) that he cannot do ANYTHING wihtout God’s permission. Whatever he does, there is a reason for it… and good will come from it… if we let it… (by following Christ)…

God bless… I pray you never let the devil win and if in weakness you do… as we all do… that you keep fighting him… I pray you don’t make the same awful mistakes i made when i was young… (I drifted from the Cahtolic Church…got involved in various “things” i shouldn’t have  😦 ) )

I wouldn’t have done that if i had KNOWN the true teachings of the Church… but oh well… i found Her… and the past is the past…

This type of spiritual attack seems to occur at two times in your life: When you are falling away from God, and when you are returning. It does require some directed prayer and a knowledgeable response.

Father Frank Pavone maintains that we should never address Satan or any demons, rather ask God to rebuke them. We open dialog with evil when we address them. I had not heard this prior, but it makes excellent sense.

Have you a Spiritual Warfare Prayer? They are very powerful against spiritual harassment. Everything you have done sounds very good. We are in warfare with spirits, as the earth is the princedom of the evil one.

From the Book of Job 1:6-7: One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.”

Thus, he never loses a chance to lead us astray, either through deception, fear or intimidation. It appears he has tried all three on you - and was defeated. He will not stop trying, although he may leave you alone for a time. I woould advise you to pray a spiritual warfare prayer until you are well settled back into your faith. It is useful each time you feel the attacks.

What happened to me was that I kept seeing dark images moving in corners. But they disappeared when I turned my head. They were always in the process of leaving when I would notice them. The worst of it was when I was awakened by my bed being shaken. I work nights and this was during the day when wife and kids were at work or school. There was no other explanation. I began reciting one of the spiritual warfare prayers with all of the faith and trust I could muster and the problem went away.

BTW, here is a fascinating interview with a Vatican Exorcist Priest. I expected to be frightened, but quite the opposite actually occurred. We have tremendous power over evil, if we are strong in the Lord.

po18guy: What you’ve written is worth while reading and pondering. Thank you so much. And thanks for the link to that interview - I’ve bookmarked it and promise to read and comment it tomorrow (it’s hard not to do it right now, but it’s one in the morning here and I still have work to do. So - for now - just a little thing:
I think there’s a very simple explanation to why you should never address the devil or any demon. Just like your guardian angel won’t know things about you unless you tell him - neither will your demon (I am assuming that Aquinas is right about everyone having a “personal” demon, even though I know it has not been proved).
Even IF you’re simply yelling at your demon to go away, or insulting him (as i did) you are risking telling him something he didn’t already know. I think that I, for example, accidentally told mine that I am more that usually proud and rather like inventing witty insults. That is to give him ammunition - ideas about how to tempt me. And I shouldn’t have.

so true… It is definitely true for me… I was lost for many years… because i knew jesus in my head, but it was only head knowledge… I stayed away from God because i thought He was too holy for me, etc… but God knew how powerless i was… and i belive the awful things that eventually happened to me were His way of bringing me back to Him… Even then i didn’t turn to Him except through a miracle (long story & maybe most people wouldn’t think it was a “miracle” but i know that it was…)…

thank you so much for sharing this Interview… I already have read about exorcisms and knew most of it, but a good reminder is always appreciated… especially concernin how we should not speak to demons… I used to say to Satan, “Be gone” or some other thing but i notice that when i totally ignore him, that seems more powerful… way more…

The devil is always there, prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. To deal with a demon, you must have the authority of Jesus Christ… you must be born again of the spirit. If this demon got you back into the Catholic church, then his mission was successful in my eyes.

(sorry if that offends Catholics, but I’m protestant.)

I also want to tell the joke that taught me not to be intimidated by the devil.
A monk sits all alone in an old library late at night, reading by the light of a single candle. Suddenly he feels the presence of someone supernatural behind me. Terrified and gasping for air he turns around. As he sees the devil standing behind him he exhales and says “Oh, was it only you?” and turns back to his book and continue to read.
I’ve heard that attributed to St. Theresa of Avila. Supposedly she was woken up by the enemy and rolled over and said “oh, it’s only you” and went back to sleep. 😃

you don’t know what you are talking about.

I was lost in a world of sin and powerlessness and misery until i found the Catholic Church… It was the only thing that could save me from… well, now that i think about, it saved me from a lot of things…

One important thing it saved me from was delusional thinking. For years and years, i thought God felt abot me the same way certain people in my life did… (i wasn’t good enough, etc…). It was the rosary that got me passed that hideous belief. That kind of false belief system can really mess a person up… it keeps a person away from the only One who can help - Jesus Christ…

I know Jesus far, far, better now that i am fully Catholic than i ever have in my life… and i was “born again” when i was 15… I am much older than that now…

“Born again”, per se, does not save you from Satan… or not for very long… I am proof of that…

“You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.”

that was, in my opinion, very offensive

Good thing this is not an Irish Catholic bar! You must carefully discern all spirits, according to the Apostle John. How are you so sure that the demon did not lead you away from the truth? Do you eat the Body of Christ, as He Himself commanded? No? Problem. You are practicing a diluted form of Christianity. I would ponder that.

First of all let me apologize: I’m from Sweden and this is certainly an area where my English isn’t sufficient. If I sometimes use the wrong words (does, for example, demons visit?) I’m counting on your forgiveness.
I was away from the church for what seemed like a very long time. After years of secular life i ended up with a group och existensialist communists who read De Sade and Foucault and Marx. I guess every prodigal son out there knows when they hit bottom - I still believe i’m probably the only one who found salvation in Foucault!
John Paul II died and I found myself crying and praying in my studio apartment in the left-wing quarters of my city. And I started going to mass again. Six months later I could not stand anything about my old life anymore. I was struggling to keep the friends I had made. I had a picture of Mary in my apartment but I kept my childhood crucifix in a drawer, since I was afraid my friends would totally turn their backs on me if I’d hang it on the wall. I felt guilty about hiding Jesus in a drawer but I still did.
And so one night I dreamt, - i don’t know what - all I can remember is the face of a demon grinning at me. I woke up terrified and spent a good hour convincing myself it wasn’t for real. I didn’t believe in the existence of the devil, you see, even though I could clearly sense that the demon was standing in my apartment, by my bed. I couldn’t SEE him but I knew him to be there.
I went back to sleep - the dream came back. I was desperate to get some sleep and so while muttering to myself that I was being totally ridiculous I got up and fetched the crucifix, a needle and a hammer and hung it and a rosary above my bed. I said a few hail marys and fell asleep. And slept through the night.
The next night the dream was back. The demon was in his corner by my bed when I woke up and I was so afraid I could hardly move. Somehow I knew what to do. For years, and especially a few weeks before it first happened, God had equipped me. A priest had given me a prayerbook - in it i found St Michaels rosary. I remembered another time when God had made sure i’d treasure chapter twelve in the book of revelations. I read that chapter out loud to the demon - I could tell he didn’t like it. A friend had told me an innocent joke about a monk and the devil that somehow inspired me not to be afraid. Someone had gotten me holy water in a bottle. All of a sudden i found that the completorium i had known since i was a child was full of prayers of deliverence. I don’t know how i never realised that before. It went on like that. I took to torturing this demon most nights. And I always succeeded. Or rather, God always did. After a while I wasn’t afraid of those dreams anymore - just irritated. I’d wake up from the dream muttering “oh would you let me get some sleep already - i’m sick and tired of you and your ghouls!”
A few weeks and perhaps 20-30 dreams later it stopped.
During that time I had never asked a priest for help - I assumed no one would believe me. But I told my sister and she got very upset and told me to get the apartment blessed. So I asked a priest to help me with that, and he did. I told the priest something of what had been happening, and he blessed the crucifix above my bed with some special prayer. Then I emailed another priest and asked for advice. He said he believed me, and that the fact that I was in the process of going back to the Church makes it very believable. Other than that he said I shouldn’t worry. This was not obsession. Or a curse. This was God letting me fight a little (emphasis on little) to set my head straight. It was a bit of a test, I had passed, and there’s no reason to believe I’m in any trouble. And since then nothing has happened. I’ve taken a liking to St Michael and my own guardian angel (I hope he forgives me for not believing in his existence for the first 22 years of my life).

But I can’t help wondering about the devil’s strategy. I mean he is a very intelligent spirit. What did he hope to accomplish? Did he think he could scare me back into sin? He scared me right into the arms of God! Who in their right minds finds his lies attractive when you’ve just been scared senseless by one of his guys? Today as I was browsing the forums I found at least one very similar story - the devil showing his ugliness just as you’re being saved. And the priest i emailed said it is common. And I’ve read about it since. So - does anyone have a story to share? Or an explanation?
When stationed in California, years ago, I foolishly decided to convert to Lutheranism (long, boring story). While showering the morning of the day I was supposed to launch the conversion process, I was overcome by fear, and stayed home. It never happened, thankfully. I’ve never contemplated such spiritual suicide since. :tsktsk:

I reported the post, using the triangle in the upper right corner. He/she has all of the classic warning signs, such as “New member” and small “c” christian. Many such new members flame on in here, throw out very shallow, razor-thin theology, then either disappear or are banned because of their rule violations. This is one we must keep an eye on. Shame.

Phew, it’s not easy to be a new member around here! 😉

After going to bed last night I thought about myredeemerlives insult. And actually started to like it. Sure, it shocked and angered me, but I can see his/her point.
If protestantism is what is true then we catholics are terribly wrong. We’re not semi-true fellow christians - we’re idiots dancing around a gold idol. It’s the logical conclusion for a convinced protestant to make.
And something in me rather admirers myredeemerlives for accepting the logical consequence of the protestant faith. I think that proves that he/she is looking for answers, looking for truth. That of course means she/he is likely to find it. As long as her reason is guided by faith everything is gonna be fine …

I’d just like to copy in a quote from the interview:
"Does he have more respect for Mary than for God himself?

Apparently. Otherwise no holds are barred, and everyone is insulted: the priests, everyone present, the bishops, the Pope, even Jesus Christ. But never the Virgin Mary. It’s an enigma."

Very interesting isn’t it?

I found not only that, but the fact that fear is not involved, to be absolutely fascinating. We are subject to demons only if we invite them in some way. This is very comforting!

Fear not being involved doesn’t surprise me. I got pretty good pretty quickly at not being scared. Must be some special grace.
Now, three years later I have to fight the fear back whenever I think about demons and such things. Because I’ve been safe for a long time. And, I guess, gone sloppy.

It depends on what you mean by spiritual warfare prayer. It’s a term I’m not familiar with. My warfare basically consists of confession, completorium and the basic prayers: Angele Dei, Sancte Michael Archangele, Agnus Dei.
I also got something interesting from a priest here in Sweden. It is a new prayer from America called St. Michael Shield of Truth Prayer. To me, it seems to be very powerful and I recommend everyone to check it out (especially Americans!)

I’m not saying I vouch for the visionary - everyone has to make up their own minds.

I can’t even imagine having that happening when you have a wife and kids to think about!

Ah, but the Lord knows your heart, and sends that which , although uncomfortable at times, is best for your soul.

Sad fact is that I live in a liberal archdiocese that does not have an exorcist priest. That may change, however.

Fight the good fight.

I remember reading another interview with an exorcist who said the Evil One is afraid of Mary. Apparently, since she was conceived without sin (i.e., she is what ALL humans would be if Adam and Eve had not fallen), the Evil One is terrified of her. Priests, bishops, popes, and Christ all oppose the Evil One. Mary is the only human who shows the Evil One that he was wrong to oppose G_D in His plan to create mortal beings with immortal souls, that such creations truly would be greater than the angels.
