Going back to the church after years away I was visited by a demon - is there anyone out there with a similar experience? Can someone explain it?

First of all let me apologize: I’m from Sweden and this is certainly an area where my English isn’t sufficient. If I sometimes use the wrong words (does, for example, demons visit?) I’m counting on your forgiveness.
I was away from the church for what seemed like a very long time. After years of secular life i ended up with a group och existensialist communists who read De Sade and Foucault and Marx. I guess every prodigal son out there knows when they hit bottom - I still believe i’m probably the only one who found salvation in Foucault!
John Paul II died and I found myself crying and praying in my studio apartment in the left-wing quarters of my city. And I started going to mass again. Six months later I could not stand anything about my old life anymore. I was struggling to keep the friends I had made. I had a picture of Mary in my apartment but I kept my childhood crucifix in a drawer, since I was afraid my friends would totally turn their backs on me if I’d hang it on the wall. I felt guilty about hiding Jesus in a drawer but I still did.
And so one night I dreamt, - i don’t know what - all I can remember is the face of a demon grinning at me. I woke up terrified and spent a good hour convincing myself it wasn’t for real. I didn’t believe in the existence of the devil, you see, even though I could clearly sense that the demon was standing in my apartment, by my bed. I couldn’t SEE him but I knew him to be there.
I went back to sleep - the dream came back. I was desperate to get some sleep and so while muttering to myself that I was being totally ridiculous I got up and fetched the crucifix, a needle and a hammer and hung it and a rosary above my bed. I said a few hail marys and fell asleep. And slept through the night.
The next night the dream was back. The demon was in his corner by my bed when I woke up and I was so afraid I could hardly move. Somehow I knew what to do. For years, and especially a few weeks before it first happened, God had equipped me. A priest had given me a prayerbook - in it i found St Michaels rosary. I remembered another time when God had made sure i’d treasure chapter twelve in the book of revelations. I read that chapter out loud to the demon - I could tell he didn’t like it. A friend had told me an innocent joke about a monk and the devil that somehow inspired me not to be afraid. Someone had gotten me holy water in a bottle. All of a sudden i found that the completorium i had known since i was a child was full of prayers of deliverence. I don’t know how i never realised that before. It went on like that. I took to torturing this demon most nights. And I always succeeded. Or rather, God always did. After a while I wasn’t afraid of those dreams anymore - just irritated. I’d wake up from the dream muttering “oh would you let me get some sleep already - i’m sick and tired of you and your ghouls!”
A few weeks and perhaps 20-30 dreams later it stopped.
During that time I had never asked a priest for help - I assumed no one would believe me. But I told my sister and she got very upset and told me to get the apartment blessed. So I asked a priest to help me with that, and he did. I told the priest something of what had been happening, and he blessed the crucifix above my bed with some special prayer. Then I emailed another priest and asked for advice. He said he believed me, and that the fact that I was in the process of going back to the Church makes it very believable. Other than that he said I shouldn’t worry. This was not obsession. Or a curse. This was God letting me fight a little (emphasis on little) to set my head straight. It was a bit of a test, I had passed, and there’s no reason to believe I’m in any trouble. And since then nothing has happened. I’ve taken a liking to St Michael and my own guardian angel (I hope he forgives me for not believing in his existence for the first 22 years of my life).

But I can’t help wondering about the devil’s strategy. I mean he is a very intelligent spirit. What did he hope to accomplish? Did he think he could scare me back into sin? He scared me right into the arms of God! Who in their right minds finds his lies attractive when you’ve just been scared senseless by one of his guys? Today as I was browsing the forums I found at least one very similar story - the devil showing his ugliness just as you’re being saved. And the priest i emailed said it is common. And I’ve read about it since. So - does anyone have a story to share? Or an explanation?

“oh would you let me get some sleep already - i’m sick and tired of you and your ghouls!”

Your response above I think is probably the very best attitude to adopt towards Satan. Contemptuous!

Sure it could have been a demon and especially since you were returning to The Church and your Faith, beginning to pray again…….and if one has explained to a priest what happened and he affirms its validity, then accept this and the valid nature of your experience, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If Satan knows some good is about to be achieved, it may move almost Heaven and earth to stop it. But there is no reason at all to fear Satan although it can be a very scarey experience indeed - though if the attack is sustained with prayer and Faith one can arrive for sure at sheer contempt for it devoid of fear………i.e treat it with contempt as you have above in your Post. The threads below may help.
It can be near on impossible to discern the reasons why a demonic attack may take place in the manner it does, which can be quite varied. For the most intelligent of creation, it sure can be stupid.

There has been a couple of Daily Meditations on Satan and how to deal with it recently:

I thought your English was excellent!!!

Thank you for your kind and humorous respons! But I have one warning to say about making fun of the devil. I did that quite a lot. I’d laugh at my demon and insult him. I was not afraid of him anymore and felt he was ridiculous. But after all of it was over I read books about demons and exorcism (mainly Kreeft and Amorth) and found out that your not supposed to address the demon at all. Unless you’re an exorcist. I ought to have talked to God and the saints and the angels alone. Let THEM talk to the demon if you really want to hurt him. It is a war going on. But I’m supposed to be like the soldiers who bring equipment and food to the front line.
God forgave me my errors - I didn’t know what I was doing or what I was risking. But if it would have been “the real deal” - such as obsession or a curse - talking to the demon would have been very dangerous.
I also want to tell the joke that taught me not to be intimidated by the devil.
A monk sits all alone in an old library late at night, reading by the light of a single candle. Suddenly he feels the presence of someone supernatural behind me. Terrified and gasping for air he turns around. As he sees the devil standing behind him he exhales and says “Oh, was it only you?” and turns back to his book and continue to read.

In the case of possession one must not address the devil(s) other than an exorcist. An attack or assault by Satan I think is something different. Be guided by whatever Father had to say to you and rest in that.
I ought to have talked to God and the saints and the angels alone. Let THEM talk to the demon if you really want to hurt him. It is a war going on.
I sure didn’t mean not to pray about the assault and to ask The Lord to guard and protect one. Prayer goes without saying and it was terribly remiss of me not to state this and underscore it too. The attitude one may adopt to an attack or assault is not so much to hurt Satan, as to try to get the thing to absent itself pronto.

To totally ingnore Satan during an attack or assault is another weapon…and certainly in the case of possession, and a different matter, one must not address the demon at all rather only the exorcist. There is something to be feared in this situation from what I have read which apparently is why one must not enter into any sort of conversation or address the thing.

Thanks again Barb. I don’t think I misunderstood you - please don’t think I did. Prayer goes without saying. I think you make excellent points and I certainly agree with you that the best way to deal with satan and the other demons is to show them no respect whatsoever.
One has to sort out one thing in ones head: Fear the devil because he hates you and wants you dead. Don’t fear the devil because he can’t hurt you unless you let him. Both attitudes are correct, I believe, and somehow you need to combine them.

No worries or problems… I did not misunderstand you at all but I knew I was very remiss not to underscore prayer and reliance on The Lord totally and not oneself…no matter the attitude one may eventually develop towards any sort of sustained assault.

👍

The best way of all as we have agreed I think is to speak to a priest and be guided by him after explaining fully what is happening or happens…spiritual direction is very important especially in instances that are the subject of this thread. This is another great weapon against Satan and it’s wiles and ways - Satan fears the priesthood with a will, along with great personal devotion to Our Lady and St. Michael…primarily to The Lord and His Complete Power over Satan.

I think we are really in agreement!

Talk to a priest. Yes: especially in Sweden, you will have a hard time finding someone who believes you. But this is not for amateurs.

This was all a couple of years ago and I found not one but THREE great swedish priests (I’m pretty lucky) who all helped me in their own ways. All of them said I need not worry unless something else happen. And nothing has happened for more than three years.
I am just fascinated by this apparent strategy of the devil. What happened to me is not uncommon. It tends to happen when souls find their way back to the church. The priests and exorcists I’ve consulted are saying these kind of things are happening more and more. And yet the silence (certainly in Sweden but elsewhere too, I believe) on these matters is heavy.

Demons are real, as are angels. I have seen demons in visions. They are unpleasant and frightening.
This may be God’s way of getting you back to Mass. I can tell you one thing, since I’ve had those visions, I have been very faithful! The demons cannot touch us if we are faithful Christians.

If one cannot find a priest to speak to about such a matter, there is still no need for fear or be overly anxious/afraid, for The Lord would not allow one to be in a situation that was spiritually hopeless and this is our Faith. If one cannot find a priest to speak with, then trust in The Lord to deliver one.

"If Jesus has already defeated Satan, that means that we don’t have to live under the devil’s influence anymore!
  • Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus has given us all the tools we need to deal with the devil’s schemes and tactics.
  • He even promised us that in his name, we can command evil spirits to depart from us (Mark 16:17)."

I had been raised Catholic but left the Church early in life. In my twenties I began reading the bible. I became ill for a few weeks and during this time I began to seek God in earnest. When I’d read the bible at night, I wouldn’t be able to sleep. I woke once with the same experience you described- the devil or a demon grinning in my face. A sense or the presence of evil pervaded the entire time-about a two week period. It always felt cold in my apartment no matter how far I set the thermostat up-especially in the bedroom where this strange spiritual battle seemed to be taking place most intensely. When I opted not to read the bible, I’d sleep like a baby.

But I persevered. I think, as someone told you, it was a test, but also an education about the reality of evil. God, it’s said, uses evil to bring about good and in the Book of Job the devil even asks to test Job and is allowed to. As to why the devil would bother to do this I think we should ask, Why would anyone hate or disobey God to begin with? Maybe the devil’s not really so bright as we think and, in any case, I believe that all the evil and opposition and suffering we face in this world is allowed for the very purpose of getting us to wise up and, like you said, scare us back into the arms of God. One way or the other I guess the devil’s job will always be to oppose God no matter what and, who knows?-maybe sometimes it works.

I am very relieved for you. Yes: people who are serious about coming to Our Lord are definitely target game for the bad guy.

FHansen! So you know what I’m talking about then!. Although the temperature-thing never happened to me, I understand it happens a lot. Thank you so much for telling that story.
I think it’s important for people to know that this sometimes happens to people just as they’re setting things straight. It didn’t happen to me because I was moving INTO a sinful life, but because i was escaping it. I think CS Lewis is right when he says the devil is a lot more powerful when he’s hidden.
I like to think of what happened like this: I live inside a bubble of love. It’s a massive bubble so strong and so thick that it keeps me unaware of that I’m living my life in the midst of a battle fought by awesome creatures. Creatures and God I should say. When I had these dreams God decided to take the tiniest needle and poke the tiniest hole in my bubble. And a little of the evil from outside oozed in. He knew what he was doing. He would not risk me. Why the devil decided to play along, though, is beyond me.
As for the devil being smart - he most certainly is. There’s no doubt about that. He is pure spirit and more intelligent than the human mind can fathom. But he’s still wrong and he’s still just a creation.

Gittles: you’ve had a serious experience here. The best thing I can add to what folks have said is this: go to mass daily, or as often as you can. This the devil hates. Consider wearing a scapular as well: it’s an excellent sacramental, and consider sprinkling holy water in your residence.

I’m 45. I’ve read Marx, Foucault, and so forth. But evil does exist; the devil does exist, no matter how much we desperately wish to explain him out of existence.

Maxply: Foucault is very logical. And wrong from beginning to end. The same goes for Marx, Sartre and all the others. They presupposes god does not exist and logically goes from there. If God does not exist De Sade is right and all of his horribleness will come over us. But he’s wrong. That’s the good news.
When I said I found salvation in Foucault I meant he was my low point.I read it and realized it was terrible. And untrue. And that I needed to go back home.

Wow, neat story! I believe satan is alive and well in our world today and most certainly attacks anyone trying to grow close to God.

I had a dream when I was a teenager that changed me. I was in a dark. dreary, large house trying to find my way out. Suddenly a dark and sinister force was right behind me trying to touch me. I ran down a long hallway that had closed doors on the left side so it was dark, but open doors on the right with some mottled sunshine straining to come through. When I got the end of the hallway there was an open door and Jesus was just standing next to it. He didn’t say anything but pointed to the open door. Now the strange part. The door opened into a large American type garage and the large garage door was raised about 2 feet. A farmer was standing next to it holding a pitchfork and a pig was next to him. The farmer yelled “JUMP!” and pounded his pitchforkk once, meaning to jumpe at the opening of the garage door. I tried and hit the ground thenwound up runnning back down the hallway again. The same thing happend two more times. The third time when the farmer yelled “JUMP!” and banged his pitchfork I jumped again but thsi time flew under the garage door and out into a beautiful sky. Then I woke up. Although I was about 17 at the time the dream got me thinking about God and Jesus and really started the spiritual ball rolling for me. It took many years to get fully into the Christian faith and finally back into the Catholic church but I keep going back to that dream as the turning point.

Praise be to God!

Simon

I tend to think of it more like we’re living in a bubble of ignorance or denial about evil. It amazes me when I read people who argue that there’s no such thing as objective morality, for example. Once we’re aware of evil our own powerlessness over it becomes more evident and good also becomes more apparent by contrast and something we should thirst for. And God, by His mercy, has revealed Himself and the nature of the world we live in so that we have the opportunity to turn back to Him, the source of all goodness. Sometimes it just takes a little slap to wake us up.

sbriton: i hope you don’t mind but my dream made me laugh out loud. In a good way though. If a pig farmer was needed to get you back to the lord then a pig farmer you shall get! 🙂
