Most theologians believe the book of Job is pure poetry, a beautiful parable told to explain why bad things happen to good people. Is God up there walking and talking with Satan and doing such things, no way they exclaim!
For me I don’t see why one couldn’t read the book of Job literally, not that they are playing games at all but we know that Satan can’t do anything without God’s consent, and we know that any evil that happens will ultimately bring about and is allowed for good.
I think that one of satans greatest tricks is getting us to believe that such things like him working in this world are ridiculous fables.
I am reminded of the Pope (can’t remember his name) who in 1884 had a vision of Jesus, St Michael and Satan where Satan was begging for and given 100 years to attempt to destroy Christ’s Church. Incidentally that was the time and the Pope who came up with the St Michael prayer. Which whether it be about the book of Job or about this time I think is really appropriate and needed.
St Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle, be thou our safeguard against the malice and snares of the devil. Rebuke him oh God, we humbly beseech You, and do thou oh prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
