Going green: Vatican expands mission to saving planet, not just souls
By Carol Glatz and Alicia Ambrosio
Catholic News Service
VATICAN CITY (CNS) – Expanding its mission from saving souls to saving the planet, the Vatican is going green.
A giant rooftop garden of solar panels will be built next year on top of the Paul VI audience hall, creating enough electricity to heat, cool and light the entire building year-round.
“Solar energy will provide all the energy (the building) needs,” said the mastermind behind the environmentally friendly project, Pier Carlo Cuscianna, head of the Vatican’s department of technical services.

(not sure if this is best here, or over in secular news… )

"While not revealing how much the solar project will cost, Cuscianna said **“it will pay for itself in a few years” **from the savings on energy bills.

Whatever solar power the hall is not using will be funneled into the Vatican’s energy grid and benefit other energy needs, he said."

Sounds like some good reasons to me. The Church will always be more concerned with souls. But we should also be concerned with waste.

Good for them – I have a water furnace (very economical heating and cooling system) and a 185-acre tree farm. They should save all they can on energy.

But when it comes to endorsing “Global Warming” (or whatever the latest predicted calamity is), the Church is 2,000 years old – and it didn’t get that way by jumping on every cockamamie fad that came down the pike.

What makes the OP think the world’s gone crazy. The Church needs to lead on matters of climate change, and this is an easy symbol. Good on the Vatican I say!

Thirty some odd years ago, the “experts” were predicting a new Ice Age. There were some who seriously proposed spreading lamp black on the polar ice caps to absorb more heat and prevent that disaster.

Having narrowly avoided that disaster, we ought to be cautious about jumping over the next cliff we come to.

Makes sense.

Even if the idea came from Cardinal Gore;)
Cardinal Al Gore should practice what he preaches. Maybe he could sell a couple of limos and his private jet. How about his twenty room mansion?

YAY…THIS IS SUCH GREAT NEWS…We all need to do our part to save our planet…from nature to our babies…we must not kill off our planet!!! Thanks so much for posting this. :bounce: <—get it? I’m green…😃

I think that it is great that the Vatican is trying to conserve money and operate more efficiently. Money saved in operations costs can be routed back to funding more important ministerial work.

I do understand the OP’s sentiment, though- equating saving souls to saving the planet is just a little too close to the quasi-religious cultishness of extreme environmentalism where environmental science is the new wing of moral theology.

We pay to keep the lights on at the Vatican. Every dollar spent on the Vatican’s electric bill is a dollar that doesn’t go to Catholic schools or other critical Church functions.

But I agree – there isn’t an “environmental theology.” The last Papal Conclave did not elect Al Gore, and there has to be a reason for that.😛

Taking care the planet is good for the believers, and for example not wasting petroleum would be a fantastic option for drying the islamic terrorism and the building of mosques in US and in Europe.
They have more relationships that it seems.

I think this is great!

One, it will save the Vatican money to use it for other important issues such as evangelizing and also helping the poor.

Two, we need to protect our environment by being more effecient with our energy resources and reduce pollution whether or not you believe in restricting emissions causing Global Warming or not.

ultra cool! when you’re saving the planet, you’re saving souls too.
