Ok here are my questions.
I have been interested in this situation for a while. This is what I want to do so I would like some (name removed by moderator)ut.
I have the opportunity to go to a TLM (which is not available within 5 hours of me) at an SSPX Chapel 20 minutes from my house. I have put much prayer, thought and time into the issue of the SSPX. But I have never met or seen or talked to anyone who is SSPX. I would like ot go to experience something I have put time and effort defending lately. I want to go to be educated about them and to experience a TLM which I have only been to 2 TLMs in my life.
So, our Bishop has stated that it does not fulfill our obligation nor are they Catholic so we should not go.

Can I go, for the purpose of going to a TLM. And if I do go, should I receive?

I am leaning toward going and not recieveing and then going to my regular Mass later that day. (which will be a culture shock going from a TLM to our parish’s 5 Pm Sunday Mass.

Thoughts?

Sure I would go to experience the traditional Mass. I am fortunate to have two or three TLM’s available, even though they are a long way to drive. I have attended the SSPX Masses about once or twice a year when we visit my brother-in-law.

At present there is still lots of controversey regarding the SSPX and if you want to get lots of folks hostile, just say something nice about them. The discussions are still a long way from over regards their return to the church. They do celebrate a pure 1962 Mass. I’ll leave the arguments up to those that normally descend upon these threads.

The official position of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei (speaks for the Church on these issues) is that if a Catholic has no access to a TLM of the diocese or a society in good standing (Iike the FSSP, ICK, etc) and that Catholic wishes to assist the SSPX chapel out of love for the traditional Mass and not because of a disobedient attitude, then it is permissible.

So if that describes you, the Church says you can go.

But as far as I know the Church still says don’t go to confession with an SSPX priest for now.

So, our Bishop has stated that it does not fulfill our obligation nor are they Catholic so we should not go.

It has never been stated, by those in authority to say so, that the SSPX members are not Catholic. So don’t let that keep you from going. I am a member of the SSPX and am blessed to be so. Good luck on your search for tradition!!

I am in your exact same position. What I thought I might do is pretty much what you said. Go to the Mass at the SSPX chapel for an informative experience and still fulfill my Sunday Mass obligation at my regular parish. Oh, and I don’t plan on receiving Holy Communion.

Please post your experience, if you decide to go.

On the spiritual level, you are treading on thin ice, as the SSPX is currently motivated by the spirit of disobedience. A spirit motivates them, just as one motivates each and every one of us. You are toying with the spiritual realm here - and not the Holy Spirit, which always unites. If you first mentally, then physically go there, you are making yourself available to the spirit of disobedience. Have you spoken with a good, holy in-communion Priest about what you plan on doing, and why you are doing it?

If you want a Latin mass experience, this is NOT the way to experience it. This is the devil waiting to lure you away from obedience. Period.

The SSPX is something to watch and pray for, not something to dabble in.

Your bishop speaks for the Church. It’s a no-brainer to obey one’s bishop in all things short of sin. Jesus was taken up to high mountain and shown all the kingdoms of the world and all their glory, and was offered them all. You’re being offered the smell of incense and Latin, and are asking us if you should disregard the wise counsel of the Church.

Indeed, but what if his Bishop says “don’t go there?”

I would go for sure. I have to drive 30+ minutes each way to a reverant Novus Ordo Mass. Even this Mass no where near fills my spiritual needs as the TLM the same church offers once a month. Went to Destin last week and had to listen to what sounded like childrens lullibies for the music. I am so close to falling back away from the Church because of the lack of Latin Masses that fulfill my spiritual needs. I say go and experience the Mass of all time.

Appeal to Rome?

Isn’t that how we got cautionary reponses in the first place?
Indeed, but now there’s different responses, isn’t there? Why go to a church that requires mental gymnastics and fancy language to justify it? And aren’t you just adding to the cycle of disobedience by not listening to your bishop?

Added “bonus”; if you’re under mortal sin, you can’t even go to confession there, so no Eucharist for you.

It’s more than that. And you know it. All of your latin putdowns really put down the Church herself. You are attacking an entire era pre V2.

It isnt about smells and bells but rather other things.
I think your bias is unwarranted.

I’m sorry, where in my post was there any Latin putdowns?

"Mental gymnastics and fancy language" refers to the mental exercises one needs to take in order to justify going to a Mass at a SSPX, and the language used in the documents detailing what one can and cannot do in regards to the SSPX.

“Well, it’s valid **BUT **illicit BUT if I go WITHOUT a schismatic attitude and because I have a HEARTFELT DESIRE for the Extraordinary Form and if I don’t go to their invalid confessions, I MIGHT be able to go **IF **my Bishop has said it’s fine. MAYBE”.

That’s what I call mental gymnastics, you need to jump through hoops to justify things.

I’m not referring to Latin when I say “fancy language”, I’m referring to the ED documents where they very carefully worded what they said.

Please, tell me where this is “Latin putdowns” in my post.

I misread, I’m sorry. While I disagree with your explanation I can see where you are coming from. Sorry, I jumped on you, I am a little clouded by what you have written in other threads. I am interested in the whole Bishop thing. I will post what appeared in our diocisian newspaper. Our Bishop is not friendly to the TLM. So even though some priests have offered to do it. It is frowned upon. I know about the MP but the TLM to satisfy the MP is 5 hours and hundreds of miles from the main population centers.

Apology accepted 🙂

My opinions of the EF are no different than others who follow mendicant spirituality. I’m not sure what I have posted in other threads that would make you think I’m anti-EF,

Personally, I couldn’t go to that chapel; I go to confession before Mass every week. And due to the SSPX confessions being invalid, I wouldn’t be able to receive the Eucharist there.

Things like that, personally, would give me pause. But that’s just me.

This is the “official” from the diocesan newspaper.
Members of the schismatic Society of St. Pius X, the Lefebvrites, are currently operating three churches in Idaho:
  • Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, New Plymouth; Priest: Father Christopher Hunter, SSPX;
  • Immaculate Conception Church, Post Falls; Priests: Father Crane, Father
    Hewko and Father Morgan, SSPX;
  • St. Joseph Mission, Saint Maries; Priest: Father Leo Boyle, SSPX.
The Society of St. Pius X is not in communion with the Roman Catholic
Church and has no connection with the Diocese of Boise. Any sacraments
conducted by this entity, under the title Catholic, are considered illicit.
This was in January of this year.

True, but I will be going to confession the day before at my own parish and then attending my own parish Sunday evening.

I do have pause. I am struggling with this decision.

I can’t say I don’t blame you. Before I started going to my parish, they were doing something that gave me second thoughts. I was considering leaving because of this one thing, everything else was fine. What changed my mind?

They were asked to stop that one thing and they stopped it immediately. I was impressed with their obedience to legitimate authority. Nine years later, I’m still there.

I will pray for you, friend. I understand what gives you spiritual nourishment you is far away geographically, I really do. I used to commute three hours (combined, there and back) to get to my parish, because that’s where my “home” is. But if you eat something that’s been left out of the fridge too long you might get sick (regardless of what kind of food it is).

Blessings (time for sleep!)

Its more than latin and incense. The counsel of the church gave us the MP.🤷
