A lot of people on this forum, and a lot of people of faith in general make me really nervous, and I constantly feel like i’m going straight to hell.

I have faith, and my faith is ingrained in the belief that there is one God and a true God that has done wonders for me in my life. Happens to be that, by growing up in the catholic home, I discovered the God of Isaac, Jacob and David, and I felt an instant connection that, when I pray today, it’s to that God that I pray. I pray, and I pray even more to Mary, because of the mother figure I feel from her. My faith and belief, I feel, sometimes strengthen me a lot. I’ve never been the luckiest of fellas in life, but every single time, I find God’s blessings upon me somehow.

However my faith isn’t enough on its own, so I recently decided to read more the bible and inspire myself more with the word. I also felt like I need also to get inspired through teachings, and doctrines of my church and there lies my main issue.

I feel like I’m part of those that aren’t worth being called christian or believer, I feel like i’m the worst of the human beings there is on the planet, and for few reasons, the first is I read a thread on sex before marriage, I was in a relationship for 5 years, the third year I had sex with the girl that I dated. I very much tried throughout my life to conform to word of God, my dad would really teach and talk to me for hours about abstinence before marriage, I was weak and through this same weakness, I got exposed to porn and masturbation, because my body and my mind couldn’t deal well with being active sexually, but most importantly I feel I was in love, and thought it would never end. I can’t justify it and don’t want to, but my very problem is this, why do people of faith usually make others feel like they aren’t worth a penny. I hear beautiful words coming from people near perfect. I read, from a guy, i’m 27, i waited. I read from a woman, marriages where people where already active sexually fails, with stats to justify it, and in my mind I go here we go again. Some of it, is anger at myself for not being able to withstand my weakness, but some of it also toward people that teach oh so perfect.

God knows my heart and God knows for every prayer, it goes out to him and in sincerity. God also knows my character, I’m not perfect. I try my best to live by the GOOD, because I believe in the GOOD. why isn’t this enough on its own. I’m not seeking my neighbors detriment. i’m not forging untrue stories about anything to anyone. When it so happens I cross those lines, I pray to God for my forgiveness, and I try never to repeat it. Why isn’t this a good enough base for catholicism??

And then I also feel very deranged at this by this phenomena. I read the Qu’ran in the past to find this answer, I engaged men of faith and I never get an adequate answer for this question?? If I was born of a different faith, or atheism, but in my life path, i at least went only on doing good, and being good and faithful to others, without attending church every sunday or know about abstinence, but still was thought enough morality, decency etc… why can’t I feel accepted among those of any faith. We say the non believers, the Muslims say the infidels. why so discriminatory for faiths that in someway or the other claim they preach unity tolerance and acceptance. Why those condemning eyes.

Why that picture that faith, or being of faith is so unattainable.

A lot of people feel they are not living the best Christian life possible. That can be a desire to improve.

When we sin, we need to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. That gives us strength to stay away from sin. It gives us the Sacramental forgiveness from God - washing our souls clean.

I’m sorry people of faith sometimes make you feel you are not worthy. When people share that they have avoided certain sins, do not let that bring you down. Use it to strenghten yourself from this day onward.

Continue loving God, trying your best to live loving God and neighbor, continue with the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Reconciliation. Know that none of us are perfect and God does not expect that we will be perfect. Trust in God that He will keep you on the path to Heaven.

God has saved us but He also wants to redeem us. Redeeming our bodies is a process. As long as a person doesn’t get caught up in “justifying” himself or their behavior, the process progresses quite quickly.

Anyhow, God is glorified by those who are holy their whole lives and He is also glorified by those who, like the prodigal son, return to Him after leaving Him, wasting the gifts He gave them, and come back humbled and willing to be restored.

It isn’t one way or the other. Some never abandon Him but then there are those who return and give Him great joy!

Be assured that God loves you infinitely, and that with Him all things are possible!

When we sin and repent He welcomes us back with open arms. The fact that you are here on this planet shows God’s love for you, and that He has a perfect plan for you.

David sinned, but because he repented the Saviour was eventually born of his line!

We are all sinners in need of Jesus and He is the healer of our souls. which is the greatest healing. (sometimes he heals our bodies too!) 🙂

Our Lord wants us to love all people with His Love, and do our best with His grace to tell others about Him. As I am sure you know, Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

It is good that you like Scripture study, as many Catholic churches have excellent studies where you can be with other people and a facilitator, complete with some homework, bible portions to read, workbook and DVD by Jeff Cavins. It is called The Great Adventure Bible Study, and there are many of them. It is good to be with others for discussion and inspiration.

May our Lord Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother be with you to fill all your needs.

Peace and Prayers,

Dorothy

Wasn’t it St. Padre Pio who said"Pray and don’t worry." So, pray! 🙂

God bless you.

Everyone is precious in the eyes of God and what He thinks of us is much more important than what anyone else thinks of us. I am sorry for your experiances and will pray for you.

I suggest you pray the Rosary–at least one decade each day for chastity and for a deepening of your faith.

Remember that some of the Church’s most famous saints were also infamous sinners! St. Augustine, a doctor of the Church, had a mistress and an illegitimate child. Other saints were murderers, thieves, prostitutes, etc. before they became saints.

Don’t assume just because people are speaking the truth of the Catholic Church and her teachings that they have lived up to it themselves. They may have avoided certain sins, but we ALL sin and we all damage ourselves and others. On the other hand, take someone like me. I will, without hesitation, point out the truth of the Church’s teaching on sexuality and the statistics that support it. Would you then assume that I have never engaged in premarital sex? If so, you would be wrong.

We all fall short of moral perfection; we are all sinners. But we do have a duty to reinforce the truth of our faith to one another and to proclaim it to the world. Even if we fail to live up to the standards we profess, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t profess them. Nor does it necessarily make us hypocrites, so long as we really believe that what we’re saying is true and are trying our best to align our lives to that truth.

Just remember that there is no sin that God can’t (or won’t) forgive, and there is no evil out of which God cannot bring a greater good. No matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been in life–take it from a major league sinner–God can bring great beauty from it. God bless you, friend.

“One of the brethren had sinned, and the priest told him to leave the community. So then Abbot Besarion got up and walked out with him, saying: I too am a sinner!”

“An Elder said: Do not judge a fornicator if you are chaste, for if you do, you too are violating the law as much as he is. For He who said thou shalt not fornicate also said thou shalt not judge.”

(From the Sayings of the Desert Fathers, 7th century AD)

The position of the Church SHOULD be not to judge - but this is a sin that many people (myself included) fall into every day. I don’t really have advice for what to do when you are confronted with people who judge you; maybe someone else can answer this question. Just try to remember that we’re all sinners. I believe it was St. John Chrysostom, one of the three Fathers of the Church, who wrote this prayer:

Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, into the
house of my soul; for it is desolate and fallen into ruins, and You have not in me a
fitting place to rest Your head; but since You desire to abide with me, I,
trusting in Your compassion, have come to You; bid the doors of my
unworthy lips to open, that I may be satisfied with You alone; enter into me,
and cleanse me from every bodily and spiritual defilement; be You my Helper
and Defender, and count me worthy to stand at Your right hand, through the
intercessions and supplications of our all; pure Lady the Theotokos and Ever-
Virgin Mary, with all the Saints’ who in their generation have been well
pleasing unto You, for Blessed are You to the ages of ages. Amen.

God has mercy. Christ has mercy and is not haughty, even if other people are.

Gently given correction can greatly help. There is a difference between judging and correcting.

Scripture does tell us to correct others. Discernment is needed as to when and how to correct others.

Don’t worry so much - we’re all sinners incapable of meriting the countless graces God bestows upon us.

Remember the Parable of the Lost Sheep - the Lord isn’t satisfied with 99/100 saved. One lost is too many. One lost is more than enough to cause Him to leave behind the 99 in the fold to recover the single stray. And no matter how disobedient or lost that one stray is there is no sin that exceeds the mercy of our Shepherd.

You have faith, you repent and clearly you want to do better. If you fall be like Christ and get up. Keep up your spiritual reading and pray often.

From my understanding, the main components of true faith are 1 making the effort of believing, which almost always brings us out of our comfort zone, and 2 making the effort to live in accordance with those beliefs. Success is not what is most important, what is important is true repentance – that you renounce your evil ways and turn towards the way preached by Christ.

In my understanding this is a continuous process. As human beings we pick up new evil ways very often without realizing it, so we have to always renew our repentance very often. In this way we can be good Christians. Jesus can see into our hearts, and he knows if we are making the best possible effort against sin, in avoiding it, and in repenting from it.

You seem to be doing this to a certain extent, but believing in Christ also means believing in His Church.

I noticed that you mention reading the Bible and praying (which are both very important and good!), but not participating in life of the Church, and that you also mention lacking strength to fight sin. If you are not receiving the sacrament of reconciliation, and not attending weekly mass, it seems likely that this could be weakening you a lot. There is no fix-all solution, but not attending mass and not going to confession can be sure ways of failing. I really feel that they give something essential to life. They give a truly supernatural strength that we cannot get on our own.

Have you been participating in the Sacramental life of the Church?

I’d be happy to talk about the second part of your question later.

Actually hell is quite public. since the road is wide that leads there, according to Jesus.
Uh, it was a joke. sanchopanza mentioned the parable of the lost sheep (which you will notice is my screen name.) Ha ha. 😛

For a long time my friend I lived as a christian (always catholic by baptism) however had my own way of living as a christian, engaging in sex with girlfriends and drinking etc.

Well upon my return to catholicism and reading many articles on here I felt that all the catholic rules are strict and sometimes miserable. But in fact, it is the opposite, every rule every doctrine has good reason you might just need time, like me, to shift your mind to accept it. It takes alot of thinking and meditation.

Sex before marriage is a sin. Its mentioned in the Bible as fornication, clearly a sin. No matter what denomination you are you know it is forbidden. And furthermore, there is scripture says that when you break one commandment it is like being guilty of them all. I believe that waiting is so much better, brings you so much closer to your partner in all areas, is so much more precious, and ultimately more passionate, intimate, pleasurable, giving etc. The opposite is all negative and can lead to greediness using your partner as a means to an end etc.

I am reading “Love and Responsbility” By Karol Wojtyla (pope john paul 2) its all about sex, chastity, sexual ethics, love etc. Its a great book and will transform your mind on the subject.

Christanity is strict but its so joyous too, god promises to forgive, cleanse, be there for us, protect us, bless us etc.

It sounds like you are on the right path and in my opinion you are much better than you may think, and im happy for you! god bless

Just one thing, you have Jesus on your side. He opened his heart up to you on the cross.
He is there whenever you need him or call upon him, especially in time of trouble.

What bothers Jesus the most is our lack of trust in his love for us. He is always forgiving and strengthening. Never doubt his love for you even tho sinning. He knows our weakness and hung on the cross to wipe it away. All he wants is for us to come to him and never doubt his love for us. What would trouble him the most is not having trust in his mercy and love.

Just a great thought that Jesus wants us to use often.

Since being severely injured in an auto accident a month ago, having my car totally destroyed, being unable to beg, borrow or steal a decent paying job for the last four years, and feeling thoroughly worthless in the Kingdom or out of it I have a great deal of trouble trusting that Jesus even gives a rat’s behind about me.

I understand, not in the same way as you do, but I understand.

Now I want you to do yourself a big favor.

Believe that he does love you in spite of it all. It is easy to love him when everything is going well. But that isn’t the test of love. Someone who really loves another does not give up hope or love if they truely love another. Love him anyway. You can even joke with him about it and tell him, “your just trying to get me not to like you, but your wrong again as usual.”

Don’t give up on him, because he won’t on you, even tho you might think he has.

Go to him and this time ask him with trust, real trust as if it is already been given.

Say things in a loving way to him even tho the sky is falling in.

Just some thoughts.
