Sometimes I like to be angry. Because I think it will stop evil spirit to get into my system and wreak havoc in it. What do you think?

If I feel bad people trying to get me, I get tense & feel like I wanna yell out to the top of my lung. It’s good, right?

Just heard this as a topic of discussion on Catholic radio. Anger is not a sin. Its an emotion, its what you do with that emotion that can be sinful. I was angry a lot when I was little because I grew up being teased constantly with practical jokes that just frustrated me. My parents thought it was funny to frustrate kids. It was relentless.

Ephesians 6:4
And you, fathers, provoke not your children to anger; but bring them up in the discipline and correction of the Lord.

Fr. Rutler says, use your temper, don’t lose your temper. If one is confronted with evil and feels no anger, it is evidence of apathy and perhaps sloth. Can one listen to the evening news and be unmoved?

Do you have a catechism? Anger is a passion that is morally neutral - BUT, it can be a vice which is a capital sin, or it can also have a good purpose. Prudential judgment must be employed here.
1765 There are many passions. The most fundamental passion is love, aroused by the attraction of the good. Love causes a desire for the absent good and the hope of obtaining it; this movement finds completion in the pleasure and joy of the good possessed. The apprehension of evil causes hatred, aversion, and fear of the impending evil; this movement ends in sadness at some present evil, or in the anger that resists it.
1866 Vices can be classified according to the virtues they oppose, or also be linked to the capital sins which Christian experience has distinguished, following St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great. They are called “capital” because they engender other sins, other vices.138 They are pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or acedia.
If you become angry when sensing that evil is around you, that is one thing and is morally permissible - within definite limits. However, to entertain anger on the chance that evil may arrive is simply anger for the sake of anger - that is very uncertain ground to stand on.

I would consult with a priest, who is a living, breathing counselor in such matters.

It matters more what you do with the anger than whether you get angry or not. Allowing anger to be an excuse to hurt others (whether they “deserve” it or not) or dwelling on one’s anger (even if justified) is not ok (and hurts you more than those with whom you might be angry). Anger that leads to actions to correct injustices/combat evil can be positive.

I have been told that is vengeance and the Lord has stated in His word that vengeance is His. To get even with someone, to right an injustice, you leave it to the Lord.

I’m a father who was accused of that and I admit it. I’m very sorry. I don’t live in my kids heads. I live in my head. And my head thought everyone was having fun. That made me blind to how my kids felt about it. Would you be OK with it occasionally if it wasn’t relentless? For example if I stopped when you said stop. Or do you prefer no teasing at all? Sometimes fathers do that because they’re trying to feel close to their kids. God Bless.

The purpose of anger is to resist injustice done to yourself or others. We have to be wise in its use. It’s not OK to let anger turn into rage for the sake of rage or bitterness and hatred for our enemies. Bitterness is unforgiveness. If we want to be forgiven we are required to forgive.

You hit the nail on the head. I get angry as well, when the Church of Christ is attacked from the outside and from the inside. I call it ‘justifiable’ anger. But…if you realize that the people attacking are blinded, some more than others, you are able to pray for them and forgive.

Thank you. I hate baby killing. The thought of it infuriates me. It goes against every protective instinct I have as a man. And for many years I let that anger make me bitter. God woke me up to that. The people who who do this or are otherwise OK with what’s going on, are our brothers and sisters. And we have to pray for them. The devil has them in utter darkness. God Bless.

Yep…that’s the way I see it too. It has helped me a lot to try to ‘understand’ that Satan has blinded them. I of all people should understand it, as for many years I bought into the ‘Cafeteria Style’ of our Catholicism promoted by some of our Priests and Bishops. I never went along with abortion…EVER, but went along with other heresies…ie…confession is out of date, missing Mass is NOT mortally sinful, etc. Thank the dear Lord He was merciful to me, because of a family crisis, I began praying the Rosary more regularly, and the Blessed Mother popped my eyes open WIDE! Those 15 promises are IN STONE!! 🙂 I started looking at ‘my’ views like: “Wow! What in the WORLD was I thinking?” She straightened me right out…we have to PRAY she does the same for our wayward thinking brothers and sisters! I learned to not only ‘discern’ what our Priests told us, but to take my questions to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Rosary is THE WEAPON of heresy and wayward Christian thinking, and the Catechism and Holy Scripture is our guide.

I do pray that all Catholic Christians will someday see that abortion is an intrinsic EVIL. NEVER EVER JUSTIFIED. I also pray that eyes will be opened to other heresies that are either promoted, or are allowed to remain ‘silent’ in the face of them. We are at WAR folks, both inside and outside of the Church.

And I forgot to add of course that our brothers and sisters are NOT the enemy. They are so precious in the Lord’s eyes, and should be in ours as well. SATAN is the real enemy behind the scenes. That’s who we’re really up against.

Love the sinner, hate the sin. Be angry over injustice (e.g. heresy, abortion, contraception), but keep your inner peace. Hate the state of the reprobate, but don’t lose your patience over him and pray for his conversion. Meekness is preferable to anger. We must do something about injustice, and not just get angry over it – we must make reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and pray the Rosary. God bless you.

Thank you again for your posts. I heard a talk last Friday about St John Paul II’s encyclical on the rosary. Between that and your post, I need to get off my duff and start praying it daily. Our sweet Mother asks repeatedly for us to do that, how can I keep refusing. God Bless.

Good anger stems from charity, bad anger does not. It is right to hate the devil, sin and the state of the reprobate, for God does. We must strive to be meek and patient with sinners who offend us and must keep far away as possible from bad company. God bless you.
