that is not correct. from 1835 to 1876 the Doctrine & Covenants section 101 stated that: “Inasmuch as this Church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication, and polygamy: we declare that we believe that one man should have one wife; and one woman but one husband, except in the case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again.”The section of the original D&C in question was written at a time when polygamy was not practiced. Read Jacob 2:30 in the Book of Mormon to see what the LDS doctrine about polygamy is, and always has been.
during that same time period polygamy was not only being practiced but being openly promoted as essential to exaltation. Jacob 2:30 prohibits polygamy and only an extreme twisting of its wording can justify situational polygamy. actual practice by the LDS church as well as the direction provided by LDs leadership in general conference during those times indicates an extreme contradiction with both of those scriptures. interestingly enough it is the later edition in which section 132 (still canonized today) that indicates that is an essential doctrine. this seemingly contradicts jacob 2 in that it establishes polygamy as the “rule” which was originally planned for man and will exist in the celestial kingdom. Jacob on the hand states monogamy as the rule and only through some creative interpretation allows a possible exception for the sole purpose of procreation.
the position of the LDs position on polygamy (as well as a number of other things) is one that changes.
