Actually it speaks volumes about the agenda of people that condemn magazine over one letter publiished six years ago. I’ve been a subscriber to the magazine for three years and have never run across anything that could even be considered close to homosexual bashing. I also don’t see how the letter you posted could lead to homosexual bashing or bullying in the workplace or anyplace else.

I am curious. Do you believe that homosexual behavior is a sin and cannot be condoned?
Do you have any evidence that The Oxford Review’s position has changed over this issue? Maybe they should revisit and review that letter written almost 6 years ago (does it matter if it was written 6,000 years or 6 seconds ago?). Then they should write a new article exploring the connections between the use and promotion of those derogatory terms and bullying in schools, homes and in workplaces. They should explain in the article why it’s wrong to use those words against homosexual persons. Why don’t you suggest it to them? This issue doesn’t have anything to do with believing or not in the sinfulness of homosexuality, it’s about why verbally abusing people should not be condoned, let alone promoted by the Editor of a magazine that proclaims to be orthodoxical and traditionally Roman Catholic.

Awww, here we go with the snivelling again. In WWII we called the Japenese “Japs” and the Germans “Krauts.” You want to revisit that too?

People get their feelings hurt too easy these days. When I was a kid, we used to say “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but names can never hurt me.” There’s a lot of wisdom in that

Does it really matter whether NOR scandalizes the faithful by being uncharitable toward those who sin, or if it promotes the faith by clearly pointing out sin where it exists - and trying to discourage it?

This thread was about good Catholic magazines. NOR has been submitted and seconded, move on.

The Editor of the New Oxford Review provides support and justification for verbal abuse against gays. That’s what calling them “fgs" or "f***ts” is. This is nothing short than promoting gay bashing, with its very likely consequences such as bullying in schools, in the workplace and everywhere you can think of. I don’t know how large is this magazine’s readership, but the fact that it seems to be functioning almost unchecked with this type of content, speaks volumes about the attitude of many of its readers and the kind of audience it’s attracting.
I’m an occasional NOR reader and I think your point is valid.

Mathew 5:22
But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Otherwise NOR has much food for thought that is lacking in the typical diocesan paper. Their feistiness isn’t for everyone. Sometimes it gets the better of them. Some folks only have to read one quote like this, and they’ll write it off. That’s fine. It just shows that even NOR needs to repent at times. In that they’re no different than anyone else. You could try writing a letter, but backing down hasn’t been their style. But they do have a new editor.

I dont think their thoughts on the issue were wrong in the fIrst palce.
