Good Friday crucifixions in Philippines
**DEVOTEES re-enacted Jesus’s crucifixion in gory scenes while millions of other less extreme faithful across the Catholic Philippines prayed with their families on Good Friday. ** A handful of people are traditionally nailed to crosses while hundreds more have their backs whipped until they bleed in Asia’s major Catholic outpost, to remember the day when Christians believe Jesus Christ died 2,000 years ago.

In the small farming town of Cutud, a couple of hours’ drive north of Manila, thousands of tourists gathered to watch what has over the years become the biggest and bloodiest Good Friday spectacle.

I’ve seen videos of this - the scenes disturbed me then and they still disturb me today…

Jesus asked us to pick up our own crosses and follow Him, (not to actually nail ourselves to one.)

These are extreme personal devotions. These are not endorsed by the CBCP, but these people do it out of their own devotion.

They’re actually outright discouraged. But no one’s apparently listening - I mean, what about the tourism revenue? 😃

True. I just hope those who continue to do this do so because of their devotion and not because of the money.

The Bishops are powerless over this because it doesn’t happen on Church property anyway. They can just voice their disagreement to it, nothing more.

My wife is from the Philippines. They have always and still do turn her stomach and mine…This is only mainly one area of the country that does this. Most people are not into stuff like this in the Phils.
