Annie, I truly sympathise with you. I was in a similar situation, as I wondered how I would ever find somebody.
Reading you original post, I see that you appear to have discovered one of life’s secrets; even those who seem decent are usually quite ‘undesirable’.
Let’s face it; the world is a terrible place. There is suffering in this world and it affects everybody. Unfortunately, some will desire marriage, but never see their desire fulfilled. I am not saying that this is your future. I simply want you to know that this is a possibility.

Please forgive me if I sound rather harsh, but I say these things only to help you.

Dwelling on your ‘loss’ will only lead to depressed feelings. We must live beyond this reality of ‘unfulfilled desire’. Think about Tolstoy’s character Prince Andrei Bolkonskiy. He lost his wife (Liz) and his future spouse (Natasha), betrayed him for a scandalous man (Kuragin). In short, his love life would have thrown most men into suicide. Yet, Bolkonskiy still found happiness and peace, all in the absence of romantic ‘satisfaction’.

I realise that you must be in a lull. I was in a similar state not too long ago. Just remember a few things. First, be grateful that you have been spared entanglement in the affairs of the world. In a way, you are above the other ‘fools’ who have surrendered to their desires.
Likewise, Annie, be grateful for your freedom. You can commit yourself to whatever you are driven to do. ‘Marry’ yourself to that cause, as long as it is a moral cause and does not counteract the faith. Also, remember that should you marry another person, your ambitions will probably be seconded to other commitments.
Finally, there is a good quotation from a film, ‘We’ll live till Monday’ (Доживём до понедельника); ‘Love is bad… keep your distance so as to not cry later.’

That quote should remind you that in a corrupted world like our own, the emotion of love can become a poison rather than a blessing. Keep your distance, work toward higher goals, and hold your head high.
Unfortunately, salvation is not frequently referred to ‘becoming like God’ (theosis). I think this imagery better conveys the reality of a virtuous existence.
Thus, from my understanding, should you rise above the ruins of ‘romantic exploits’, unfulfilled desires, and conformity to a broken society, you will be like God, tall and unhindered by this world.

I offer these words from my experience. However, consider that this disillusioned Slav still has much to learn.

Trident, you are such a sweet person. The cads should apologize for themselves! In any event, you are spot on with your assessment. Groups with young people like "Theology on “Tap” meet together to discuss the faith. There is usually a good representation of young people at these events. So, Annie, don’t give up. They are out there…I know because I married one.
Thanks Domer. I apologize because of the way I’ve acted in the past. I see myself sometimes in this. I mean I was never a cad. But I was pretty self-absorbed. And I know how guys can be. I just feel bad that people like Annie have to see that. Have to go there.

Glad you met a decent guy. I’m happy for that.

And it’s always nice talking with you. Thanks again for reaching out. It always gives me a bit of a boost when you do that. Hope your day’s a good one! 🙂

Well what are you doing to date good Catholic men? Where are you looking for them?

You need to ask yourself why you are picking these men over chaste ones.

To be fair, in real life people don’t come stamped on the forehead with “0% faithful Catholic,” “25% faithful Catholic,” “50% faithful Catholic,” “75% faithful Catholic,” etc.

You have to get to know people in order to figure out what kind of critter they are.

Right, and if it’s the kind of thing you ask about in the beginning stages, you’re going to scare away a lot of the good ones because it’s not appropriate at the very start.

Exactly.

From what I’ve heard, it can be very off-putting to know one is being examined as a possibly counterfeit or defective Catholic spouse product, rather than a unique and wonderful human being.

However, you can also learn a lot about someone through observation and the context in which you know someone. If you meet the person at daily mass, or at a Theology on Tap about sexual ethics, then there’s a pretty good chance they have at least most of the Catholic teachings under their belt.

Yes, that is what I was wondering. Maybe it isn’t even that they don’t want to be chaste, maybe they are scared off by the question being asked too soon.

Pardon my presumption, but why does an explicit question need to be asked? There are so many current affairs issues and new ideas/research that touch directly on issues of conscience. Opinions can be sussed out through discussions of news articles, events, interesting books, etc without ever personalizing the discussion. This kind of stuff forms the vast majority of what DH and I have always talked about.

So, rather than asking, “Are you looking to have premarital sex with me?” on date #2, talk about the presidential campaign, the success of various social programs or public policies, pro-life protesters who are wrongly imprisoned, contentious medical-ethical cases, you name it.

It doesn’t. There’s also nothing wrong with explicitly talking about it, especially where men are involved. Many of them don’t do well with hints. Some people are more direct. Too soon, though, is not good.

Also, I am not talking about saying “Are you looking to have premarital sex with me?” That’s really rude no matter how long you’ve known someone.

Fair enough, I included it more as a foil for laughs.

There’s a very good piece of advice from the blogger at SeraphicSingles/EdinburghHousewife where she counsels not mentioning virginity. Apparently, being too upfront about that tends to bring all the wolves out.

I’m really jaded about the whole dating scene out there. I’m am so tired of meeting guys who are really great and think I’m awesome until they find out I want to be chaste before marriage. Like seriously, I ain’t got time for that!
Of course. Ain’t got no time for that as a Catholic. Go look for guys who aren’t looking for a sexual relationship before marriage. Cast your net among practicing, orthodox, obedient Catholics who don’t make an exception for fornication.
Why is it so hard to find a guy that is Catholic who wants to be chaste before marriage?!
Because there aren’t many. But there aren’t many women who want that, either.
Like I am seeing a serious crisis of manliness in our society and it is extremely concerning. I really think I might be okay with living with cats the rest of my life.
Is that just about their inability to not fornicate or is there more to it?
I’m so so tired of guys just seeing me for my body or what they can get out of me.
In most cases it will involve at least a part of that, because people who can live without sex generally are meant to remain celibate as priests, nuns or otherwise. Hence, those who are left to marry tend to have their needs and be at least a little hot-blooded. It’s a matter of proportion.
Does anyone else have these same sentiments or can shed light on how to handle this obstacle?
  1. Yes.
  2. Pray.
Incidentally, your dry sense of humour and lively manner are quite endearing. Smart men will probably find them attractive. (Smart men are also more likely to have discovered something else in life than sex.)

If a man claims to be Catholic but doesn’t want to remain chaste before marriage, he’s not a practicing, believing Catholic in full communion with the Church. He’s culturally Catholic and not a guy you should be interested in. If you marry a guy like that he’ll refuse to use NFP and will likely violate other Church teachings on morals, and won’t share your essential theological beliefs. So wait for an actuallly Catholic man, we’re out there! chill out and pray about it

Thank you all for your encouraging words. I’m starting to think I will just have to wait until I can live near a larger catholic community. My Diocese really doesn’t have much of a young adult population. Until then, I foresee myself being single.

Yes, your chances of meeting nice men should be better then.

Good luck!
