"Good" Protestant Apologists

Beware of Dr. Kennedy I have listened to him for years. Yes, he’s a great orator but I have heard him misrepresent the Catholic faith a couple of times (St. Patrick not being a Catholic or a saint and his explaination of our belief in the Communion of Saints). I have come to the conclusion that he is either ignorant or prejudice of Catholics. You decide. If you think he is ignorant on certain Catholic issues then even more shame on him for not doing proper research before passing it on to his many listeners.
I have to say Amen to this post. There are many good pastors and preachers out there, when it comes to some, or even most things. But what they preach or teach that is good, still presumes what came out of Chirst’s church to begin with, including the canon of the NT, for example.

D James Kennedy’s Evangelism Explosion is among the big ministries, and pared down to it’s 5 points, we could concur, with a bit of tweaking, and with some re-understanding, if you will, in some areas; But then there are the “advanced” levels II and III.
How to witness to Muslims, and my favorite:
How to evangelize Catholics- so there you go.

This is a question of “perspective.” To find Protestant apologists who clearly express their beliefs is the goal. Most who have posted here have given me some new insights as to who to listen to and read. Thanks.🙂

My choices are Walter Martin, Josh McDowell and, of course, CS Lewis. None of these men strike me as anti-catholic. When the address the RCC they seem fair to me, and most important - they are not mean spirited.

Who are some “good” Catholic Apologists?

Great choices!

I like Jimmy Akin, Scott Hahn and Thomas Aquinas!

John Martignoni! 👍

C.S. Lewis is attractively free of the aggressive temper that seems to be one of the temptations of the apologist. He is very gracious in temper - & that may be one reason why Christians of very different churchmanships have been drawn to his writings. ##
C.S. Lewis was popular with Christians of all stripes since he focused on the core beliefs common to all Christians. I read that once someone asked him his opinion about some high church/low church debate. He refused to answer, saying that is usefulness derived from keeping clear of denominational squabbles.

He also said that that the conservatives of each denom had much in common with each other, and would be the best hope for Christian reunion- he said we’d never get there with the liberals.

Or, he also said, with Bible-only fundamentalists.

I haven’t seen any mention of Peter Kreeft yet. I may have missed it, but he is a brilliant apologist/ theologian/ philosopher. He is a great catholic thinker and a large reason why I am moving in the direction of the Catholic church. He is along the same lines as G.K Chesterton and C. S. Lewis. Check out Peter Kreeft’s podcasts or from his website at Peterkreeft.com. Particularly the episode on ecumenism. It’s brilliant!

Peace in Christ,
Justin

All-Stars of Apologetics. 👍

RC Sproul, Ravi Zacharias, Walter Martin, Josh McDowell, John MacArthur, Albert Mohler, Allistair Begg, Lee Strobel, Greg Bahnsen, James White, James Kennedy, Hank Hanegraaff, …:clapping:
John MacArthur? Isn’t he the one that claims that the Vatican library has a large collection of pornography without looking at any evidence to see whether or not it is true?

Check out his claim here:

You read the article and found THAT the only objection?

Ummm, maybe the vatican got rid of it, or just plain lied? Why would porn be out of character with the debauchery of the middle ages clergy?

FYI, I’d add D. James Kennedy to my list…but I have a hard time with “great” so I’ll call him “almost great” 🙂
Can’t agree here! Kennedy is one of the worst anti-Catholics around. To be fair, his branch of Presbyterianism is pretty anti-Catholic, due more, I think, to their understanding of Calvinism than anything else.

Certainly, that is not my only objection, but I think the example is a good illustration of the hazards of sloppy research. John MacArthur makes an allegation but he didn’t bother to do any research to see if his research is true. At best, he is a sloppy researcher, at worst he is bearing false witness. Now my question to you is, why should I admire someone who is either a sloppy researcher or a liar?

This comment is just way too priceless to pass up. Is this just pure speculation on your part, or do you have any actual evidence to back up what you say? If you have evidence, I would love to see it.

Is this the best you can come up with in defending your friend?

I would like to add ,

Elwood McQuaid
Renald Showers
Richard D. Emmons
and David Levy

They all write for a magazine call “Israel My Glory”

On what subject? Even Catholic historians know the debts of debauchery that occured in the medieval church. Porn is tame compared to the past abuse and sin.
