Tech giant Google has introduced a new feature that allows businesses to mark themselves as black-owned on its Maps and Search products as part of its stated effort to support the black community. Google has not stated if it will examine applicants for the badge to ensure the companies truly have black ownership.

I thought Google already knows everything about everyone and controls at least half the world.

I’m pretty sure a person with such intentions could find black owned businesses whether it is through Google, Yelp, or something else. Currently there are list of black owned businesses hosted elsewhere that could be found. My expectation is that most people are not going to act with such intentions. I think this information will be innocuous at worst and helpful to some.
