Yeah, I have gotten alot of gibberish too. They got
Salve Regina, Ave Maria, Pater Noster, Oremus Pro Pontifice, and Ora Pro Nobis they got right.

Why’s that?
It is stable, predictable, unchanged for centuries and has been translated so often by so many scholars that there are unlimited resources against which to check the Google translation algorithm. In essence, there is no excuse for getting it so wrong, I’m saying I got gibberish not a clause slightly off or a word out of place. Conversation is prone to grammatical errors that could understandably confuse a translator.

“No excuse for getting it wrong,” huh? Sounds like you should ask for your money back and just stick with doing your own translations of such “simple,” “predictable” prose. 😉

it’s still in alpha, so that should be expected. I’m surprised they made it public.

Take a look at Fr. Z’s blog. He compares the Google Translator with some of the old ICEL translations. I find it both funny and sad that the Google translations come out on top. Thank goodness for the new upcoming translation. 🙂

I don’t know if it’s fair to call Google a translator since it’s more of a search device for possible already-done translations. This is more obvious as letters are typed in and the order changed to fit the dynamic text up to that point.

Some of the blog comments are rich, as well. For example: “The problem with the ICEL is that half of them don’t know English, and the other half don’t know Latin.”
