[Lynn] Swann, a commentator for ABC Sports, is much more than a potentially strong contender for [Pennsylvania] governor in 2006. He is, they hope, part of a new crop of prominent black candidates who could help the Republicans crack, if not break, Democratic domination among black voters in several important states.
…
Republicans still face an uphill battle with black voters. Surveys of voters leaving their polling place show that Mr. Bush won 11 percent of the black vote in 2004. And although that was three percentage points better than his black support in 2000, it was no better than the average for Republican presidential candidates since 1964, which was 11.7 percent. (Mr. Bush polled better than that average among black voters in several swing states, including Florida, Michigan and Ohio last year.)
Republicans assert that their focus on private ownership, social conservatism and school vouchers appeals to blacks, but polls suggest that those issues are not enough to overcome historic mistrust of the party.
…
In a countermove, Democrats are planning to run a modest number of white Christians.Republican strategists say the party does not have to win a large chunk of the black vote to achieve success. Expanding the party’s support by a few percentage points in both presidential and statewide races could be devastating to the Democratic Party in swing states like Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, they say.
