Gov. Bentley cutting off state funding to Planned Parenthood

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley announced Thursday afternoon he is terminating all state funding to Planned Parenthood.

Bentley sent a letter to Planned Parenthood Southeast CEO Staci Fox informing her of the decision to end the agreement between Alabama Medicaid and Planned Parenthood Southeast Thursday. The termination will go into effect in 15 days.

According to the letter, Planned Parenthood Southeast can request a hearing with Alabama Medicaid.

Unfortunately, many states require all funding (and removal of funding) by the state legislatures. And a large percentage of state legislatures are part-time, meeting only for a couple months each year. For example, in NM (where I currently live), the state legislature only meets for two months in odd years and one month in even years. Other than that, it requires the governor to request a special session. As we’ve already had a special session this year to deal with budget issues, it’s probably not going to happen.

Plus, Gov. Martinez seems more obsessed with repealing a law that allows undocumented immigrants to have driver’s licenses than anything else (she’s pushed for this for 5 straight years and has come up snake eyes every year).

The sad part about this is that by the time the legislatures reopen for next year, this deal with PP selling baby parts will have been pushed to the back burner by all but the most avid of pro-life advocates. And PP knows that. It’s how they’re able to keep their reputation high among the general public (even a substantial number of pro-lifers support PP in everything except abortions!). That’s the 24/7 news cycle for you. Seriously.
