Hi coleraine,

Each sacrament is complete in itself. It does what it is supposed to do and needs no other sacrament.

Missing mass is a grave matter that ought to be considered.

Otherwise, you could be right back in the same boat.

How is it that you will miss mass for two weeks?

what i mean is that i will be able to go on the second weekend, not skip two weekends. i have to go to my dads. oh, and i know that it is not good to miss mass, but like lying, it is no-longer a mortal sin.

No, it not like lying. Your Sunday mass attendance is a serious matter.

i wanst saying that it was like lying, i was just using lying as a comparison, because i dont want to claim what i cant back up. look, its not a mortal sin to miss mass. i know while it is a serious part of catholicsim, it is not a mortal sin for a 14 year old to miss mass because he has to go to his dads. i go when i can.

For most people who can get to mass with a little effort, missing mass is a mortal sin. Only in extreme circumstances is missing mass not a sin. For a 14 yr old who is dependent on a parent who won’t take them, this could be an extreme circumstance.

Let’s be careful when saying “it’s a mortal sin to miss Mass”. It is a grave sin to miss Mass unless one has good reason. To be a mortal sin, the sin has to have full knowledge and full consent. We cannot assume that when one misses Mass that they have full knowledge on the matter (I say this because catechisis in the Church has been pretty bad in this area). Therefore, we shouldn’t assume that it is a mortal sin for everyone.

As to the original post, you need to do your penance, but there is no need to receive the Eucharist to “complete” your reconcilliation. In fact, if you don’t know it already, there is no requirement to receive the Eucharist but once a year preferably at Easter. But Mass attendance is still required whether you receive or not. (Of course, why one would not receive when in a state of Grace is beyond me, but I wanted to let you know it is not required by the Church except once a year)

Traditions don’t get you into heaven, period. Have faith in Christ and you will be justified and forgiven in God’s eyes…

If you believe traditions get you into heaven you don’t know Christ, or atleast in the proper sense… Christ died for your sins did he not? Well… Romans 4:2-5 “For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory, but not before God. For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh, is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believes on him that justifies the ungodly; his faith is counted for righteousness.”

Traditions can also be considered works in an almost exact sense- And works as you could note in that passage don’t bring you glory, but simply puts God in debt so that he owes you something… and even so, no amount of good works will get you into heaven, that means traditions as well… the Eucharist is a tradition and so is confessing to one another, as well as attending mass 😉 … so obviously none of those do you any good towards getting to heaven.

Also… Romans 5:9 “Much more then being now justified by his(Jesus’) blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him (Jesus).”

In my religion we don’t even have mass, and therefore it isn’t considered sin at all for us… being as we base our religion on God’s Word and Christ, it would seem odd for us never to mention something that was commanded out of God’s Word, but that’s exactly my point, the mass isn’t even hinted at inside of the Bible, and therefore relating sin with attending mass is nonsensual.

Romans 4,

Welcome to the forums. Hopefully you will find it a enjoyable and edifying experience – good people and good conversation. 👍

I would like to ask you if you would reconsider your above post, and either modify it or perhaps delete it altogether. As a Christian gentleman (or gentle-lady), it seems a bit unbecoming of you to suggest that the above 14 year old(!) poster does not know Christ. He (or she) asked a Catholic question on a Catholic board, of a very serious nature. I don’t think now is the time for your point. It seems somewhat predatory.

Please consider an edit.

Welcome to the forums again.

We Catholics still follow the 10 commandments, a necessary tradition as far as I’m concerned. We Catholics indeed have a sacred obligation to attend Mass. Remember that the Third Commandment states, “Keep Holy the Sabbath.” For the Jewish people, the Old Testament Sabbath was on Saturday, marking the “day of rest” after creation. For Christians, we have always kept holy Sunday, the day of the resurrection.

Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit grave sin, and grave sin is indeed mortal sin. Serious circumstances arise which excuse a person from attending Mass, like being sick and blizzards etc. . . When a person negligently “bags Mass,” to go shopping, catch-up on work, sleep a few extra hours, attend a social event, or not interrupt vacation, the person is allowing something to take the place of God.

Yes, such behavior really is turning one’s back on the Lord and committing a mortal sin. God must come first in our lives. On Sunday, our primary duty is to worship God at Mass as a Church and to be nourished with His grace.

Peace,

Ryan 🙂

Really? The I suppose that you reject the very tradition that is the only real source that tells us authoritatively what books of the Bible are inspired canon, since you cannot define the inspiration of any particular book of the Bible as inspired from within its own pages.🤷
If you believe traditions get you into heaven you don’t know Christ, or atleast in the proper sense…
Where does the Catholic Church teach ans such thing? It doesn’t… that’s where 🙂
Christ died for your sins did he not?
You won’t find a faithful Catholic who will argue that…
Well… Romans 4:2-5 “For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory, but not before God. For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh, is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believes on him that justifies the ungodly; his faith is counted for righteousness.”
As a faithful Catholic I can resoundingly say AMEN! & ALLELUIA! I believe every word of what that verse says! I just do not believe your very fallibly human interpretation of it.
Traditions can also be considered works in an almost exact sense- And works as you could note in that passage don’t bring you glory, but simply puts God in debt so that he owes you something… and even so, no amount of good works will get you into heaven, that means traditions as well…
Really? So all the times that Our Lord and the apostles and the New Testament writers make clear references to traditional teachings and documents they were working their way into heaven?
Infallibility & How The Apostles Taught the Study of Sacred Tradition.
the Eucharist is a tradition
Really? I disagree, as does the word of God. The Eucharist IS Scriptural
and so is confessing to one another,
Again the Word of God and I disagree. Catholic Confession
as well as attending mass
Really? Not according to Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking our assembly, as some are accustomed; but comforting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching.
… so obviously none of those do you any good towards getting to heaven.
better start rewriting the word of God then I guess. 🤷 But please forgive me if I don’t purchase it or even accept it if you give me a copy.
(Cont’d)

Also… Romans 5:9 “Much more then being now justified by his(Jesus’) blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him (Jesus).”
Gee! We seem to already know and practice that.
1 Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins.
2 Mark 14:24 And he said to them: This is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many.
3 Luke 22 :20 In like manner the chalice also, after he had supped, saying: This is the chalice, the new testament in myblood, which shall be shed for you. **
4** 1st Corinthians 11:25 In like manner also the chalice, after he had supped, saying: This chalice is the new testament in myblood: this do ye, as often as you shall drink, for the commemoration of me.
5 Hebrews 9:20 Saying: This is the blood of the testament, which God hath enjoined unto you. **
6** John 6:56 For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed.
In my religion we don’t even have mass,
Your loss and error, as the Word of God shows.
and therefore it isn’t considered sin at all for us… being as we base our religion on God’s Word and Christ, it would seem odd for us never to mention something that was commanded out of God’s Word, but that’s exactly my point, the mass isn’t even hinted at inside of the Bible,
and therefore relating sin with attending mass is nonsensual.Really? Then you must have believed another gospel then since the New Testament is full of the Mass (1st Corinthians 10:16-17 and 11:23-30 as well as other scriptures as well as the writings of the early church.

I came from years of those errors. I won’t embrace a modern gospel that is in error. My Testimony

Coleraine, I dont know who told you it is not a mortal sin, but it is wrong teaching. Missing Mass (apart from legitimate reasons) on Sunday is always sin. It is the breaking of the third commandment. But more than this, we miss being with the Lord and receiving Him and Him being in our hearts. We miss the food for the journey to heaven.

For goodness sake where do all these evangelicals come from? dont they have a forum of their own? Must every evangelical find his/her way to a catholic discussion board? What is it with them. This is the second Catholic discussion forum I have been on where evangelicals with their nonsense invade. Please moderators.!!!:banghead:

Hi GA!
Good to see you around again!

Don’t sweat it. In the long run people like Romans 4 offer us an opportunity to read their beliefs here and respond with the truth.
The Forum Rules and Banned Topics are pretty specific and so long as a person is reasonable, charitable and respectful of us and our most holy faith then I have no problems with them posting like this.

Having spent many years among various n-Cs I know very well that most of them consider this their version of “witnessing” to us Catholics.

Personally, I maintain a policy that if you witness to me, I reserve the right to offer my Catholic counter witness, which as many have seen, will ultimately challenge the person to give very serious consideration to converting to the Catholic faith. 🙂

CM,

I am perplexed by it. It seems somewhat opportunistic, and like I said above, almost predatory. I’ve also seen my fair share of what looks like a non-Catholic Christian purposefully of knowingly distorting the truth or historical facts in order to “win” a convert.

Do you know what I mean? Did you ever resort to such seemingly cut-throat tactics when you were a non-Catholic?

Hello CM,
It sounds like its OK for you that we are their “mission field” I resent this because I come to this board because I like to hear and speak and be with other Catholic minded individuals. I am a bit tired (having listened for several years on another board the rantings of rabidly anti catholic evangelicals) and thought that this being Catholic Answers and Peter Kreeft at the helm there would be more “catholic” than anything else.
Anyway, I will be away for a week (in Rome) so I wont be able to answer but if you post for me will reply on return.
Good night and God Bless

They really don’t know any better at all. Most of them have been wrongly taught about Catholicism. I can assure you that they will never learn it on their own forum! All that will happen is that their erroneous thinking will be reinforced. I think that persons such as this are part of the reason for having the forum. Pray for them! 👍

As a person who spent a long time lapsed an in Protestant communities, I think you are right, it is opportunistic. Evangelicals are taught to “be instant, in season and out of season” ie; don’t miss a single opportunity to share the gospel

Evangelicals see themselves preying upon the devil, and pushing back his turf. Many have been erroneously taught that the Roman Catholic Church is part of that turf.
I’ve also seen my fair share of what looks like a non-Catholic Christian purposefully of knowingly distorting the truth or historical facts in order to “win” a convert.
The vast majority of distortions, though, are done in ignorance. Most evangelicals have never studied any church history.
Do you know what I mean? Did you ever resort to such seemingly cut-throat tactics when you were a non-Catholic?

Absolutely! Gotta get those poor souls out of that “whore of babylon”. God have mercy. :o

I know what you mean. You will find that most of them are on the Apologetcs fora, though, and if you wish to avoid them, you can find refuge in the Spirituality and Christian living fora.
