Groundbreaking series on Catholicism to air on PBS this fall

I just saw the documentary. It is so well done and Fr. Barron is the perfect narrator. One thing that surprises me is the mention of Thomas Merton (one of my heroes many years ago). Am I mistaken that he is not in favor with the Church? And I wish, among the other liturgies shown they had included the extraordinary beauty of the Traditional Latin Mass. There are many of us who still love it and I understand it is becoming more popular again, hopefully. It is and has been such a huge part of the Church, and a wonderful liturgy for those who have “fallen in love with God”
 
I am not an expert on Thomas Merton, but I would like to point out that Tertullian helped the Church very much in the early days and is still held up for the good things he said, in spite of the fact that he did become a heretic later on.
 
When will it show in the New York area?
We have our fair share of Catholics:D
 
PBS will be showing the programs if they have been accepted in each particular area. Sadly, they will not be shown in my area - I live in the Bible belt,…there is a very low percentage of Catholics here.
 
Father Barron was on an EWTN show and the host stated that EWTN will be airing some of the shows in November. I don’t know if it will be all 10 episodes though.

MPT played it twice last Thursday. I set my tape (yes…tape) for the midnight to 2 am rebroadcast. They are doing the same tomorrow night.
 
not playing in my area at all. And my aunt and uncle in western part of the state wouldn’t be able to watch either, since their cable company decided to conveniently move EWTN to a digital tier that she and my uncle do not pay for.

Oh well, I am surprised PBS would air this…they aren’t exactly pro religion.

Can you get any of the Alabama Public TV stations? They will be carrying the series, beginning this week, I believe. (I’m about an hour or so west of your area…)

I like Father Barron. I heard him speak at the Living the Faith Catholic Conference, last March. He was the last speaker on the final second day. A few of us really enjoyed his talk, but a lot people were very lukewarm about him, and his talk.

They were screening a full episode of Catholicism at the end of his talk. My group didn’t stay—too tired after 2 full days of the conference. 😦 Majority ruled.

Sounds to me like some of the “lukewarm” people looking for “in your face” factors could use Fr Barron’s insight almost as much as some people outside the Church.

The first 30 seconds of the series presents Jesus as an all or nothing figure, if you need more in your face than that, I’d guess you’ve missed the point.

That was my first reaction when I read the title of the thread. I remember that controversy all too well. That “documentary” was also considered “groundbreaking” (to some).

I hope the new series is different, and will try to catch it locally.
