What a bunch of dribble. If he means that those of us, whether twentysomething, thirtysomething or even (barely) fiftysomething, are taking what Vatican II really said, know our faith & are willing to stand up prophetically for the orthodox teachings of Catholic Church & defend the Pope, then may the Lord bless the Church with a whole swarm of us. Another thing that drives him nuts, is when we are able to cite our sources and back them up. The Catechism and the Vatican website to Mr. Nixon is a hinderance and I think he real colors are showing. Eventually he’ll have to realize and many liberal Catholics as well, that when they encounter the real spirit of Vatican II, the Holy Spirit, it will dawn on them that their credentials just don’t add up. May God help him. Sounds like certain lukewarm Catholics like Mr. Nixon on commonwealmagazine are getting really, really, nervous.

I am sorry Bones, but I don’t understand what you are objecting to in the article. Having practiced Catholicism both pre VII and then fell away and came back post VII, I think most of the observations are not “dribble”. Can you be more specific in your objections?

He says, “Many of my fellow parishioners are old enough to remember the last time a generation of ecclesiastical Jacobins descended upon them and I think most would prefer not to repeat the experience.” Sounds like an attack on the Jacobins that are actually encouraged by Rome.

Just look at Redeptoris Sacramentum if you don’t believe me.
  1. In an altogether particular manner, let everyone do all that is in their power to ensure that the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist will be protected from any and every irreverence or distortion and that all abuses be thoroughly corrected. This is a most serious duty incumbent upon each and every one, and all are bound to carry it out without any favoritism.
  2. Any Catholic, whether priest or deacon or lay member of Christ’s faithful, has the right to lodge a complaint regarding a liturgical abuse to the diocesan Bishop or the competent Ordinary equivalent to him in law, or to the Apostolic See on account of the primacy of the Roman Pontiff. It is fitting, however, insofar as possible, that the report or complaint be submitted first to the diocesan Bishop. This is naturally to be done in truth and charity.
Oh that’s right, Mr. Nixon hasn’t even read the document.

If anything, it sounds like Mr. Nixon is opposed to this “sensibility” more than anyone, since he wants to exclude the newly baptized and received from having any intelligent (name removed by moderator)ut in the Church until they’ve absorbed the nuances that he and his ilk have spent a generation adding to the Conciliar and Papal texts.

Canon 17 states that “ecclesiastical laws are to be understood according to the proper meaning of the words considered in their text and context. If the meaning remains doubtful or obscure, there must be recourse to parallel places, if there be any, to the purpose and circumstances of the law, and to the mind of the legislator.” It seems to me that, while the role of experts should not be minimized, it seems apparent that someone with a minimum amount of understanding and a basic vocabulary (preferably in Latin) can just as easily parse the meaning of a document as someone with multiple degrees in theology and certificates of attendance from the last 20 Call to Action Conferences. If the interpretation given by a beginner is incorrect, it’s the role of the expert to point out how and where it’s incorrect - not to disparage the right of the beginner to interpret.
