Sorry, I wouldn’t necessarily feel safe.
Death, Jim, is not subjective but objective.

Would you go to those who lost children at Virginia Tech and say, “I’m sorry your chidren are dead, but it makes me feel better?”.

goofyjim;2240360Someone who has the gun may decide he doesn’t like the way I walk down the street and use it on me. Of course said:
We can objectively demonstrate that no matter how you feel, the reality is different. Shall-issue laws reduce violent crime.

Perhaps you are not entrusted with the lives of others then?
No I am not but I would still not be required to carry a gun or any other means of defense. Stop the pontificating folks. It’s my decision.

Let us declare a mutual truce, then. We will not attack your decision and your right to it, and you will not attack ours.

I believe in a certain type of “gun control.” I use both hands to steady the gun as I fire! 😃

A friend of ours, Jenny, has 5 children and lives in a horrible neighborhood near us. Her husband is serving in Iraq. 3 weeks ago, while she and the children were home in the evening, a burglar entered through a basement window. She called the police as soon as she heard the glass break.

The dispatcher asked her if she owned a gun and knew how to use it, and she said yes. The dispatcher told her that an officer would be there in 5 minutes (which might be too late) and she was advised to fire a warning shot down the stairs, which she did. The burglar quickly fled.

I believe in mercy, but not to a ridiculous extent. If someone breaks into my house, I will protect my family - and unfortunately for the burglar I probably won’t be firing any “warning shots” if you catch my drift. If it’s somehow wrong to protect my family (??!! ) I’ll make sure to go to confession as soon as possible.

And if it’s somehow wrong to not have a gun in the home to protect the family, I’ll go to confession also. But I doubt either one of us has to go. It’s a personal decision.

I thought we were calling a truce. I’m sticking around if my views continue to get attacked.

Maybe I don’t understand how your views just got attacked.

tomch made a post, he never referenced your posts or opinions. He simply told his story. Nothing more.

Where is the attack of your views?

I am still awaiting for your apology for post #45. It seemed a little immature and inappropriate.

I simply offered an alternative suggestion of a way to defend yourself in that post, nothing more, nothing less. You seem to have done read way too much into it. But you now replying in this way is typical of the way you have been changing the topic whenever you are asked a specific question.

I have asked for evidence on several things you have stated and not backed up. The most recent question I just asked you is also unanswered, so I will ask again. How is it that your views were attacked by tomch when he never mentioned anything you wrote, and when he only relayed his story?

That post was not a suggestion on how to defend myself. I am leaving this thread because it is all one sided. If there is no room for debate then the thread should never be started.

I am hereby modifying my stance on gun control… I think we should limit the firearm rights to the following 7 categories of people:
  1. People who think this thread is one-sided.
  2. People who don’t like my true story, which I think is fantastic.
  3. People who leave this thread.
  4. People who think this thread should have never been started.
  5. Goofy people, or people who have names that include the prefix “goofy”.
  6. Anyone who is a smart-alek. (Oops…) 😃
  7. People who break into my house and get shot by me.
😃

I won’t break into your house. I am not a smart alek, I have every right to a screen name I choose. There either is gun control or there isn’t. I simply have debated aginst the requirement of self defense. How am I to blame for my death if someone shoots me and I was not carrying protection? Logic escapes me so I see no grievous sin in not owning a gun whether I have a family or not.

I’m joking around with you! Lighten up, man! BTW… I’m the one who’s being a smart-alek, not you.

I think it’s fine for anyone to not own a gun if they feel that way. I live in a dangerous area, and feel that it’s important to own one for protection, but I certainly understand that many don’t agree with me.

And by the way, I like your goofy screen name. It has more character than mine.

I don’t even understand the last part about “blame” so I’ll just leave that alone.

Sorry, bro. There are some in this thread that have personally challenged my standing as a Catholic because of my political view on this issue. I simply feel I must follow my conscience.

Well, if anyone ever questions another’s standing as a Catholic simply because of your view on gun control, I think they should be taken behind the woodshed and shot. 😃

Don’t you love this thread? I don’t think I’m ever going to leave. 🙂

OK take me out back and shoot me. But I did not challenge his Catholic status for any political belief. I did question how someone can claim to be a Catholic and go against the word of the Vatican. Sort of like how can someone be Catholic and Pro-Abortion. The two are mutually exclusive. It has nothing to do with politics.

The Vatican, and the Catechism of the Church, both indicate that we have a duty to defend our own lives and the lives of those around us. The Vatican recognizes that guns are one way to do that. It does not say guns are the exclusive way to defend yourself. It does not mandate guns. Nobody in this thread (at least none I saw) said anyone had to have a gun to be a Catholic. But just because you don’t have a gun does not absolve you of your duty to defend your life in some way.

However, the predominant anti-gun position in this thread is that NO GUNS SHOULD BE ALLOWED. The predominant pro-gun position in this thread is that GUNS SHOULD BE A CHOICE people have and should not be banned, the Vatican supports this position (evidence was provided earlier today).

Well, melensdad and goofyjim, I think that the only way to resolve this disagreement is to have a duel. 🙂

He’ll win. I won’t carry a gun to defend myself from his.😃
Of course, I have no belief that that would wind me up in hell. The document he mentions just does not carry the same weight as, say, Church teaching on abortion or gay marriage or a host of other things. There are some things we can respectfully disgree with the Vatican on and not risk the fires of hell.
