Cherry picking? I am summarizing and getting to the meat of the matter – which is that the church IS IN FAVOR of the private possession of firearms.

Who ever made the actual statement, they WERE SPEAKING FOR the Church. Nowhere did the church denouce those statements.

And as far as it being several years old … until other statements from the Holy See are made to the contrary (and as of yet, no such statements were made) these statments still stand and still represent the OFFICIAL position of the church on this matter.

So then you’ll join me in denouncing your statement below and from now on will correct the gun community when they falsely attribute this to our Pope, right?
There is NO twisting. The Pope clearly said that

The Pope did specifically say this on the subject

Encyclical EVANGELIUM VITAE
“…legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for someone responsible for another’s life, the common good of the family or of the State. Unfortunately, it happens that the need to render the aggressor incapable of causing harm sometimes involves taking his life. In this case, the fatal outcome is attributable to the aggressor whose actions brought it about, even though he may not be morally responsible because of a lack of the use of reason.”
Defense of the family remains a grave duty, and any action that renders an attacker incapable of harm (incuding those that involve the taking of the aggressors life) bring no moral responsiblity upon the attacker.

In fact, NEGLECTING the duty of defense would be a moral wrong.

Denounce it? Of course not! I will, however, no longer incorrectly attribute it to the Pope. It should, instead, be properly attributed to the Church (the church which the Son of God established and which Christ promised would be free of error since it is the “fountain of truth”) as it’s OFFICIAL position. And, that OFFICIAL postion STILL remains …

In a world marked by evil, the right of legitimate defence by means of arms exists. This right can become a serious duty for those who are responsible for the lives of others, for the common good of the family or of the civil community.
