Gun ownership in this day and age

Well the Catholic Bible literally says “thou shall not kill”. Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

My opinion is irrelevant, the Bible says what it says regardless of what I think.
No, your understanding of what you are reading is flawed.
The Church teaches us otherwise.

Cut and dry rarely is.
You should consult the catechism and your priest.

You said that teachers packing heat would be afraid of teachers who don’t have guns?

The Church says it’s a good translation.

If you don’t disagree with it, then why are you trying to say it doesn’t say what it literally says?

He’s been told the same thing repeatedly on this thread. He told me I was “promoting gun violence online” for saying that self defense is justified. He just told someone that they are “eager to say killing is OK”. Best to just not feed the troll.

How else would I read “thou shall not kill” other than as it literally reads? Should I pretend it doesn’t say what it says?

Why are you so eager to say that killing is okay?
killing is not ok, self-defense is, but you know that
What happened to respecting the sanctity of life?

Evangelium Vitae, Encyclical of Pope St. John Paul II, 1995 A.D.

  1. This should not cause surprise: to kill a human being, in whom the image of God is present, is a particularly serious sin. Only God is the master of life! Yet from the beginning, faced with the many and often tragic cases which occur in the life of individuals and society, Christian reflection has sought a fuller and deeper understanding of what God’s commandment prohibits and prescribes. 43 There are in fact situations in which values proposed by God’s Law seem to involve a genuine paradox. This happens for example in the case of legitimate defence, in which the right to protect one’s own life and the duty not to harm someone else’s life are difficult to reconcile in practice. Certainly, the intrinsic value of life and the duty to love oneself no less than others are the basis of a true right to self-defence. The demanding commandment of love of neighbour, set forth in the Old Testament and confirmed by Jesus, itself presupposes love of oneself as the basis of comparison: "You shall love your neighbour as yourself " (Mk 12:31). Consequently, no one can renounce the right to self-defence out of lack of love for life or for self. This can only be done in virtue of a heroic love which deepens and transfigures the love of self into a radical self-offering, according to the spirit of the Gospel Beatitudes (cf. Mt 5:38-40). The sublime example of this self-offering is the Lord Jesus himself.
Moreover, “legitimate defence can be not only a right but a grave duty for someone responsible for another’s life, the common good of the family or of the State”.44 Unfortunately it happens that the need to render the aggressor incapable of causing harm sometimes involves taking his life. In this case, the fatal outcome is attributable to the aggressor whose action brought it about, even though he may not be morally responsible because of a lack of the use of reason. 45

How am I the troll for being against gun violence?

You all are the ones who want a shooting to happen so badly so you can show off your Call of Duty and gun range skills, not me.

What kind of Catholic brags about his guns?

I am going to retire for the night. I hope any teachers here will consider the importance of taking training and arming themselves accordingly. Yes its a HUGE responsibility, but you people are on the frontlines, and if you can put down an active shooter you could potentially save 10, 20, 30 or more lives. The police want to help, but unless you have a school liaison officer on scene it won’t matter. I know some of you may be terrified of guns, but this fear can be overcome by familiarity through training. Innocent lives are at stake.

I find it absolutely disturbing that people out there want more guns in schools.

Suicidal mass shooters want to die. More guns isn’t going to prevent a shooting.

Guns are used defensively thousands of times every year, though most instances don’t involve shots being fired. Estimates are anywhere from 500,000 to 3 million times per year in the U.S.
Installing entry security, domestic cctv or alarms has prevented millions maybe billions of breaches of defense also. We can play the hypotheticals all day long.

The past: School
The present: Prison

What happened to schools being for learning?

So I should pretend that it doesn’t say “thou shall not kill” even though it literally says that?

Why trying so hard to gaslight me?

I’m going to respond to you one last time. You have some nerve accusing anyone here of wanting a shooting to happen so badly… What an awful thing to say to fellow Catholics. I’ve carried a weapon for most of the last 25 years while serving in the military. I’m retired now, but still do carry a gun at times, legally. Over that time I’ve prayed every day that I wouldn’t have to use it, but that if I did that I would be able to protect innocent life. Sorry you think all gun owners or gun rights proponents are bloodthirsty psychopaths, because it’s simply not true. Have a good evening.

Why not try to prevent gun violence from happening before it happens?

Why wait until it happens to jump into action?
