And they have a significantly lower portion population too. What matters is murder rate per capita and violent crimes per capita. Those show percentages rather than just overall number.

So youā€™ll find a lower murder rate but higher violent crime rate.

How are we defining violent crime? Some stats include crimes where violence is merely threatened rather than actual, some donā€™t. So make sure youā€™re comparing like with like if youā€™re comparing different countries.

Lower murder rates are good. Possibly the change in stats of homicide vs violent crime is because (or partly because) more victims are surviving attacks by armed criminals. If so this is a good thing, though of course far from ideal. If gun control brings about a scenario where fewer lives are lost because the weapons used by criminals tend to be less lethal ones like knives, well and good.

And I would argue knives ARE way less lethal. Iā€™ve never heard of any case where a single attacker armed with a knife or knives has managed to kill a dozen people and wound ten more in the space of a mere half a minute - but the Port Arthur gunman did. Nor a case where an assassin armed only with a knife or knives has managed, from the sixth floor of a building, to kill someone and seriously wound another person, both of whom were in a moving vehicle on the street nearby - but Lee Harvey Oswald did just that.
 
Gun control vs. people control. We have lots of firearms in the area I liveā€¦ and next to no home invasions, etc. Amongst the ā€œlocalā€ population out here, murders, etc. were very rare. As more riff-raff has moved in from other areas, crime has gone way up. They still donā€™t like trying to kick in front doors in the middle of the nightā€¦ something about Mr. 12 gauge coming to meet themā€¦

Has to do with the mindset of the person with the weapon, than anything.

To be fair, these are specialized knives, with specific functions.

There are whole models of firearms that are designed to knock down small metal plates ( check out the sport of 3-Gun )

All those are designed for very specific purposes, none of which involve killing. Much like knives or cars.
