Hackers hit church's collection plate

I don’t care for the headline, but so far this is the only news item I can find on what happened.

“It’s gone,” Bishop Richard Pates tells CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian. “You kind of have to take a deep breath and you have to trust in the Lord.”

What was gone - all gone - was the more than $680,000 the diocese had just raised to help the homeless and abused women.

It was swiped in a covert attack by hackers.

“Why would they do it in a particular time, where we had the greatest amount of funds available?” Pates asked.

The good news is that insurance and the bank have been able to cover the amount which was lost. However, I would think a claim this large will cost the diocese with higher insurance premiums.

Sadly yes it is wrong. Sinful Extortion at its best.

I would think any vulnerable Church computer is child’s play to any sophisticated hacker looking for sensitive info and bank accounts etc.
