I don’t mind shaking hands during the sign of peace, but it has largely been replaced with a bow of the head in these parts. Probably because of the massive influx of Asians (Filipinos, Chinese, Koreans, etc) over the past few decades. I for one applaud the bow over the hand shake… especially as I am very prone to colds.

Our pastor gave everyone a short lesson in church. He told the congregation about several things they should stop doing:
  1. Quit talking in church before and after Mass. It is the house of God and not a meeting hall. Others may want the silence to pray. Talk outside.
  2. Quit leaving Mass immediately after receiving Communion. Stay until the Mass is ended.
  3. Stop using the Orans position during the Our Father which is reserved for the priest to do. Also, it is not required to hold hands. At the Kiss of Peace, it is appropriate to greet the persons closest to you and shaking hands is optional.
Of course some people chose to leave right after Communion anyway.

Wow. I’m impressed. I wouldn’t mind a pastor like that in my church. Unfortunately my pastor is the one doing all the talking before mass and disturbing my chance to pray. I totally agree with stopping with the Orans position during the Our Father. When I first came back to the church after 30 years and saw people doing this I was like “whoa! seems a little southern baptist-like!” I really was shocked. In fact the first two churches I went to everyone in the church either held their hands in the Orans position or held hands. Finally I found a church where at least half the people did neither. That’s where I landed for now (but I wish the priest would stop it with the before mass gab-fest).

It was an accident, travelbug You can feel worried about it if you can’t help it. But it’s okay to let it go. Plus you even apologized. Jesus and Mary love you. That’s what matters.

I like number 1 especially! I think the behavior there depends a lot on the priest.

Don’t think there are any good germs on your hands! 😃
We have good germs (bacteria) on every inch of us. Scientists are finding that lack of good bacteria often results in everything from physiological to mental symptoms. Fascinating, but I won’t gross you out.
