Pastor John Hagee sent a letter today click here] to Catholic League president Bill Donohue that effectively ends the dispute the two men have had. Donohue comments as follows:

“After weeks of meeting with various Catholic leaders, and accessing scholarly literature on Catholic-Jewish relations, Pastor John Hagee has demonstrated an improved understanding of the Catholic Church and its history. In his letter to me, Hagee says, ‘I want to express my deep regret for any comments that Catholics have found hurtful.’ He specifically cites his emphasis of ‘the darkest chapters in the history of Catholic and Protestant relations with the Jews,’ and has pledged to provide a more complete and balanced portrayal going forward that will not reinforce mischaracterizations of the Catholic Church. And while he stresses that his invocation of terms like ‘apostate church’ and the ‘great whore’ were never meant by him to describe the Catholic Church, he acknowledges that anti-Catholics have long employed such language.

“The tone of Hagee’s letter is sincere. He wants reconciliation and he has achieved it. Indeed, the Catholic League welcomes his apology. What Hagee has done takes courage and quite frankly I never expected him to demonstrate such sensitivity to our concerns. But he has done just that. Now Catholics, along with Jews, can work with Pastor Hagee in making interfaith relations stronger than ever. Whatever problems we had before are now history. This case is closed.”

That’s good news. I suppose I should stop becoming so cynical about the political process and instead see some of it’s fruits.

Thanks for posting.

That is great news. I admit I am surprised, though. Given all his rhetoric over the years, I figured he was pretty much stuck in his ways. If Hagee is sincere, I think I see the Holy Spirit at work.

Some people a hampering over that this gesture was purely political. I say if politics actually joined people closer together for once - bravo.

I don’t know how sincere Hagee is but he sure received a lot of pressure for his comments. His comments were so hateful especially for those who don’t know who he is ( I don’t ).

Once again I’m so proud of Donahue and the Catholic League.👍

My Protestant mother raised me listening to this guy’s hateful beliefs. I’m all too familiar with him and that’s why I think, if he is sincere, it was the Holy Spirit that is leading him away from his hate and toward the truth.

sorry I did search on Hagee before I posted and this thread did not show up,

Very nice and timely. At least one side has dealt satisfactory with their pastoral issues.

Frankly, I don’t think he is sincere. It is a political move on his part in support of a candidate. I’ve got Brother Jimmy on my doorstep and the leopard does not change his spots overnight. Jimmy is not in the national spotlight any longer. As such he is irrelevent on the national scene but his spots have not changed. He is every bit as virulently anti-Catholic at 4 am on a Sunday morning as he was at 10.

I’d like to hear from folks in the Archdiocese of San Antonio - what do y’all think of this? Has the leopard really changed his spots? If y’all think it’s sincere, I’ll reconsider.

I believe he is sincere. When someone apologizes and appears sincere, I give them the benefit of the doubt. I myself have been forgiven after offering apologies in the confessional that took far less courage and effort than Hagee’s to the Catholic League. As Donohue said, “the case is closed”. Bless you Bill, the Catholic League, and Pastor Hagee.

“…that Catholics have found hurtful…” Is that like if my husband apologizes like this…“I’m sorry you took offense to what I said earlier.”😃 But, I’m very happy to see that Hagee gave an apology…it’s a start to unity amongst Christians!👍

Well, I’d like to believe he was inspired by Pope Benedict XVI’s ecumenical outreach when he was in the United States. It’s always possible.

Yes, you could be right. I think Pope Benedict’s trip was very inspiring and bridged a gap between Christians…it seemed like the US had a blanket of peace and hope over it during that time:o

Time will tell if he is sincere or not. If he slowly starts interjecting anti-Catholic rhetoric into his sermons after November, then you’ll know it was just a political ploy. If he can refrain from spewing any anti-Catholic venom after he is no longer in the political spotlight for several years, then he is being sincere.

Bottom line. The issue of him being sincere or not is not between Hagee and us or Hagee and Donahue. It’s between Hagee and God.

Very well said.

I’m not as optimistic as most of the posters. I’ve watched this guy and heard the hate speech, some of it just a couple weeks back.

But anything’s possible with God. One day Saul was killing christians and the next day he was Paul preaching Chritianity:shrug:

Some apology. He had no idea that the use of the word “whore”, as in “whore of babylon”, might be offensive. If you belive that, get ready to buy a wonderful bridge in Brooklyn

Just the other day I came across his show while flipping channels and he was spewing some pretty preposterous stuff.

We’ll see how this goes.

Yes, such things do happen. But I am willing to give Hagee the benefit of the doubt, and look for him to speak warmly of fellowship with us Catholics. He promised to do so in his letter.

BTW, is anyone else having trouble viewing the letter? I can read the last two pages, but the first page is blank.

I’m fairly suspicious of this guy, too. But I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I remember very well all of his hateful teachings. But the Lord can work wonders with anyone.
