The protoevangelium of James isn’t what would call authoritative, but it’s a document from about 150 AD which names Mary’s mother as Ann. Does that mean we “know” this is correct? Not in the sense you mean, as stand-alone conclusive historical proof, no. But its mere existence shows that not all information about Mary comes from Scripture. It is incorrect to say that, “it is only in the New Testament that we know of her.” We would have known of her anyway.How do you know this is correct? When was this first mentioned?
