Just a minor nitpick. England and Wales is an episcopal conference comprised of several provinces… I think 5 in fact.

I realize it frustrates some people to no end…people who frankly are overly scrupulous in liturgical matters…but there is enormous leeway in the rubrics of the Novus Ordo in certain aspects, including in the so-called Bidding Prayers.

The “Hail Mary” can be used here, and so can plenty of other things. It’s a part of the rite that allows tremendous freedom, by design.

Historically, one can see why this rite fell into disuse organically over the centuries.

Back in my home diocese today. The parish I went to today said the Prayer to Saint Michael after the Prayer of the Faithful. Another first for me. It has always been said at the end of Mass.

Either that or they adapted when they became priests in the UK.

I’ve grown up Catholic in England and all of my priests have been from Ireland and as far back as I remember, in any parish I’ve been to, the prayers of the faithful were always followed by the Hail Mary.

In fact I’m stunned to find out that this isn’t the universal practice.
