do you think women should have long hair? is it more proper? is it more feminine? if it is more feminine, should it then be covered so as not to attract attention from men? does it matter? should it at least be covered for Mass?
i have had short hair and long hair and midlength hair and i always wonder if it is wrong how i wear it. right now i am growing it out again – it is very curly so it is hard to say how long it is, but it is bouncing at my shoulders again. i have been ‘mommy’ for 22 years and my youngest is now 5 so i’m more inclined to have a more time consuming hair style than when i was caring for babies and so very busy. i just wonder if it is more ‘correct’ long so as to be who God wants me to be, or was it alright to go with what made it easier as long as it was nice looking and modestly attractive. yes, probably i’ll get dumped on and thought of as overboard, but i’m just really wondering and would appreciate your thoughts.

Personal preference.

I love long hair, my wife likes to have it just touching the shoulders but I like it down the back, just above the bum.

Just have what makes you happy but I think a skinheadis the worst haircut for a woman.

🙂

I’ve had a variety of hair-lengths. Current style? Wig. 😦

Due to medications I’m on, my hair has fallen out. It’s growing back pretty good, except for around my very FRONT and around my crown area. I now wear a wig. I have two good wigs–one that is chin-length and another that is past my shoulders. I have to admit, I like the one past my shoulders because it lets me “play with my hair” like I did when I was a kid. I can’t wait for the day when my own hair has grown back! I probably wouldn’t want it too long (I live in the South!) but something past my shoulders or almost half-way down my back. 👍

Oh, and Dad likes long hair but Mom’s hair has always been thin so it can only get to her shoulders. My two sisters have long-ish hair (past their shoulders) as well. 🙂

No, long hair is not more “proper”. It is a matter of preference.

Wear it how it looks best and works best for you. Longer hair is nice to have but can be a pain to fix and maintain. Shorter hair depending on the cut can be easier unless you have thick hair like mine that insists on sticking out in awkward places. Both have pros and cons.

It’s like any sort of thing like dress etc, it really is up to the person. It’s not a moral issue. Some people cover their hair because they feel called to do so but it does not make not covering wrong. Same as the pants vs. skirts debate.

Currently I have really long hair. I was growing it out to donate it to Wigs For Kids, a organization that gives wigs to kids with cancer (Not Locks of Love! do your research!) So after our wedding I’m cutting it off to jaw length. I don’t view this as wrong. And even if I wanted to keep it short, it wouldn’t be wrong.

Personally I prefer long hair, as does my fiance, but I’m willing to go short for a while.

I’ll say that I generally prefer medium to long hair for women, because I really like the Biblical phrase “a woman’s hair is her crowning glory” and my opinion is that longer hair is gloriously feminine. HOWEVER, I have seen some downright beautiful short and sassy pixie cuts that look better than longer styles on women who have heart-shaped faces. I think the only thing that would be grievous in terms of hairstyle is for a woman to purposefully shave off her hair out of spite or some other misguided notions. HOWEVER, there are women who bravely shave their heads as they begin cancer treatment, and there are women who bravely do so in support of a sister, mother, or friend who is losing her hair to cancer treatment. These women should be applauded for their courage.
I do not believe that women NEED to cover their hair in mass or during adoration, in order to disguise their beauty or for some other reason. HOWEVER, many women take up the discipline of headcovering for some very good reasons, and that should be respected.
How’s that for a clear and definitive answer? 😛

Hair length and style (for both women and men) is a cultural matter. Mentions in the Bible of hair length reflect cultural and old covenant norms. Men do generally seem to prefer women to have longer hair and I think women ought to take that into account. But ultimately I figure the person (so long as they are an adult) wearing the hair gets to decide that he/she doesn’t want it longer.

I think women (unless they are models or something) ought to be prudent and find a style that is attractive but does not *usually *require a lot of time or effort. Whether that style is short, medium, or long will depend on the woman.

As far as covering the hair at Mass, our current code of law does not require a head covering for women. But covering the head is still traditional in some nations and in some subcultures of Western society. I believe it is still customary to cover the head when one attends an EF Mass.

My hair looks like witch hair when it is long. The color and texture do not work well with length.

You know, for a long time I have wanted to look into an expert perspective on that passage you cited, because I wonder what other non literal meaning it might have.

Gosh, it males me feel bad for women with alopecia or otherwise difficult hair or hair problems. Reading that would make me feel awful if I was in that position.😦

Personally my hair looks best shoulder blade length but only if it has layers in the front, off my face somewhat, or lighter around my face. That or an angled bob at about collar bone length are best. My hair is naturally very very curly but also fine, so the longer it gets the more dragged down it looks. There is no moral issue with hair length that I know of.

I’ve had long hair all my adult life & have no intention of cutting it. It’s just a personal preference. Tho my husband gave me a bit of a shock when he told me he really likes shorter hair! 🤷

I do think elderly women should consider having longish hair - or at least have it nicely styled. I’ve seen too many older couples who look like twins!

I had long hair, and loved it…well usually not while I was in the midst of doing something with it, ;)😛 but in general. However, with my son just being born, he really likes to pull it, and I don’t like having my hair pulled back because it gives me a headache. A couple weeks ago I noticed how much it was getting in his face and in his mouth 😦 so I decided to cut it. Being cheap, I had my husband do it! He did an excellent job, and cut it exactly where I told him to. Unfortunately, I didn’t visualize well, and I was imagining it being at my chin, but actually pointed to my mid jaw. Which makes it right above my ear. 😦 Much shorter than I planned. It’s pretty easy for now, but will get more difficult as my curl comes in because I have ridiculous, backwards hair and it appears my hair is MORE curly the longer it is. 🤷

That being said, I will never cut it again besides a trim. I was sad when he took the first cut. And, he was too. We both liked my hair long, and miss it! So, hopefully those prenatal vitamins continue to let my hair grow faster! I’ll deal with the headaches.

Sorry for the overuse of smileys.

Hair is a natural human attribute, that takes on cultural value. Long hair or short hair can be acceptable, depending on the time and place.

Famous southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd is back in the news, because their namesake, Florida physical education teacher, Leonard Skinner, died this week. Mr. Skinner was a notorious enforcer of hair length regulations, at the high school the band members attended. So, with a spelling variation, the band was named after Skinner.

It was the same at my high school, with authoritarian administrators micromanaging boy’s hair styles. The girls were left alone, though.

Bottom line: Hair length and style is a personal preference, which sould not be dictated by anyone else.

I think women look better with long hair - AND - you can donate it to Locks of Love. (Can’t do that w/ short hair.)

I’ll let the ladies in on a little secret from the world of men. All men like women with long(er) hair. If a guy tells you otherwise, he’s lying. Every self-respecting man knows this. It’s like a guy telling you he enjoyed the new Julia Roberts movie or the ballet.

I don’t think this is much of a secret. We know this. Generally speaking men like long hair. You know, the whole woman walking in a field of lavender at sunset in a sundress and bare feet with her down to her ankles hair being gently blown by the wind while she turns her head and give you ‘that look’. We know all about that.

I think though that when a man really knows a particular woman, and appreciates her unique beauty like a husband does, he can genuinely like her in another, shorter, hairstyle. He still maybe prefer it long, but can appreciate it shorter too.

This is not true for every man Nec5. My stepdad greatly prefers short and sweet haircuts. He asked my mom to keep it shorter (it is naturally thick and wavy, so her shorter cut left a lot of cute curls around her face). After she divorced him, he went out and found himself a carbon copy of my mom, right down to the same short dark wavy brown hair cut. Kinda creepy to see him marrying my mother’s ‘twin’, but at least I could tell he really did like the way my mom looked all those years! 🤷 So some men really do like sassier cuts on their wives. 😛

He’s in denial. I’ll buy him a few beers and he’ll confess soon enough.😃

And sorry about the divorce.

I have always have had long hair (hence the name Rapunzel). I usually go to the salon to get a trim but that is about it. My husband LOVES my long hair so I don’t think I am going to get it cut short anytime soon. The hair is about to my waist and almost touches my behind. My husband would love to see my hair down to my ankles but I don’t think that is going to happen anytime soon…LOL :).

The last paragraph is so true for my husband. I’ve worn my hair both short and long, currently long. He has been dropping hints he likes me with a shorter hair cut and would actually like me to stop coloring my hair and let it go gray. I’m only 43, not quite ready to do that yet but he has planted a seed.
