Hand Shake of Peace

I am torn on this.

On the one hand, we have a community/immanent Church event immediately prior to the culmination of the Mass, the Fractioning Rite, Agnus Dei and reception of the Eucharist. Seems to me that one should be focused on the Transcendant at this point.

On the other hand, we are commanded to love God and our neighbor. I then see the KOP as a symbol for forgiving our neighbor (and remaining open and loving to him) before we then go to receive Our Lord. It would seem to be sensible to be right with our neighbor (even if only symbolically) before we go to meet God.

Bottom line: My instinct wishes it would be eliminated or placed directly after the recitation of the Creed (or even BEFORE THE MASS STARTS), but I can see the logic of offering it as it is.

I love the sign of peace. I like reaching out to those around me. If I’m ill, I will just nod and smile, but if someone else is ill, and they reach, I take it. I just wash my hands thoroughly after mass. I figure I come in contact with millions of cold and flu germs a day anyway, at least this comes from a good thing.
I feel the same. I think it is a great sign as a reminder of loving your neighbour - the ‘horizontal rather than vertical’ aspect of Christianity.

In this post I think I see that the majority does not like the sign of peace.

I would propose that the ones who like the SOP ARE DEMOCRATS or at least LIBERALS. They are they ones who like the the new innovation in the Mass, and are more likely to be charismatics.

Hey! no classifying!

Deacon Tony560:
Read about how St. Francis came up to a leper and grabbed him and hugged and kissed him. This was the type of person that he would not even look at, before his conversion.

Yes. But leprosy is not contagious through touching; but inventigo, tuberculosis, lice, filth, hepatitis A, B, & C. etc. are.

I attend the St. Anthony’s Shrine because it does cater to the homeless, and being a reticent person I do not shake hands with any total stranger, and I will not be forced to shake hands or hug or kiss a malignant bum or wino that even Priests wear rubber gloves before touching in Mass. If a Priest orders me to put my hand in a fire, I will respectfully decline.

hey now that i heard of the kiss of peace im starting to gain interest. how about the french kiss of peace? 😉

When we have the handshake break at our Church I just figure that God will protect everyone from the germs and such. I’m a germaphobe type person, but funny thing is during that time I am more afraid that people will walk past me without offering to shake my hand. I felt so bad this past Sunday when the Pastor walked past me with my hand slightly extended. I know he was running short on time, but it still hurt, then again I am just dumb that way.

Well, ya know…when in Paris…😉

Tell me you are kidding, JLW. My pastor does this ALL THE TIME, and in the face of a correction from our bishop.

Some priests just insist on it.

That would make people pay much more attention to who they sit next to. 😉

What is “the handshake break”? I must have missed that in the GIRM. Sounds like the political rope line. That must be when they sing “We are faaaaamileeeeee”. 😉

Guys, Shinobu is a non-Catholic Christian. Check out the profile. That’s why s/he said “pastor”, too.

I assume you mean in this thread, and I’m not sure how you can make such a broad generalization when the topic of the poll is shaking the hand of your neighbor when he is ill, and even then almost half said they would do so enthusiastically.

I would respectfully disagree that conclusions like that can be drawn about those who support the restoration of the sign of peace since the Second Vatican Council.

That’s about as valid as proposing that everyone who lives in deep south Texas is a NASCAR loving redneck who’s married to their first cousin – if not one of their siblings.

That is correct, thank you for clarifying that. I’m sorry I wasn’t specific. In our Church the Pastor generally walks around during “the hand shake break” (I’m sorry I can’t remember the real name of the event) and greets along with others.

Oops! A stereotype, eh? I’m a gun-totin, pistol-packin Hoosier liberal (and proud of it, except for maybe the “Hoosier” part), and I hate the SOP thing. My church also insists on “greeting your neighbor” before the mass starts. I usually try look busy praying or sleeping to discourage people from bothering me.

I have no problem with the sign of peace. It is however an option, not a requirement.

It concerns me that often people are too busy shaking hands and they completely blow off the Agnus Dei, a far more important component of the Mass.

I never shake hands during the hand shake of peace becaause I do not wish to catch anybody else’s germs.

John

What wrong with shaking hands? I don’t do that unless someone extends the hand to me or I am with friends or relatives, but what’s wrong about it?

However, kiss of peace looks like a far stretch. Nothing inherently wrong about that, but just why do that? And too much room for abuse.
I JUST PUT MY HEAD DOWN AND IGNORE TO ITS OVER
