Handling anti-Catholic bigotry online or in person

Online or in person…How do u handle the blatant horrible attacks of untruths, accusations and put downs by pentecostals (and other protestant sects) who think theyre litteral prophets, who hate Jews and the Catholic Church? Ppl who think Jesus wasnt a Jew etc etc etc

I spent literally hours defending the faith online for the benefit of ppl reading the discourse, because i feel its my duty, and because quite frankly it really upset me to hear the vile things they say about the Pope and our Church. This was supposed to be a Christian forum!

I didnt resort to name calling but i did eventually call martin luther a heretic and the reformation evil…in a very angry way. I guess u could say i picked up the mud they were slinging at me and threw it back at them.

How are we supposed to handle ppls bigotry like that? I find most protestants litterally hate Catholicism to varying degress across all denominations.

Why do they hate the Catholic Church so much?

People hate other people because they are all mixed up inside and hurt about something. (I paraphrased that from “The Family Nobody Wanted” where the one little boy was getting called racist names by his schoolmates.)

You shouldn’t argue with haters, it’s like trying to teach a pig to sing. When the Apostles ran into closed minds, they shook the dust from their sandals and moved on to the next town.

Just pray for them. And as the Gospel today said, if people hate on you because of Jesus Christ, be happy, you’re blessed.

As for Protestant bigotry, we handle it the same way we handle Catholics making bigoted remarks about Protestants, gays or any other group. Those Catholics would probably chime in and say “that’s not bigotry, that’s the TRUTH” and the Pentecostal person would say the exact same thing.
 
I’m going through the same thing with a relative over social media. He posts vile and anti-Catholic things all the time. I respond to each and every one with the truth and scripture to back it up.

I will keep defending the faith until he stops posting hateful and anti-Catholic posts or until he sees the truth.

@(name removed by moderator) - I have asked him why more times than I can count and his only answer is the Catholic Church is not in the bible so therefore not true. 🤯 Even when I show him where it is in scripture he either ignores my post or gives some twisted interpretation of the passage.
 
I like the asking “why” part because I like to know what causes people to think and do what they do, regardless of whether it’s a saint or a multiple murderer we’re discussing.

As for enlightening them however, you can surely try and sometimes it works. However, don’t be disappointed or discouraged if they totally ignore or reject your good explanation.
 
I’ve been to prolife rallies where people were holding anti-Catholic signs. I dealt with it by telling someone from the Legion of Mary to talk to them.
 
Thnk u Deacon. Ohhh i tried so hard and held my temper for 90% of it. They were making accusations they truly believed that…
  1. RCC believesJesus’s father is lucifer
  2. That one of the kingdoms is not Jewish therefore not many true Jews exist…
  3. They didnt believe Jesus descended from from the line of David thru Mary.
  4. That Jesus wasnt a Jew (that was extremely important to them.) Some called Jews horrible names.
  5. A few ppl claimed to be prophets from God.
  6. That the reformation was freedom from the evil RCC.
  7. That they dont need to be baptized (most)
  8. That Our Pope said Jesus failed at the Cross.
  9. Indulgences
Etc etc etc along with calling the Pope/the Church the most vile names and continuously calling me stupid after i defended the Church on those points and wouldnt agree with them.

The convo ended with them saying they were happy Catholics were killed in england. So i left because i was at my wits end. It was just me against a ton of ppl.

Although there were a couple very vile ppl saying the worst things the other protestants were agreeing with them on most points.

In the end i felt really really angry and defensive. As posters said below i should have not argued and walked away but at the same time i felt it was necessary to defend the faith…but also defend it in love which i failed at. That upsets me the most.

Its hard to do that in love when ppl are attacking your faith with lies and u as a person.

Its hard to be like Our Lord!

To be honest, I think that “most” statement is a little overblown. Until I was in my early twenties I never thought about the Catholic Church. I just saw them as another group of Christians gathering in worship and getting on to the next life.

I can almost say the same thing…I didn’t realize that some Catholics literally hate protestants (to varying degrees) until I started going to Mass with my girlfriend (now wife) and now doing some reading on here. Heck, I’ve even run into Bigotry at my wife’s parish.

Why is that? Vocal minority?

I know how you feel I have gone through the same thing. What I did notice though is that while defending my faith and my church there are some people who once they see they are “getting” to you they push harder to make you upset. Don’t fall into that trap, always defend the church, watch for those who have no concept of what their talking about and don’t even bother with them Mean while take a deep breath and keep doing what you think is right. I think so. Most of the Catholics I know couldn’t care less if you are a Protestant or even an atheist as long as you don’t hassle them, don’t insult their religion, and aren’t going to marry their child (although they may just accept the marriage depending on the situation and the person).

Unfortunately, ecumenism and the current emphasis on “defending the faith” has caused some folks to be more extreme lately. I do not see this as the norm, and hope it doesn’t become one.
 
I stand by that comment. American history is rife with anti-Catholic sentiments. Its a well known fact that protestant denominations are antagonistic to the Catholic Church in varying degrees or they wouldnt be protestants. Far as individual protestants the the dislike of Catholics ranges from dislike to vitriol hate on a level i dont see among Catholics towards protestants.

They hate what they don’t understand because of what they have been taught or what they have read.
Just like Catholics that read Brietbart and other sites of likeness.
 
Anti-Catholics are a subset of Protestants and some Atheists.

Protestants that I know outside my family are not anti-Catholic at all. They have no idea what being anti-Catholic is about. They go to Church on Sunday and sometimes Sunday School and then go home. Unless their Pastor is anti-Catholic, they are oblivious to the anti-Catholic world.

Anti-Catholics become the way they are along the same lines as Radical Islamist become the way they are.
 
Really, you don’t see that from Catholics towards Protestants?? Have you read some of the current and active threads here in CAF?

What I do whenever I am confronted by anti-Catholic’s is to inform what I believe. I do not play their game by arguing with them or answering foolish questions. The think is they are not going to listen to what any Catholic is saying as they will either avoid the question or say some hateful thing or use some verse to try and make you think you do not know anything or have ever read the Bible. I just inform mostly because there are lurkers out there reading what was posted and they are really the one’s who might come to the truth of what you post.

Its possible that some anti-Catholic might stop and really listen to what you said and rethink their position on something, but generally speaking they are out to try and convince Catholic’s that they are wrong. This is mostly because of what they have been taught and believe from others who hate the Catholic Church and buy into whatever someone says about the catholic Church and what Catholic’s believe and what they don’t believe.

They have not read the early Church Fathers or Church history for the most part; they get their information from questionable sources who have no idea but think they know based on what others say. Sometimes its better not to answer them especially when they toss out foolish questions or statements. To ignore that sort of thing is better than trying to argue with them when they are never going to accept what that you say. They have already made their mind up long before they post anything and some just like to promote hatred toward Catholic’s and Catholic beliefs and the Catholic Church, which is why its better not to respond to that and stick with just informing what one believes.

My MIL definitely didn’t care, but she is a converted Lutheran…my FIL on the other hand I think was in that boat for a long time. I actually think some of it may have lasted until after we were married. He’s cool now and I really think that he’s opened up and become more accepting (he now has two protestant SIL’s 😮)
 
That’s not so much true. Indifference is dangerous, too. That said, I think there are tactful ways to evangelise.
