Per one of the interviews, the ‘two characters’ were the ones who weren’t originally slated for being killed, and they’re Lupin and Tonks. Obviously, there’s a lot more in DH, but those are the two additions to the ones who were always planned on.

The one who got the reprieve was Arthur Weasley (who was originally planned to have been killed in OotP).

I haven’t read the whole thread yet so I don’t know if anyone else already mentioned this, but I was reminded of Bedknobs and Broomsticks when McGonigal commanded the suits of armor to defend the castle.
