Harry Potter. Sin or no?

Being something of a Tolkien buff, let me state that most of the magic in his mythos is either performed by angelic beings (the Valar and Maiar are angels) and by the Elves, which were made much like the Valar, though of lesser stature. Few mortals in the mythos have any such power, save the Numenoreans, who are in part descended from Elf and Maiar, and of course sorcery like the Rings, which are inherently evil. Even the Three Rings of the Elves were tainted not only because Sauron’s knowledge was used to make them, but also because they were an attempt at preservation in defiance of Illuvatar (God).

He doesn’t seem to be the type of man who says things on the fly. I would trust him over others who may have something to hide. I’ve also heard a teaching of his where he says an exorcist friend of his while performing an exorcism was told by the demon that he entered into the kid via Harry Potter. I don’t for one second doubt Father’s teachings. Seems to me he is a holy priest who is looking after God’s people as he is commanded to do. What on earth does he stand to gain by repeating lies or misinformation?
Since I’m not beholden to believe anyone just because they’re a priest, you’ll pardon my skepticism.

It’s not a sin unless it creates some kind of weird situation of scandal. So unless you’re using for some other evil purpose, you’re fine.

Watching this kind of media is not in and of itself a sin, but I don’t think it carries great merit.

I don’t know who his source was but he obviously didn’t read the books himself. One writer who has criticised HP admitted he hadn’t read the books, only brief excerpts from them. For spells to be real they either gave to work or they have to be a part of traditional witchcraft; they don’t and they aren’t.

I watched a few of Fr. Ripperger’s videos but didn’t watch this one, deliberately. My concerns were spot on: he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and all he ever seems to do is give validity to judging others.

People who happily lack the experience of being deeply entrenched in the world of the occult will often be very unlikely to see it before their eyes, which is the idea, obviously. My heart goes out to them, because being unable to distinguish between the darkness and the light is not a good place to be in, even when you know you have such a confusing and difficult problem, much less when you’re blind to your own blindness. I feel very sad writing this because I wish that people, especially children, wouldn’t have to suffer at the hands of wiley and wicked people who would use their knowledge of hidden things to destroy every good thing, were it possible. I wish there was anything I could say about it to do any good, but when people won’t even listen to respectable spiritual authorities, there would be no cause to listen to me.

As for the spells and incantations being “real” or not, suffice it to say that if you wish, even out of curiosity and ignorance, to try your hand at it, even your own made up, nonsensical words or sounds would suffice. The intention is what counts the most.

After writing a very lengthy and personally emotionally difficult-to-write post attempting to elaborate my position and enlighten those who are unfamiliar with the insidious and subtle ways that certain occultists operate in this and other worlds, in addition to giving examples from the books that are so truly occultic (hidden) in nature that the uninitiated would never notice (as opposed to obvious themes such as magic and sorcery), among many other things such as pleads for prayers for the victims of such enemies of God, my post wasn’t able to go through and was erased. (A very natural explanation being that my session probably timed out)

To the snide and unenlightened replies directed at me, I don’t care to directly respond to, but I will say that I am quite assured of both your lack of a lifetime background in the world of the occult and ignorance of the workings of the same, to say nothing of the lack of awareness of or compassion for the sufferings of those who are the victims of it in various ways.

To those, I will say you should be grateful that you are not victims of the occult, but rather simply your own arrogance. That’s much easier to handle than what those of us who are far more experienced in the matter must live with.

What next? Wonder Woman is a witch? Superman is satanic? Batman is Be’elzibub?
I suspect the Church probably addressed this back in the day when the comics were supposedly corrupting American youth and there was some congressional inquiry into them.

Actually there is a lot of weird questionable stuff in comics, much worse than Harry Potter IMHO, but I tend to think that adult Catholics should be able to use their conscience to select things to read based on the reason for reading and the context, same with music we listen to, movies we watch, etc. For kids, their parents can make the decisions.

I’m really, really sorry to hear this. I am less inclined to believe a secular world view over priests…especially priests who are exorcists and have every appearance of holiness.

There’s a book called “Baptizing Harry Potter” written by a Catholic priest that takes the opposite position…

Yes, and maybe this is the priest Fr. Ripperger is alluding to in his video. Unfortunately, there are also unholy priests in the Church.

You could always, oh I dunno, actually demonstrate that there are real incantations in Harry Potter. It’s been about a decade since I read the series, but as I recall, most of it was a sort of Pig Latin. If real witches use that as their incantations, then they’re even sillier than I thought they were.

Have you actually read any of the books?

And so the same can be said for the Republican Party. How will we answer our children when they asked why we voted for bringing back Torture?
Perhaps in the same manner we’ll answer to the millions of aborted babies? Talk about torture…have you not watched video on partial birth abortions? Unfortunately, neither the republican party nor the democrat party in the US are for the Social Reign of Christ the King, but to insinuate that the republican party is more evil than the democrat party is insipid. There isn’t an immoral activity the democrat party doesn’t love; there isn’t an immoral activity the republican party hates.

There are no such things as “witch schools”, and the spells definitely aren’t real. Not liking the books is one thing, slandering the reputation of the author is another - not saying that you are doing so, just that the information you stated can be construed as such.

No I haven’t…because I’m less inclined to believe a secular world view over holy priests. I don’t watch TV, listen to secular music and am very careful of what movies to see at the theater. Why would I ignore holy priests/exorcists such as Fr. Ripperger? The whole cult-like love of HP should raise a red flag for a Christian. But of course if you’re an atheist this means nothing to you. Good luck. I hope one day soon you are blessed with faith.

So, having no personal knowledge of the books in question, without having verified any claim, you declare some random priest to be the authority on the wickedness of Harry Potter?

I’m fairly certain the faux Latin spells found in the HP books are not used by real occultists, who would, I hope, actually know enough Latin to make it sound convincing. You can pick any authority figure you like, but let me be first to say this priest is hopelessly wrong.

I would agree that some people should not read them. No one who can’t tell the difference between fiction and reality should read any fiction at all, for that matter.
These books are about friendship, and loyalty, and opposing evil, and doing the right thing even when it’s difficult. Good lessons for us all.

There we go again with the Abortion dribble again. Do you ever get tired bringing that up in every conversation? It is like when a Protestant starts to lose a debate, they launch into their anti-Catholic diatribe. I personally see no distinction here.
