Democratic political candidates can skip this weekend’s July 4th parades. A new Harvard University study finds that July 4th parades energize only Republicans, turn kids into Republicans, and help to boost the GOP turnout of adults on Election Day.
“Fourth of July celebrations in the United States shape the nation’s political landscape by forming beliefs and increasing participation, primarily in favor of the Republican Party,” said the report from Harvard. [See political cartoons about the 2012 GOP field.]
“The political right has been more successful in appropriating American patriotism and its symbols during the 20th century. Survey evidence also confirms that Republicans consider themselves more patriotic than Democrats. According to this interpretation, there is a political congruence between the patriotism promoted on Fourth of July and the values associated with the Republican party. Fourth of July celebrations in Republican dominated counties may thus be more politically biased events that socialize children into Republicans,” write Harvard Kennedy School Assistant Professor David Yanagizawa-Drott and Bocconi University Assistant Professor Andreas Madestam.

Sorry about the garbled up html tags showing up the first time. I edited those out.

LOL! I, the only liberal on my street, am the only one who flies the American flag at every patriotic occasion! Don’t be so quick to put all your trust in Harvard!
Fascist!!! :p. I’ve never been to to a July 4 parade, because I tend to avoid parades in general. Mainly because they make traffic horrific and I am quite a bore.

On topic: this study shouldn’t serve as the basis for any generalizations (though it probably will anyway), but it is hardly surprising. The right side of the spectrum is, and generally has been for the last 150 years, relatively more nationalistic than the lef side. I can’t imagine parades make children Republicans though. In all likelihood children who attend 7/4 events go with their parents, who are likely to be more conservative than those who don’t attend these parades, like me, and it is well known that children tend to adopt the politics of their parents. Did these academics control for such “confounding variables?”

Its blasphemy as otherwise he is saying that Democrats aren’t patriotic or care about their country!!!

The left have their own July 4th.

On April 15th.

Remember, paying more taxes is the patriotic thing to do.

Are you implying that “the Left” (which on here apparently means from about Mitt Romney on rightward) celebrates September 11? So much for that famed conservative civility you guys claim to have on every thread where any liberal ever says anything offensive and it inexplicably becomes “news” on CAF. I can’t say I would expect anything else though, unfortunately.

it was a tongue-in-cheek reply to a tongue-in-cheek post. . Sorry you didn’t get it.

It is disgusting to make a statement that liberals consider 9/11 a holiday to celebrate. I used to think well of you, Bob, in spite of our political differences. You’ve crossed the line now saying that as far as I’m concerned.

This comes as a great relief. Usually conservatives are charged with being the only people in the U.S. who harbor biases. That assertion is now thoroughly debunked. 🙂

Should I have said 4-1?

BREATHING is ‘right-wing’ as far as Harvard is concerned.

Back to the OP…

I think this actually makes sense. I was listening to a discussion on Catholic Radio the other day talking about how so many of the positions that were “leftist” in the 50s and 60s are now mainstream… The “left” (*I hate that term, BTW) has adopted a perspective on many issues that makes overt patriotism somewhat uncomfortable for them. We heard this in the 2008 election cycle where there was lots of talk about the “evil” of American exceptionalism. The 4th of July is all about American exceptionalism!

4th of July parades also tend to attract participant groups that lean “right” - VFW groups, Boy Scouts, DAR (or DofC, in Texas), American Legion, Lions, etc. It makes sense that the fans of the marchers are also of the conservative persuasion.

I miss the old fashioned 4th parades, they used to shut down the main stretch of road for a good two miles in my town and there were school bands, firetrucks, convertibles with local dignitaries, KofC, Elks Club, little leaguers and the whole nine yards. everone would line up along the sidewalk with folding chairs. Followed by a terrific fireworks display in the town ball field at first dark.
Not any more, it’s a block or two of town at most and no fireworks
Makes me feel like everyone died…😦

It is a big event anin our mountain town and we will have tens of thousands of people coming to town for the fireworks display.

I don’t know how it is anywhere else, but, for instance, the fireworks display in VERY liberal St. Louis City is spectacular. Of course, maybe all the participants are conservatives from the County. 🙂

There may be truth to the Harvard position. In my town in the Ozarks, the Fourth is a MAJOR event. Parades, re-enactors, air show, vendors of every kind, speeches, and stunning fireworks, soldiers in uniform. Thousands of attendees. And the area is about as Republican as Republican gets nowadays.

It’s funny how things have changed. There were once lots of Democrats; close to half the population. Used to elect Democrats a lot. But when the Democrat party lurched hard left, it just left everybody adrift. Most seem to have gone Republican by default. Also, it’s a very prolife area, and the party’s devotion to abortion on demand threw a lot of prolife Democrats to the curb with noplace to go.

But back when there were still Democrats who were not hard left, some of those Fourth of July speeches were delivered by Democrats and it didn’t seem at all out of character.

I could care less what Harvard says 😃

You’ll find me flag-waving… swimming…picnicking…fire-working
:clapping::dancing::extrahappy:

You should hear my Big Brothers cannon echoing above the lake.😃

I’ll celebrate my countries Independence…

That is not what will turn me into a Republican… whatever label ].

What WILL decide my vote for / against a party…
The party that understands Social Justice does not exist when it fails the most innocent of society.
