Greetings YoungTradCath,
Thank you so much for replying to my inquirires yesterday.
I am looking for Latin hymns too. I may have to just order one of these these just to look it over.
Oh and thanks for the other links. I am a member of musicsacra forums, it has been awhile since I have logged back in.
Okay option 4 in the GIRM have not read the new GIRM what is that?
And one more question, if you were to say what are the drawbacks of Vatican II hymanl what would they be? I just want a full picture, thanks.
God Bless.

Option 4 is how the music got the baby thrown out with the bathwater. It’s what allows anything and everything music-wise at mass.
Drawbacks? Not lots of Latin hymns, but the classics are there, and LOTS of ordinary (Kyrie, Gloria, etc.) settings in Latin/Greek.

Greetings FrDavid96,
I sure would appreciate it if you do happen to run across anything.
I understood what you are describing and this makes sense to me. I had another question, have you heard of the gradual and do you use this? [Oh anyone else is welcome to chime in on this by the way.]
I was thinking maybe of doing the Psalms from the gradual since those do sound like what they are supposed to, but I had wondered if they had English versions of it or if everthing was still done in Latin. I don’t think it would be helpful to do the responsorial psalm in Latin for Masses as most of the Congregation does not understand it, even though they have expressed a desire and interest for more Latin in the services in regards to music, hence this having to look for a new hymnal, of which I am very glad to comply.
God Bless.

There are no responsorial psalms in the Roman Gradual. They are the graduals (which is where the RG got its name), which the responsorial psalms take the place of. The gradual is not responsorial at all, it is sung completely by the choir. They are quite beautiful although not used often at all in the OF, although the Pope has been using them as of late.
Same problem here.
I have not seen a gradual in English. Doesn’t mean they’re not out there, only that I haven’t seen any. Maybe I just haven’t been looking in the right place?
GREGORIAN MISSAL. Read the quote below and follow the instructions from Windmill. The Gregorian Missal is a direct English translation of the Latin Roman Gradual of 1974, and is free online. Please note, however, that no Gradual contains responsorial psalms, only the graduals (Gradual is the book that
contains the graduals and other antiphons, hard to keep it straight); resp. psalms are only a replacement for the “first option,” which is the graduals.
Depending on what you are looking for, here are some other titles to consider:
Parish Book of Chant
English Gradual (this is for the Anglican Use within the Roman Rite, but still usable)
Gregorian chant resources at GIA(missals, libers, etc)
Motecta Trium Vocum (This is more for Communion meditationals sung by the choir)
The men’s Gregorian chant group I sing in uses the MTV, and the parishes we sing at LOVE it. At the most recent Mass we sang for (a TLM wedding Mass), the priest came up afterwards to the choir loft and told us it was heavenly. i’m not bragging, I’m just saying the music is outstanding, even when done by amateurs.
If you are wanting to go really far out, then you can always consider the Gregorian Missal (soon to be reissued) that has the Propers of the Mass (Introit, Gradual, Offertory, Communion chants) instead of the Entrance Hymn, Responsorial Psalm,Offertory hymn, and Communion Hymn respectively (note, the Propers are part of the Mass, the hymns are secondary substitutes). That is on the GIA site linked above. It does not have the readings (just a reference for each reading) because it assumes you will listen to the readings at Mass in the vernacular.
Good advice.
