I can’t say I’ve had a personal experience in the way you probably mean it, but I work with a number of people who have. I’ve been in the same job in the same place for 38 years. It’s a hotel that was built in 1959, expanded in 1978 and again in 2002. I began hearing stories of strange occurrences about 25 years ago.
One day around the year 2006 there was a power outage in the afternoon due to a truck hitting an electrical pole at the end of the block. I’d been working at my computer at the time so could obviously not carry on. I decided to go over to the pub to wait things out since I was friends with the girls on duty there and knew they would likely appreciate a bit of extra security while in the semi-dark. Darkness seems to bring out the ghost stories, like sitting around a camp fire, and they each began to recount, for my benefit, things they found disturbing about working in that spot. The most common thing was hearing voices before opening to start the work day.
The voices almost always originated near the same spot and were most often heard when the employee was out of sight around a corner or in a back room. After a bit of investigation I was able to rule out sound from the street, as even traffic noises were barely discernible. Noise from above or below was also highly unlikely as the pub, when it was built with the idea of bands playing on occasion, is super insulated in both floor and ceiling. The voices, clearly speaking english but muffled enough that nothing could actually be understood, carried on and some girls refused to do close up at night by themselves. One of them had become so freaked out once that she had run screaming from the bar.
So I listened to all these stories that afternoon, adding them to the ones I had already heard over the years. One girl became very agitated just recounting what had happened to her. I calmed them down and said I would take care of it. What did I mean? they asked. I’ll just take care of it, I said, and then wondered what I was supposed to do and why I had felt I could even say that. A few days later I went over to the bar (I have a key since I’m often in there to pick up paperwork) well before opening, sat in the dark in the spot where they reported hearing the voices, and said a prayer out loud. Then I just spoke to the darkness something like; “Look, whoever you are, you’re disrupting and frightening the people who work here and you have to stop. Better move on, ok?” I waited about a month before again asking one of the girls about the voices. It was strange, she said, but no one had heard any since that talk we’d had when the power was out.
That was 12 years ago, staff has changed numerous times, and there have been no reports from the new folks of any strange goings on. I haven’t told this story to any but a very few close friends. I guess the CAF counts among them now.
