Has anyone heard of rosaries turning gold?

I have never seen an actual case of a rosary turning to gold.

However, a man in my parish who is big on Medjugorje, and who goes there every year, told me his rosary had turned to gold, when he first visited there. He showed me the rosary and in examining it, the chain was goldish, but the part of the chain, the wire that is inside the bead where the fingers can’t touch, was still silver, the original color of the wire.

When I told him that the transformation was from the acids in the oils on his fingers and pointed to the silver wire that was still inside the beads, he rejected my observation and just put the rosary back in his pocket.

The thing is, the guy works with metals in his profession and should know better.

However, he pretty much believes everything he sees at Medjugorje as a miracle. He has shown pictures after Mass, where he claims Jesus appeared in the clouds. However, unless he actually traces the outline of the image with his finger, its not obvious and even after, its a loose resemblance of a man with a beard.

Be careful with falling into easy superstition. I am not a chemist but I’ve heard there are materials that naturally turn into a golden-like color after coming in contact with certain chemicals such as body oils and sweat. Depending on someone’s body chemistry some materials coated with sterling silver will “turn” gold. If you have high levels of acids in your sweat and body oils, then there is a good chance the silver will corrode in time or that it will oxidize more quickly. This happens on such jewelry as bracelets and necklaces etc. so if your skin is fairly dry, you shouldn’t see much discoloration. Of course, silver will never turn into real gold, and depending on how your body exudes chemical traces (how much copper is in your skin) some materials could take on a yellowish cast over time.

As for rosaries turning into gold, are these people claiming the material is actually gold? One way to settle the issue is to take it to a jeweler to inspect the material/metal or ask a chemist about the reaction of certain materials to natural chemicals.

One thing on apparitions and visionaries. These are all well and good if they are approved by the Church. But be not so ready to assume that something supernatural is going on. After all this world is full of charlatans. Apparitions and visions should be treated like desserts not like the main course when nourishing our faith.

I recently heard Fr. Pacwa using the analogy of a full meal of meat and potatoes, vegetables and dessert. The meat are the Scriptures, the potatoes are the teachings of the Church. The vegetables are the writing of the saints, while visionaries and apparitions should be treated like desserts.

It seems to me that many people seem to be on a strict diet of dessert… The danger with unapproved apparitions is that if people place all their faith in them and then later on it turns out that it was a hoax, many of those people’s faith will be shaken and may even fall away from truth. Satan is a master of deception.

I never understood why people travel thousands of miles to an unapproved apparition site while our adoration chapels with the Real Presence of Christ remain rather empty. Is it faith that people have, or are they seeking signs and wonders to confirm their faith?

Just an observation.

Isn’t it likely that the people who travel to the apparitions are the same people who are in the adoration chapels?

There’s probably a natural explanation for the goldish color to appear, for example, too-enthusiastic polishing of a silver plated rosary with polish designed for sterling silver. A sterling silver rosary will oxidize to dark grey, whereas silver plating will wear off a less expensive silverplated rosary. When oxidized sterling silver is polished, the oxide is rubbed off, exposing the untarnished silver (which will appear bright silver until it, too, oxidizes.) That is why very old silver that is polished looks worn. A steel rosary can rust, which at the onset will look yellowish in color before it develops the characteristic brown. As previously noted, skin oils, and even coins in your pocket can react with a variety of metals.

Lets see…people mine are…Sandlewood…still…BUT i am cool with it! I like wood beads, more warmth to the hand!🙂

I go to the adoration chapel and could go to an apparition site 3 or 4 hours from my house, but choose not to. As a matter of fact I’ve seen them advertise this place by saying something to the effect of…Why go to Medjugorje, when Mary is also appearing here?.. I could also drive 30 minutes and go to the House of Prayer ( built from the directive of Christina Gallagher, another seer) , but choose not to. I’ll stay by Jesus. These places, visions, apparitions, talking statues, etc. now leave me feeling uneasy.

Why would Jesus have a statue talk when He could just appear? Same with Mary. I know that Akita in Japan has been proven worthy of belief, but that one also had a talking statue. I’m worried about the consequences of what might happen when the Vatican does not approve Medjugorje. Everyone I know who follows that place will never stop believing or listening to the messages.

Anyway, I have a rosary that the silver links turned goldish and copperish color after I started going to a rosary group with people who have been to Medjugorje. The rosary is 45 years old. The inside of the beads ( which was a clear color looks greenish, so that is why I think it is some kind of chemical reaction.

Good point. Though in my experience I’ve rarely (actually never) seen crowded adoration chapels or lines of people out the door trying to get in…

I’ve heard of some miraculous stories concerning rosaries turning into gold when it was prayed. Has anyone else heard of this, or even experienced this themselves? Is there a specific name for this phenomenon?

Thank you,

They don’t turn to gold.

I’ve had 2 in my lifetime that have changed to the bright gold color.

1, I buried with our mother. I still have the other.

I belonged to a Rosary Group when we lived in Colorado years ago. The women were real devout, and we met in someone’s house each week. They showed me some of their Rosaries which had changed. Some were the chains. Some, the Corpus of Christ-and the Cross remained Silver. Still others, the caps and nothing else.

I laid out all my Rosaries so my Protestant husband could see I didn’t have a gold one among them. They were all silver colored. I asked the Blessed Virgin if I too could have one.

We were on an airplane on Good Friday shortly after that. At 3 pm, I pulled out my Rosary to pray the Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet, and my Rosary chains had turned a bright gold color! I showed my husband, reaching over our 2 sleeping children!!!

My 2nd one that changed-when we lived in N.Carolina (after Colorado), I had hauled home the (about) 4 foot tall concrete statue of the Virgin Mary that stood in front of our little Catholic Church. You see, I was going to repaint her. The statue stood in our kitchen for a couple of weeks. The very day I started to work on the statue-my 2nd Rosary changed. Once again, it was the chains, and it was a bright gold color.

It’s not like the nickel plating wore off and it’s the copper underneath, like some slowly do-this is immediate-and a very vibrant, bright gold-color. Pulling a bead, and peeking underneath, the pin remains silver under the bead. It’s like it’s like the chains and eyes of the pins have been spray-painted. Or radiated.

Cool, huh?

Remember, one of the promises for praying the Rosary each day-is Signal Graces.

This is just 1.

I have heard of it and oddly enough this question and others you have raised lately are of intrest to me. I believe that there is something of the devil in the constant thoughts that wouldnt it be great if I saw a miracle or had some amazing mystical experience or another.
I think this is a 2 pronged attack. The first is challenging God to do a miracle as if we deserve it and the second is to make us think we are not worthy of a miracle leading us to think we are not worthy of both. Im certain there are even more traps than those inherent in searching for miracles.

I would caution all to remember " blessed are those who have not seen but yet believe " that not the direct quote but im sure you can look it up if you want the exact wording.

Remember if you do have a mystical experience you need to be very cautious as to the true nature.

I think we should look for Gods little miracles in our everyday life. His gentle hand and direction. The chance meeting, the appropriate reading, the inspiration when we respond to people with the comforting words and deeds etc.

I would suggest praying the rosary and collect the golden rosary when you arrive at the pearly gates lol

By the way please dont take my answer as an attack on your questioning its just a little prompt for you to think about why these questions are important to you.

Oh, Ye have such little Faith.

Pray the Rosary every day, and you also will be changed.

Try it.

God Bless you.

My Mom had a friend that went to Medjugorje many years ago and she took my Mom’s medal necklace with her. When she returned my Mom put the necklace back on and it did turn after a few days and stayed that way until my Mom died. I have the medal necklace now and it has turned back to silver. I know the necklace was silver when my Mom first started to wear it and I saw it turn gold and then back to silver.

I have no idea and I don’t think the Vatican even recognizes Medjugorje as an apparition site. 🤷
Vatican commission reportedly formed to investigate Medjugorje apparitions

You can rest assured, if anything is found to be in conflict with our Faith-Medjugorje will be condemned.

So far-it hasn’t.

God Bless you.

I was at a prayer meeting in the late 1980s or early 1990s where a rosary turned gold by which I mean it turned gold in color. I didn’t do any tests on it so I can’t say for certain that it was actual gold.

I meant to say IF, but probably a Freudian slip! We aren’t allowed to post the messages, so let it suffice to say that if any of the messages are not in accordance with Catholic teaching, they won’t approve it; and I believe the Church states that a soul is formed in the womb at conception, which contradicts one of the messages.

My guess is they might even just say something like there isn’t enough evidence to support supernatural events taking place. This is what they did at Garabundal ( At least that is what I read as to how the Church left it)

None of us here is in any position to know if it will or will not be approved.
The Bishop of Medjugorje has made a clear statement as to why he disapproves of what is happening there. Catholic apologist Patrick Madrid on his website has linked to the Bishop’s statement. Madrid states:

" Bishop Ratko Peric, in 2007, provided an exhaustive chronology and outline of salient facts surrounding the alleged apparitions. For anyone who is serious about wanting to know all the details pertaining to Medjugorje, this “Fact Sheet” is a must read, regardless of where you currently stand on this issue."

Years ago I was tremendously excited about Medjugorje. The talk about Purgatory, reparation, confession, and praying the Rosary sounded like the real thing. After all, this is what the Church teaches—one need only read the Catechism of the Catholic Church! But the more I have investigated and pondered the Medjugorje, the more I believe it is possibly a demonic deception. Yes, even with all the calls to conversion, confession and saying the Rosary. The Church has taught this even before Medjugorje.

The point of all deception is to deceive souls by presenting something that may look and sound good and orthodox on the surface, but in reality the deception has one aim—namely to cause rebellion against Church authority and division within the Church. This has been the case since the birth of the Church— division has caused much disintegration among the faithful—we see it in the Book of Acts, in the writings of the Church Fathers, and especially in the history of the Church since the Protestant Revolt, which ushered in a splintering of Christianity like never before. Simple disobedience among one group has degenerated into other groups as “The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints” (Mormons), or the Jehova’s Witnesses, who deny the divinity of Christ. Centuries after one man Luther, countless Protestant Christian groups deny the validity of Sacraments and authority of the Church, or even view the Holy Father (our pope) as the anti-Christ. This all coming from people who consider themselves faithful Christians.

Such divisions have ushered countless souls down the wrong path of rejecting the true Church itself, depriving souls of valid sacraments. For example, today there are groups who call themselves “true catholics” and oppose all popes since Pius XII. For example, meet “Pius XIII”

I ask a simple question. What if the Church does not approve the apparition at Medjugorje? Then what? Would that shock thousands (millions?) of faithful Medjugorje pilgrims with disillusionment with the Church? Would people rebel against the Church and distrus Church authority? Or what would happen to the faith of Medjugorje converts if even one of the seers came out and confessed that Medjugorje was an out of control hoax? Would the faith of such converts be shaken?

Gabriel let’s just say my view inclines towards your own on the whole…
Of course, I could be completely mistaken. Maybe the Mother of God is visiting these people as the Church enters another stage in history. Who knows.

There’s no doubt that there have been countless conversions and even people becoming priests after visiting Medjugorje, as well as people who say they’ve witnessed actual miracles. But Rosaries turning gold and and cloud formations that may resemble bearded people are easily explained.

The Medjugorge “seers” claim to have tallied more than 9,000 personal visitations form the Mother of God, something which is absolutely unprecedented in Church history.

Yes, I do believe there is a specific name for this. It’s called a claim.
If someone would like to try this under testable conditions then you would really have something.
Until then, call it whatever you wish.
I love Mary and get upset when I see these things connected to her.
Anyway, I thought this was apologetics. So, I hope you understand that the reason I replied was because I really do like knowing more things about Mary.
Wishing you all the best at this time of the death and resurrection of your Messiah.
I do hope no one is upset by my thoughts about this.
