I ditto this.Has anyone here ever actually sent a priest a letter telling them they are doing a great job? Sure, we tell them “Great homily Father” on the way out of mass, but do we complement them on other things. The priests (especially pastors) have a tough job. Their job is not just saying mass. They are running a small business. They did not go to business school. How often do you think the Bishop gets a nice letter?
I will also add a question. Are we abusing the word abuse?
Here’s where I’m coming from. Last Satuday I went to confession. After doing my usual, "Bless me Father for I have sinned. It’s been two weeks since my last confession, " I was about to go into "I accuse myself of . . . (gotcha! Thought I was gong to tell you.
I was caught off guard when the priest interrupted and said “Welcome back,” with the warmest smile in the world.
Now, I’m have been around long enough to know that “Welcome back” is not part of the ritual, but I didn’t make anything of it.
It caught me off guard and I said, “Excuse me?”
The priest repeated it. I started to laugh and thanked him. Then we proceeded.
When I left the confessional I prayed for him, because he had actually made me feel very comfortable. I had never gone to confession with him before. He was just ordained about a year ago and did not get faculties to hear confession until several weeks ago, because he’s a religious brother and the superior has to grant the faculties. So it’s up to the superior when his brothers can hear confessions.
This guy is new to this and is trying to be warm and is probably nervous himself. He’s sitting there with a line outside that’s an hour long, at least. This is typical at our parish.
I was not going to cry ABUSE becasue he stopped me to welcome me back.
This is where I’m coming from when I ask, are we abusing the word abuse?
