Many of Jonathan Edwards’s statements make people cry out “What shall I do to be saved”(Edwards). It is the perfect sermon to tell people to pray more and be “born again” (Edwards). It gives Jonathan Edwards control over the Puritans thoughts and action. He holds the answer tohow to get into Heaven, and the Puritans will do anything to find out that answer. Scaringpeople is always a good way of getting control over them. Religion is used to scare people in Colonial literature. It scared people into keeping their opinions to themselves. Religion isused as an ingenious cover up for control.

His method was rather like that of the Redemptorists 🙂 - he was trying to get across the greatness of his hearers’ danger: whom, after all, he probably knew better than we can. To compare someone of his intellectual & spiritual stature with Jack Chick makes no sense.​

Edwards was like George Whitefield: they were strong Calvinists; God, not man, is the one who acts to call men to salvation: The preacher is no more than a workman.

I wonder what we would think of St Alphonsus Liguori, or Paolo Segneri ? 🙂

First, check for a pulse…thats basically all that is required to see that Jack Chick has no idea what he is talking about.
 
A baptist friend of mine gave me a whole box full of tracts. I’ve read some of them, but not the one you linked too. Some are ok, but most are pretty horrible. They seem full of hate. Also they potray non-religious people as ugly (big noses, small eyes, spots etc) whilst the Christians in the tracs are handsome and pretty. I think that is pretty stupid.
 
In order to find out the religion of the US for the history an archaeologist is writing in the year 4000 long after the US has vanished, he hears of this thing called the Almighty Dollar. As I know already that gods are called almighty, it is evident that the dollar was the god of the Americans. This fully explains “In God we trust” - that must be a profession of faith in the dollar. What about evidence for belief in Jesus ? He can be explained as a manifestation of the Almighty Dollar. As for His being Jewish - that is obviously wrong, because the Book of Mormon says He came to America. Which in turn would explain why there are so many thousands of quotations from the Book of Mormon in the King James Bible: the worshippers of the dollar-god must have evangelised Europe & brought the Europeans the blessings of the Mormon religion of the dollar.

I like how he says that in Egypt, IHS stood for Isis, Horus, and Seb. Wow, I didn’t realize ancient Egyptions used the Latin alphabet!

Back when we lived in town, a neighbor who was VERY much into passing out Chick tracts passed out one that railed against celebrating Halloween.

She passed them out to TRICK OR TREATERS… on HALLOWEEN NIGHT!!!

Maybe it’s just me, but I find this hysterical!

The argument is put in a rather confused way - it appears to be, that​

  • the gods in question were being worshipped
  • in Rome
  • at a time when Christianity had come there
    Which is true for Isis, & Horus. But not for “Seb” (who is actually the earth-god Geb).
So the worshippers of Isis & Horus in Rome, at that period, could well have used the Latin alphabet.

Even so, the argument - that IHS had two meanings, one Christian & one pagan; & that this ambiguity was deliberately exploited by some (unnamed) Pope - still collapses.

The original argument in full is:
  • …there are letters on the wafer that are worth reading. These letters are I. H. S. What mean these mystical letters? To a Christian these letters are represented as signifying, “Iesus Hominum Salvator,” “Jesus the Saviour of men.” But let a Roman worshipper of Isis (for in the age of the emperors there were innumerable worshippers of Isis in Rome) cast his eyes upon them, and how will he read them? He will read them, of course, according to his own well known system of idolatry: “Isis, Horus, Seb,” that is, “The Mother, the Child, and the Father of the gods,”–in other words, “The Egyptian Trinity.” Can the reader imagine that this double sense is accidental?     Sounds convincing - if one does not ask a few questions. Such as: If this happened - how does the author know about it ? He was not an Egypytian, or a Roman or a Catholic, of that time. It is reasonable to assume that he had no access to a fountain of youth & immortality that allowed him to be present at what he describes in such detail. So - he must have sources for his info. But nowhere are any given. Taken separately, the details are most of them accurate - put all together, & the result is fiction: just as it is accurate to talk about Pharaohs or motorbikes, but fantasy to talk of Pharaohs on motorbikes.
The author has confused the logically conceivable, with the historically actual: as though, because it is possible to explain the damage to the White House in 1812 (IIRC) by making up a story of a fire-breathing dragon launched against it by the evil British 🙂 as a weapon in the 1812-14 War, that were what actually occurred.

The book this is from, is more like a novel than anything else - maybe Chick tracts are best regarded as a form of cheap fiction, with Popeman as the comic book villain foiled by SuperProt. 🙂

In my (limited) experience, that night is chosen so that Christians can lessen the paganism of the events of the night as kept by pagans, by doing something Christian as a counter-measure. It’s not hypocritical, or even inconsistent - it’s a good example of “redeeming the time”. 🙂​

 
I meant hypocritical in the sense that, before, she used to just keep her light off and discourage kids from even coming to her house (and they did stay away… we had a neighborhood full of good kids). Now she actually participated! To me, it seemed hypocritical–the kids thought she was giving out candy… why encourage an activity one finds evil?:confused:

After that, the kids just stayed away, even if she did have her light on… just like they stayed away from the house that gave out toothbrushes and dental floss and the one that gave out raisins and whole grain granola bars! 😉

The problem with this argument is that is assumes that (1) the Egyptians worshiped a trinity, and (2) IHS stands for "Isis, Horus, and Seb (possibly meant to be “Set”).
  1. The Egyptians did not worship a trinity of any kind. Isis, Horus, Set, Ra, etc, etc represent a pantheon of pagan gods worshiped by the ancients. They had no ruling trinity, or anything like that.
  2. Isis begat Horus, but Set? Set was the god of evil, trickery, and the desert. The idea that Set would be part of a trinity of ruling gods is absurd.

The author of the book all this stuff originally came from, has a theory about Set too 🙂 : the Egyptian stories are distorted & hostile reports of the activity of the Patriarch Shem in Egypt. Set is based on him, & is the enemy of Osiris because Osiris = Nimrod; & Nimrod was put to death by Shem, just as Osiris was murdered by Set.​

It is a pretty pathetic attempt to discredit the Blessed Sacrament.
 
Most of jack Chick’s info comes from Alexander Hislop, who did some very shabby research about a century ago and wrote The Two Babylons, and Alberto Rivera, who apparently went through seminary in Spain and emerged years later with a strangely undocumented life claiming to have spent his youth infiltrating evangelical churches for the Jesuits. He said the Jesuits tried to kill him for publicly announcing that he was not a brother to Protestants. Chick helped him out. But then Rivera’s wife was located…and the records of his kids…Chick stands by Rivera and Hislop when few others do.
Jack Chick is not a hate-filled person. He is a warm-hearted but untrusting man who finds it easy to believe that the world is tangled in conspiracies and that the most reliable people are those who appear to be on the run from enemies. It probably has something to do with the small-town world he grew up in.

For a non-Jesuit, our Jack is surprisingly well-informed 😃​

The conclusion - which been drawn many times already: Brother Jack is a secret Jesuit, working for the destruction of Protestantism in the US by making it look ridiculous.

He would deny this - of course he would; but that is no argument not to believe such denials. His being in de Nile would explain the frequent anti-Egypt remarks in the comics: they are an obvious cover for his true identity. Besides, Chick publications is full of statements about the untruthfulness of the SJs. That proves he’s one.

Of course Rome created all those groups - it’s obvious; but only real crypto-crypto-Jesuits would know that, & know why: the purpose is to set these groups against each other - then the Black Pope (= Nimrod, the “negro god” of the Two Babylons) can sit, or Set, back, & watch them fight each other to a finish: & take over the universe.

There are people who imagine Vulcans are not real ? Of course they are - that is why the Vatican, or White Tower, is preparing to welcome them. Besides, TTB mentions Vulcan - so they must be real. 🙂 Which is just what all those Black Helicopters are - Vulcan warships, preparing to transport humankind to the star Kolob (just as mentioned in the Book of Mormon or somewhere; everything is all connected)

This is the real purpose of NASA - but it seems our Jack did not know this

I’ve read these publications and while Chick no doubt sincerely believes in Christ and also believes he is doing Christ’s will, I have to agree with Mirdath’s assessment of his tracts.

I checked some of the ‘facts’ in his comics/tracts which include claims such as:
  1. The Vatican created the religion of Islam to destroy bible-believing Christians and also bring Jeruslam under its control
  2. The Vatican is ruled by a ‘Black Pope’, who controls the Pope
  3. The Vatican, using the Jesuits, started World Wars I and II
  4. The CC has led to the deaths of 68 million people since the medieval period
  5. The CC enlisted an army of 4 million Muslims during the Spanish Civil War to destroy the Protestant Churches there
  6. The church uses the Jesuits, Catholic ‘plants’ and ‘spies’ to destroy Protestant ministers and churches around the world, particularly in South America
  7. The Catholic communion wafer has the inscription of pagan deities on it representing the Egyptian deities Horus and Seth
  8. Confession and communion as sacraments come from the Egyptian religion, which was used by Satan to set up the church
  9. The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith maintains a computer database which records all the names of all the world’s Protestants and their pastors, which will be used in the Vatican’s plans for world domination
  10. Catholic bishops and cardinals are associated with Freemasonry and the Illuminati, who the Vatican controls in its attempts to rule the world

If one is really research minded, one does not read the anti-sort of books. One studies from the sources of a religion and forms one’s opinion. That is the right approach.

GodAllahYHWH is All-Knowing and All-Wise; one should invariably give Claim and Reason on all important issues from one’s Revealed Book; one shouldn’t try putting one’s own words into God’s mouth. Kindly let God speak for Claim and Reason and you would know the truth for sure.

Pardon my ignorance, who is Jack Chick? What does he want? Is he or was he a Catholic?
