My wife’s devotion to Mary has been so strong, that after 30 years she has become my own “resident Mary” for educational, transformational, and practical purposes.
If it grieves Mary, it grieves my wife. If it grieves my wife, it grieves me. I don’t even have to understand it and typically I don’t. If it would please Mary, it pleases her, and it flows to me without even being in the same room through her voice or facebook posts.
Maybe that’s partly because a few years ago I realized that while other Catholics were focused on Mary, I’m focused on her as the Most Important Woman in my life, the giver of my children and legacy, the one who yearns to be so Mary-like that she teaches me things that amaze me about love and mercy as applied to an actual immediate situation.
I love Mary as the mother of my God and friend, but she has plenty of men looking out for her, including my brother Knights of Columbus. My personal focus is on the other half of myself, through whose love even my evil nature has hope of being justified, my love coach, my promise, my vocation, my life, my legacy, my patient suffering helper when others said to flee me for your own good, the one who honored her marital promise, and gave me a beautiful set of children including one priest who loves Mary. How’s that for an overachiever? How can I nor be as in awe of that, as what others speak of Mary about for her love of Jesus? She loves our children so much it is incredible, and one is in second year of seminary now – when he was a baby she devoted him to Mary and look what happened? So yeah, Mary works through my wife, to teach me lessons that only a woman devoted to being as perfect as she can become, in real life and in my own life, could have ever hoped to have done by any other way.
