Nope. But I have felt Her presence. Many years ago, I lived near a famous national shrine; a friend and I would sometimes meet there to talk and pray. We both were going through problems in our personal life. She was having great difficulty getting pregnant, after several years of marriage. I had just finished 18 weeks of physical therapy following an accident caused by an uninsured drunk driver. Both my doctors had advised me to apply for disability, I had been scraping by on Food Stamps, and money from my parish and several generous souls who gave me cash to pay my living expenses. As we sat on the bench near the Grotto, we both became aware of an overwhelmingly strong odor of roses. It was very strong, almost intoxicating. Curiously we looked around for the source of the smell, thinking perhaps there was someone bring bouquets of roses in the Grotto. We both knew that there were no rose bushes anywhere in the Grotto, plus it was late Fall and the foliage was mostly brown. There was no logical reason for the overwhelming scent. We both surmised that it could only be a sign from Heaven, and perhaps Our Lady was reassuring us somehow that we would be taken care of by God. Several months later, as Winter closed and Spring approached, she got pregnant. Then I was approved for Social Security Disability Payments. I had been told to expect denial, as most applicants are turned-down and forced to go through a grueling appeal procedure. Having suffered several miscarriages previously; my friend later gave birth to a healthy baby girl, whom she named Mary Elizabeth.

As a side note; the day of the accident, I was on my way to the Basilica in town, to pray the Novena with the Sisters for upcoming Feast of Our Lady of the Snows. As I sat in my wrecked car waiting for the emergency folk to come, I looked up at the rosary hanging from my rear view mirror (which mysteriously lost it’s crucifix), and exclaimed out loud, “I guess I’m not getting to the Novena today, Mary”. My parents cleaned out my now-totaled car, they never found the crucifix to my rosary. I had gone airborne after the drunk struck my car, I flew over a service island and rammed into a van. That van didn’t belong there, the mechanic had just pulled it out of the garage. But had it not been there, I would have flown through a plate glass window, and ended up in the lobby of the auto repair business. I could have been far more seriously injured than I was.

I do have another story of Our Lady leaving a message. My father, a fallen-away Catholic, passed away several years ago. When he first became ill and was hospitalized, one of the Vincentian priest pinned a Green Scapular to his pillow. I know my mother was especially worried about his salvation, as he had not awakened following emergency surgery. He did awaken many days later, and that same Vincentian asked if he wished to receive the sacraments. He was on a ventilator, so he could not speak, but he could indicate “yes” or “no”, so the priest simply asked if he was sorry for any and all sins he committed, then he was given Extreme Unction. This was 2 years to the day of my auto accident, August 3rd. He died 2 days later, on the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows on August 5th. There is a promise attached to the Green Scapular that Our Lady will obtain the conversion of those who have fallen away from the True Faith. I’m convinced she did so with my father, the day of his death was clearly Providential.

Yeh I disagree. A lot. St Juan Diego, St Gemma, St Faustina? I mean, there are many more I’m sure, but that’s just off the top of my head.
You may disagree, but that is pretty much what Mystical Theology teaches. Father Benedict Groeschel caused quite a controversy when he gave a talk in my former town, and stated this. People actually got up and walked out in the midst of his talk. St Gemma and St Faustina were young adults, they fit the criteria as taught by Francisco De Osuna, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross and Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange. Jaun Diego was a convert, his spiritual level and understanding was probably not advanced to the point of being capable of higher mystical experience, he wasn’t educated either, He is probably the rare exception to the criteria. As Father Groeschel and all of the above have stated (note that some are Doctors of the Church), physical apparitions seen with the human eyes are the lowest form of mystical experience and typically occur to children and young adults under 30 yo or so. Interior visions seen with the eyes of the soul are an advanced form of mystical experience that occur to adults with a mature prayer life. I understood St Gemma to be a Mystic, not a visionary, and that her visions were interior, like Teresa of Avila.

Have you actually read or studied Mystical Theology. I have. I read all of the above authors, and when studying Garrigiu-Lagrange; I was under the spiritual direction and guidance of a Capuchin theology professor at one of the US’s most orthodox seminaries, and this nations oldest. He teaches (and has for several decades) Mystical Theology at this seminary, Garrigou-Lagrange is the textbook used. My Spiritual Director was surprised that not only was I reading this, but after thoroughly quizzing me; that I understood the contents and could accurately answer his questions. Gift of God, or the fact I have Aspergers syndrome and have an uncanny ability to retain information on subjects that pique my interest? Or both? I don’t know. But this priest told me I had a better grasp of the subject at hand than many of his students. For the basics of Mystical Theology, I cannot recommend enough Father Groeschels, “A Still Small Voice”. You are free to disagree on this subject, as the Church has not made any definite teachings, but do know that you disagree with theologians and Doctors of the Church who know a great deal of knowledge on this subject.

I smelled the sent of roses once at a church, with no obvious signs of roses around.

Could the scent of roses be an answered Prayer from St. Therese?

I have also smelled roses as well (without roses being present)

I have also smelled incense various times (without incense being present)

When I watched the Christmas Mass (Dec.25th,2009, Fri.) on T.V. with Pope Benedict XVI, he was carrying a thurible blessing with incense <—I smelled incense.

There is a thread about St. Catherine Laboure, Praying to see the Blessed Virgin Mary

St Gemma was indeed a mystic, but she had all sorts of real life encounters, like a crucifix becoming real and seeing her guardian angel as he went to and from heaven, and lots demons in addition to real apparitions. But no I haven’t directly studied Mystical Theology out of a book. Well actually, maybe I have read a chapter or two 🤷 I just remember also reading on other occasions others who’ve seen the Blessed Virgin. The one instance I know, I can’t remember the saint or I would have listed the example before, but for some reason she didn’t believe said visionary saint and after a change of heart down the road asked saint for a favor to see the Virgin and she appeared to her and the nun died. That’s why I didn’t list that example before bc I can’t site it and it may not be true, who knows. I think if Mary wanted to appear to anyone she’d do it despite how contemplative their prayer life had become. But like I said, I’ve not studied it, am not an expert, nor do I claim to be. Just giving my impression!

It is really interesting though isn’t it?
:yup:

btw, I think its funny, when I read this, I was watching Fr Groeschel on EWTN 👍

I have never received any type of apparition. However, I have often felt spiritual comfort from prayer.

Hey out of curiosity, has Mary ever appeared to you? count dreams or really anything that has struck you as miraculous. :bounce:
Yes. Our Lady came to me in a dream once, when I needed a good, swift kick in the pants. We never really have ways of proving whether or not it was “just a dream” or actually a message, but her message was clear! I was not living a good Catholic life and she told me so in no uncertain terms! I awoke with tears in my eyes from sadness at offending our Lord, and a distinct fear of hell.

I think it was a true message, because that was just the beginning of my journey back. And I attribute my love of Our Lord to Mary, my mother. She is the one who showed me how to love her Son. She’s certainly a good mother!

To answer the OP, no. But there was once when I smelled the scent of roses when I was praying the Rosary, and there were no roses around. It wasn’t a STRONG rose smell…it’s hard to describe but it was a “feeling” more like I could FEEL that there was some nurturing and loving presence there and I didn’t want to open my eyes to ruin it so I kept them closed. And since most of my strongest emotions are tied to smell, I remember the scent of roses was there as well. This only happened the one time, and I don’t know what it was or if it was anything. It was nice, though.

Just found this thread but I believe Mary appeared to me in a dream about a week ago. I have been fighting against sexual immorality recently and have been doing great with my struggles, through bible time and rosary and prayer.

Anyways, in my dream with me was a woman who has been my friend for a few years now and that I have had attractions to, the dream soon turned sexual. The amazing part was I had been praying for “clean” dreams, I didn’t want to have any sexual dreams and when my dream was becoming sexual out of nowhere a white light appeared and all I could see was the blessed Virgin Mary walking…just walking. It was really peaceful and at the end the Virgin Mary and I believe Jesus HIMSELF were standing over a baby carriage playing with and comforting a small baby, it was really cool! All my sexual thoughts in the dream just disappeared!

You very likely were the baby they were comforting. What a wonderful dream!

I haven’t seen the Blessed Virgin but I believe she has spoken to me on at least three occasions. The first was in Lourdes, the second in my home and the third at the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham.

In Lourdes I believe I was granted a locution explaining to me about my relationship with my mother figure. She had left me and I was in great pain and turned to Mary, asking - woman to woman - why this relationship had been allowed to happen to me when it was so confusing and had ended in separation. The Blessed Virgin showed me that She had seen my need for a mother and this woman’s need for a daughter and had petitioned God to grant me a human representation of the Divine Mother’s love for me; this had been done through a moment of religious experience during some Nativity plays that myself and my beloved mother figure had acted in. (I was Peace and she played Justice. Just as in the psalm, Justice and Peace kissed one another.) All this was realised within an instant near the grotto of Lourdes.

The second time I was asking Our Lady how to deal with my feelings for my mother figure and repair my relationship with my own mother and I heard Her say, “open your heart”. It came as if from outside my head: a gentle, loving voice. In Walsingham I asked Her how to look after my mother figure and She simply said, “love her”.

It’s so nice to read this thread and see that I am not alone in encountering the Blessed Virgin 🙂

Once. There wasn’t anything to see physically, but there was no doubt as to what happened.

When it happens, it seems to be a vastly personal thing, and you keep it close and turn it over in your heart. It was probably five or six years before I ever shared it with even a close family member, and even then, it was for their benefit, not mine. It makes me happy when I find that these sorts of things are far more common than casual conversation would indicate. 🙂

Well, I prayed the rosary two days ago on the way home (singing the prayers), and when I arrived at home, I recieved not only a packet from America Needs Fatima containing a picture of Our Lady of Fatima and a blessed candle, but a statue that my grandmother had wanted to give me of the Blessed Virgin when I was a child.

I think I had a bit of a vision or dream of her when I was a kid. Not being Catholic at the time (that was years away), it didn’t make much sense. She did say something, but it was such a long time ago I can’t remember much about it.

I do remember one strange incident when one my aunts died. I only found out later she was a very staunch Catholic. Anyway we went to her home where her husband and kids were there. Unknown to me she was lying in state on the bed as the ambulance hadn’t come (she’d simply dropped dead from a heart attack, as she’d had glandular fever when she was younger). She was only about 30 and the kids were very young.

Anyway I wandered into the bedroom, saw her there and went out to my parents, “Aunt Mary’s in there!” I was hushed up, and I think they were embarassed when they realised I’d been in the room.

Anyway the time came to go home, and this is where it got strange. I was about to get into the car, when “Aunt Mary” wandered out on the small front landing. She looked daggers at my father, who looked at me. His face was utterly demonic. Her face was accusing at him. Then she looked at me, and her face was, well, judgemental. It was a rather frightening experience for a six year old kid. Then she seemed to go inside, not normally the action of a dead person. My father then snarled at me, “Get in the car!” So I did.

I didn’t know who to talk to. I couldn’t’ talk to my father as that would have been a complete waste of time, and my mother hadn’t seen it, so I was left high and dry with this peculiar experience, which would no doubt have been written off as a kid’s imagination. I had no knowledge at that time of her every strong Catholicism, and it was years before I found out.

But I wonder about the connection between the fact she was a staunch Catholic, her name was Mary, and the later brief dream or vision. Add to the that the business of my father appearing in my room the night he died (about 20 years later), along with his final departing scream, and a few other experiences along the line, and well, it gets a bit bewildering at times. I wonder what’s it all pointing at.

But as for anything like Fatima, nothing like it. Not even a scent of roses as far as I can remember.

I have never seen our Blessed Virgin Mother. But I know she is very much in my life! Many reasons to many to mention. My Mother was very badly ill and was in a drug induced coma for three motnhs on a ventilator, While under this drug induced coma she was in a park wiuth colors you can’t imagine here on earth, A lady sat on the bench with her and just read a book wearing sandals no words were exchanged just this beautiful lady reading a book a white book. Mom decided in this time to live and she made a full recovery. I have heard my name called out of thin air a beautiful woman’s voice. There is a supposed apparition in Salt Lake City. The city were cutting limbs off trees to avoid hitting the power lines. There is this one tree where there are two holes in the exact same shape of Mary, and there was sap running out of the tree in mid winter. I touched the sap and the hole and had an experience and I was at that moment sorry for all the things I had done prior to that point. There was a shrine and candles lit around the tree and wonder if there still is. Scoob

Once. When I was wide awake, in a church, praying ar Her statue. I had just had a personal statue of her blessed a few minutes ago. The Priest left (it was a weekday, late in the afternoon), and I was the only one in the church. I was not at all frightened at the time, but later that evening, when it hit me, it took my breath away. I have had other experiences with Her as well, but have only seen Her ‘live’ once.

In the book, The Mystical City of God, Sister Mary describes our Blessed Mother’s appearance. That description agreed completely with what I saw. For this and other reasons, I am absolutely certain that this book is valid.

I have never desired to have any mystical experiences, but they happen now and then. And they are not all pleasant. Even so, I’m grateful. Our Lord does work in mysterious ways.

Full steam ahead.

A few months ago, I was extremely angry at God and said to Him I’m returning back to my ways of atheism. Anyway, I noticed I started to get unpleasant dreams when I declared myself an atheist. About 2-3 days in, I had a dream where I saw the Blessed Virgin Mary protecting our household. I never saw her face-to-face, but saw her side. She was wearing a cloak and standing at the door of our household.

Personally, I don’t take the dream too seriously. I think it was just meant to show the nature of the Blessed Virgin Mary interceding on our behalf. Of course, there’s also always the possibility of the subconscious mind playing tricks on us. The brain is a complex organ and can conjure up it’s own sense of reality as well.

It’s important that we take these kind of experiences into context. Very rarely does the Blessed Virgin Mary appear or speak to someone. I believe it’s necessary to say that because people who might read this thread may end up thinking it’s a normal occurrence; it isn’t. Another thing to note is that having the dream (on the assumption it’s real) doesn’t make me special or distinguished. I don’t know conclusively why I had the dream or to what purpose, but I’ve mentioned my own speculation as laid out in my second paragraph. Hope that helps 👍
