Since the communicant was from France, I don’t see why she would have thought Communion in the hand was okay. I don’t think that either France or Italy have an indult (which is what we have in the US) to receive Communion in the hand. so in this situation it is not the preference of a particular priest, the pope, but the universally established norm of receiving on the tongue.Its not even news. Its one thing to expect the laity to know the rules (which is sometimes tough enough when they are changing regularly) but to expect everyone to remember the preference of a particular priest (in this case the pope) as well is a bit much.
Anyone could have made the mistake in question
