WASHINGTON – The most likely victim of a hate crime in the U.S. is a poor, young, white, single urban dweller, according to an analysis of Justice Department statistics collected from between July 2000 and December 2003.

A November report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics detailing a study of 210,000 “hate crimes” a year during that period has gone virtually unreported by the U.S. press.

Thanks for the info…It was very interesting to see a report acknowledge that hate goes both ways and that anyone can be a victim of a hate crime.

One of the things that this “news” story shows is that the numbers are based on the subjective perception of the victims who report the crimes not on an actual investigation. The rest of the story appears to be trying to make news out of nothing much.

It is logical that since whites make up well over 60 percent of the total US population that they would make up the largest number of victims of any type of crime, not just “hate” crimes. Is this news to anyone who can do basic math? Also who would they report as the perpetrator if they attributed the motive to race? Unless they live in a part of the country with a higher Hispanic or Asian population then the only other race in their “poor” neighborhood would likely be Black. Go figure.

“Hate” crimes are overreported in my opinion because of that very subjectiveness. A homosexual can report a hate crime if someone yells at him for cutting them off in traffic even if the other person is unaware of his sexual orientation. The police will have to take the report and code it for the crime stats even if there is insufficient evidence to prosecute. Someone can assume that vandalism is a hate crime if it is directed against whatever group happens to be the minority in the area even absent clear objec!ive evidence of “hate.”

Since I used to work in law enforcement for many years (for a campus, a city and a state), I would caution anyone to take the crime stats with a grain of salt regardless of the spin put on them. My alma mater used to fight with the campus police every year over crime reporting because we did an honest job which put us near the top of public universities for violent crime. It wasn’t that our school was more dangerous than others in our conference, but when you talked with other police agencies they had little “tricks” for undercounting certain types of crimes. Sex crimes magically get moved into simple assault categories, etc. It is obviously not the practice everywhere, but something that many people don’t consider when checking the stats before buying a home or choosing a school with their children.

Young, poor white people commit hate crimes too…so do old, rich, black people…what is their point? The media simply enjoys villifying the upper class.
